NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 4)

I speculate that he is trying to throw out all medical advancements from the 19th century forward. “I know better than 200 years of scientists and doctors, screw all of you.” Arrogance and evil

I think the cosmetic companies are doing the testing themselves, which costs money, and I’m guessing if there’s a positive test, it’s expensive to discard (or clean?) the raw materials. Not having to do that anymore will probably free up some money in their budget.

Also, it’s RFK Jr, I doubt he’s thinking much to begin with.

A few days ago my daughter had to do a report for a medical class. The teacher some number of cites and, while I don’t think the info she needed was an issue, I did mention to her that maybe she avoid the HHS dot gov site.

Some of what this administration is doing doesn’t seem to me that it’s coming from a place of “I know better” but rather “lets dismantle as much as we can”. Just look at DOGE. If they wanted to save money, there’s ways to do it, but that certainly wasn’t it.

Remember that some of the supposed savings that DOGE found was by laying off or firing FDA staffers who were responsible for evaluating medical devices. Except the salaries of those staffers was covered by industry fees. So they weren’t costing the government anything to begin with.

Asbestos is one of those things, like lead and CFCs, that can do so many amazing things, so long as you ignore their one big huge glaring flaw.

It is an absolutely amazing material with all sorts of uses. Too bad it is so deadly. I think it was also missused in a lot of applications where it really was not necessary.

The Canadian government, and probably other powers with significant asbestos industries, actively sponsored resrarch into applications and promoted it for those uses, going so far as to market it in the developping world long after it was largely banned in Canada. Until recently the Canadian government’s stance was that chrysotile ( the most common Asbestos mineral used and the one mined in Canada) wasn’t proven to be dangerous. Absolutely heinous.

See also the US patent office. I’ve been following a reddit for US patent examiners for the last few months, and the stories they tell are so ridiculous.

This is for an office that not only makes its own money via fees, it’s providing a service that people in industry actually want done. And yet, Trump’s flunkies are still doing everything in their power to screw with the employees.

Random lay-offs, elimination of training, denying them hours needed to do certain jobs but still expecting the work to be done, cancelling their union, demanding that as many as possible return to in-office work, and if you work at home, making you clearly a second-class employee by denying you benefits the in-office people receive. All coupled with a new leadership cadre that gaslights them every chance they get with BS about how much they care about morale and improving the quality of the patent office.

and the top comment “I’ve always said people aren’t sweaty enough on cross-country flights”

Yes, if only the people I’m crammed into a tiny space with could be sweatier----I’m sure that would enhance the experience…

These Trumpites are always coming up with “brilliant” ideas based on the fact that they face NONE of the issues that ordinary Americans do. They would never be flying coach, of course, so being cheek-by-jowl with your seatmates is not something that would enter into their minds as a possible issue.

He wants them to wear full on business suits as well, you know, to really get that funk flowing in business class.

“Get that funk flowing” seems like a good thing for Democrats to campaign against.

Or eaten.

Long, long ago in Silicon Valley, maybe other places as well, “Investment Clubs” became all the rage. People would pay a fee to join the club which allegedly would be invested as part of a pool and the profits distributed among the members.

In reality it was a Ponzi scheme writ small and the PTB started going after them, prosecuting the organizers. People complained vociferously, saying the big bads were blocking the only way ‘the little guy’ could build wealth. Then the clubs began collapsing leading to big bucks for the top level but leaving everyone else holding the bag. The the tune changed to, “Why didn’t you warn us?”

You were, dummies. You just ignored the warnings and believed what you wanted to believe.

In response to a newspaper article about a people gathering signatures at California City Hall for a referendum to block a congressional gerrymander in the Missouri legislature, Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO) tweeted that Californians have no say over what happens in Missouri.

The event took place in the town of California, MO.

As kindly old Prof Tolkien put it:

‘All the ruffians do what he says; and what he says is mostly: hack, burn, and ruin; and now it’s come to killing. There’s no longer even any bad sense in it. They cut down trees and let them lie, they burn houses and build no more.’

Yes, but they were costing those companies something. The companies are happy to bribe the trumpies to destroy the FDA. Then the pharmaceutical industry can be just as shady as the supplement industry.

A few people in the right place will make insane profits trading on the knowledge of which companies are going to benefit when from these changes. And which bogus drugs are going to be waved through as “approved” on the basis of a bribe.

The rest of Americans get screwed, but that’s not important.

Yep and yep.

They’ll often make some argument like

  1. “Talc is a natural ingredient that has been used for decades/centuries. Clearly it’s harmless, so we don’t need to overburden industry with unnecessary regulations.”

Nevermind that actual harm has been found from asbestos in talc.

Or

  1. “Nobody is using talc with asbestos in it. Now that we know the concern, nobody would do that. Thus we don’t need costly government oversight.”

Nevermind the reason there’s no asbestos in the talc being used is because there is oversight.

Or

  1. “If consumers want asbestos-free talc in their cosmetics, they can choose to only buy cosmetics that are labeled asbestos-free. Market forces will drive companies to remove the asbestos. We don’t need expensive government testing and oversight.”

So what’s to keep companies from labeling their merch “asbestos-free” but not actually do any verifying that it’s true?

Because nothing quite like having a sweaty stinky person in the next seat relieves air travel stress!

Quick, people, invest everything you’ve got into leech farms.

But the medical device industry wants the FDA to approve or disapprove their devices so they can make money by selling the devices. It doesn’t help them for the agency to be understaffed and behind on reviewing devices.

They’ll just rubber stamp everything that someone paid trump to approve. No research necessary.
