It depends on the length of the hole. This par 3 hole was 181 yards, so you would generally use an iron or a high lofted wood to tee off. 181 is pretty far for a 5 iron, particularly into a ‘strong wind’. Or was it a ‘slight wind’? Hard to tell since he changed the description in consecutive sentences.
To sum up, using a 5 iron was the least improbable thing in that announcement.
The “man” has been golfing for a long time. So it’s possible that he really made the shot? That he actually for once told the truth? Stopped clock and all that.
About as possible that all these big strong men have been walking up to him with tears in their eyes and saying “Sir, thank you for saving our country.”
Especially since the Secret Service wouldn’t allow anyone to “just walk up” to him.

Now, if he got the hole-in-one at the end for the free game-then I’d be impressed.
Honestly, teeing off with a 5 iron for a hole-in-one on a 181 yard par 3 is within the realm of reality. I still think he’s lying, but it’s not cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs fantasy stuff like usual.
Improbable things happen, so it’s not impossible.
But, as the sports saying goes, “Act like you’ve been there before.”
If he did get a hole in one, then he is acting like it’s his first.
I bet he didn’t even buy the traditional round of drinks.
I will also say that this story would be COMPLETELY different if it was Ernie Els tweeting that he watched a President hit a hole in one. As it stands it reads like a pathetic attempt to pump up his fragile ego. Even if he did exactly what he said he did, it’s still pathetic.
