New York Dopefest

I’m’ fairly new… but I’m very cute!

Am I welcome?

well, bugger all this for a lark. I’m getting my cast off that day… raise a glass for me, eh?

Do you always wash your hair before entertaining guests? ;o)

I’d love to come along and hang out with y’all, but I’m afraid I have other things I need to attend to. =o/

As anyone called Mendy’s and alerted them to the possiblility of 12 to 18 Dopers descending on them the day after the 4th?

Someone should, you know.

Add me to the count, please.

I won’t be able to make it after all…

I’ll make the call, if no one posts by 5:00 PM saying they already did it. Don’t want to duplicate efforts, of course.

We (collectively) are saddened by the unavailibility of Ike, andygirl, and Pucette, but delighted by the additions of vix and friedo. NotWithoutRage, newbies are always welcome. We wouldn’t want you to be NotWithoutDinner. Ha. Ok, so it’s Monday morning, cut me some slack.

This brings our list to:

Attending:
Manhattan, Magdalene, Capn’Crude, Sua, OxyMoron, cmkeller, zev, Geobabe, Biggirl, Lux Fiat, GilaB, choosybeggar, vix, friedo, and NotWithoutRage.
(total: 16 people)

Maybe:
Grok, lurkernomore, TruePisces, Maeglin

Add one more to your list - I’m planning on unveiling The Boy. He’ll be joining us after he gets off work at 7.

And I may be bringing Littleboy and Littlegirl and/or Houseman. Beerchick may show up (she’s registered, I don’t know why she can’t post these things herself!).

My son hates it when I call him “little boy”.

Um, I can’t find a time anywhere… When are we meeting? Should I carry a rose?

I believe someone mentioned 6:30. I’ll be there just as soon as the LIRR can get me there.

Good point. I didn’t call them yet, so let’s settle that issue. 6:30 PM? Any objections?

Chaim Mattis Keller

I used to work in a medical supply place run by Orthodox Jews. Whenever there was a wedding or a birth we used to get fed but good. There was this one dish and I wish to know the name of it before I get to the restaurant, so help me here.

It was sausage-like although you didn’t eat the casing. Inside it was red (tomatoes sauce, I think). I believe it the innards were vegitable and beef. When I asked what it was made of my boss would always say, “You don’t wanna know. Just eat it and enjoy.” It tasted like pasteles, if that helps.

Alls I know is, it was yummy. BTW, I know only the rudiments of kosher law. I’m not gonna get kicked out if I make a faux pas, will I?

I’ll probably be there around 7. 6:30’s a bit early for a Jersey girl to get into the city.

Nah, don’t worry about it. Just don’t ask for ham, lobster or a cheeseburger and you’ll be OK. Anything else, the waiters will politely inform you that what you’re looking for is unavailable.

Zev Steinhardt

Stuffed derma? But that’s not veggies and tomatoes and beef…stuffed cabbage or peppers?

Okay, I made the reservations under the “Keller” name for 6:30 Thursday evening July 5. That’s Mendy’s, 61 East 34 Street in Manhattan.

Biggirl:

I don’t know what pasteles taste like, but it sounds to me like you’re describing kishka, or stuffed derma. The insides of the kishka I’m familiar with are not red but orange, from the carrots and (sometimes) the beef fat in the mixture.

Looks like DrMatrix and I’ll be able to make it.

Kishka is what I thought of also. It’s usually not cooked on its own (I don’t think so, anyway - I don’t like the stuff myself). Mostly it gets stuck in chulent (Ashkenazi Jewish delicacy - potatoes, beans, barley, short ribs, and a whole assortment of weird ingredients (everybody has their own recipe - mine involves coffee) cooked in a crockpot for about 24 hours) and is then served either in the chulent or on its own. I don’t know if you can get that there, though.

6:30 sounds great.
