I’d call it a bad that a “longtime critic of…the House Freedom Caucus” who “angrily vowed during a private conference meeting that any members who opposed the Californian’s bid for speaker would lose their committee assignments”, is stepping down.
I’m guessing he’s not going to replaced with someone less conservative.

WAG, either it was part of the deal for him to step down, allowing Matt Gaetz to be on something (armed forces committee?) in return for a McCarthy vote or someone, possibly Trump in that 11th hour phone call did, in fact, have some dirt on him.
Reading the linked article about Rogers it says he is stepping down from the steering committee that gives out committee assignments in part because he is taking over as Chairman of the Armed Services committee and that job will be very time consuming. And equally powerful in many ways. He isn’t quitting as a member of the House.
And it is doubtful Trump or Gaetz have anything to do with his decision. At least according to reporting.
