I doubt there was any expectation that they’d affect the actual nomination (though the head shill might have dreamed of that). I think it was just an attempt by Trump to create a photo op of himself being cheered by “Libertarians” at their own convention, something he could use to try to grab some Libertarian voters in the general. The job of the shills was just to get into the front row, look adoring, and cheer for his odious arglebargle.
The last person other than an R or D to actually win electoral votes by ballot was in 1968. Fifty-six years ago. Huan Ross Perot got a lot of popular votes in '92 and '96, but not enough in any state to earn him a slate of electors.
That is how seriously the parties have the system locked down.
John Hospers (L) won an electoral vote in 1972 but it was due to faithless EC voter Roger MacBride, angry that Nixon had implemented wage and price controls shortly before the general election. Tonie Nathan, Hospers’ running make, thus became the first woman to receive an Electoral College vote, a fact we had to keep reminding the media about when Geraldine Ferraro ran for VP with Mondale.

If we’re getting into faithless electors, Faith Spotted Eagle got one from a WA elector in 2016, making her the first Native American to get one, and the impetus for the Supreme Court case that ruled that states can penalize faithless electors.

Well, despite asking to be nominated, Trump didn’t submit the proper paperwork – a petition signed by at least 30 delegates – so was not among the ten candidates on the first ballot, despite one delegate who attempted to nominate him. Kennedy did and received 19 votes, not even 30, and was eliminated on the first ballot. Trump received 5 write-in votes.
Chase Oliver was selected on the seventh ballot. FWIW, it was his candidacy for Georgia Senate in 2022 that helped force the runoff between Warnock and Walker.
