I know there are systems for using particle beams to enhance fission rates in sub-critical masses of Uranium or thorium. The trick then is putting a sufficiently strong beam source in the bullet*. Put the BB in the tip, the accelerator in the rear, align the beam with the direction of travel of the bullet, and have an impact fuse that triggers the beam, causing the fission reaction. Kaboom, no more squirrel, squirrel’s friends, the tree they’re sitting in, and mid-sized portion of the public park.
*Surely a trivial matter of engineering.

So the gun launches the fissionable BB, tracks its flight with e.g. LiDAR, also tracks the target and when the BB & target get in close proximity, fires the particle accelerator at the BB to trigger the fission.
