NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 1)

Yeah, this “read books” thing, she should not be speaking of things beyond her .17caliber comprehension.

It looks like you can own full auto in KY. I read an M60 goes for $200K! (when you can find one for sale) I’ll take the Ferrari, it’s more useful

Ever try to suppress a fair election with a Ferrari?

I eagerly await her criminal justice reform bill.

Imagine being 47 years old and discovering that our justice system is unnecessarily cruel.

They have no problem with a two-tiered “justice” system — or cruelty — as long as the bottom tier and cruelty are reserved for the right people (aka “Them”).

Well, duh. The January 6 insurrectionists are in there, and that’s how they roll.

I would point out that Oxford MI, location of the recent school shooting is a fairly conservative community and those Congresscritters posting gun pics are doing so when some folks who might be, broadly speaking, their folks have lost family members. Perhaps they might be rethinking their affiliation, though.

But, unlike Grapenuts, GunNuts contain both guns and nuts.

Seriously, tribal coherence is a powerful force. Part of the process is re-enforcing coherence, through these types of fetish displays. The point is to keep whomever from having thoughts that stray from the fold.

David Brooks is whining again… let me get out my teeny violin. :violin:

What passes for “conservatism” now, however, is nearly the opposite of the Burkean conservatism I encountered then. Today, what passes for the worldview of “the right” is a set of resentful animosities, a partisan attachment to Donald Trump or Tucker Carlson, a sort of mental brutalism. The rich philosophical perspective that dazzled me then has been reduced to Fox News and voter suppression.

I recently went back and reread the yellowing conservatism books that I have lugged around with me over the decades. I wondered whether I’d be embarrassed or ashamed of them, knowing what conservatism has devolved into. I have to tell you that I wasn’t embarrassed; I was enthralled all over again, and I came away thinking that conservatism is truer and more profound than ever—and that to be a conservative today, you have to oppose much of what the Republican Party has come to stand for.

This essay is a reclamation project. It is an attempt to remember how modern conservatism started, what core wisdom it contains, and why that wisdom is still needed today.

My bold.

He got that part right, although I would amend that to read “to be a decent human being today you have to oppose…,” etc., etc…

I read most of the very long article and I think David has mistaken what he is calling “conservatism” for… well… liberalism, at least liberalism as I recall it being defined in my college political science classes.

Please imagine I was able to find the image of Jack Sparrow reacting to Will Turner accusing him of cheating, and made a meme of it:

Republican!

Wow, you must be a lot younger than me. I remember being uncomfortable with James Earl Carter because he was too conservative. And really, when you look at many of his policies, he was pretty darn conservative. The whole savings and loan crisis of the late '80s was largely due to a policy Carter established in the late '70s.

In truth, you can be a decent, caring person and still be so short-sighted that the things you think will make life better will do the opposite. An actual conservative will be willing to adapt to make improvements when they see that the old way is causing problems. Modern RWers are not like that. They see that it is not working so they just say that we are not doing it hard enough.

Tucker Carlson says that covid “feminizes” people by “taking away the life force”.

I hope he takes some airtime to explain why and how bad it is for people to become more like women and why women are, inherently and objectively, bad.

Life force? Heck, we can give birth. Does he really believe this or is it a ploy for ratings?

I’d guess Carlson genuinely believes male-supremacist things (such as that females are anti-life-force or whatever the hell theory he’s selling). Pro-authoritarianism implies pro-hierarchy, and the most basic of pro-hierarchy beliefs includes the “fact” that one gender is inherently inferior to the other.

And sadly, women who watch his show will just accept that they are inferior and that it’s God’s plan and whatnot—so this new initiative won’t hurt Tucker’s ratings at all.

So, if I’m following Tucker’s logic correctly, he is saying that getting COVID is a bad thing, yah? 'Cause it makes one more girly. So, one should try to not get COVID, yah?

Let’s see, how are some ways to not get COVID…

By getting covid, of course!

Why do anti-vaxxers keep getting COVID? It’s A Conspriacy!!

…I’m sure that they have the power to target somebody to get COVID. All the very prominent Republicans and people who have been outspoken against vaccines—pastors, etc.—suddenly they come down with a bad case of COVID and it makes the news: ‘Anti-vaxxer, anti-masker pastor comes down with COVID.’ It’s all too suspicious, and I absolutely think people are being targeted…
