Newbie

Like, close your eyes, think of a happy place, and pretend there’s no goat or squid.

It’ll be over soon.

And often the demand is a curt “Cite?”. For most of us that’s a feature, not a bug.

  1. It probably seems rude and arbitrary if you’re breaking rules as a very new poster.
  2. If you are going to make extraordinary claims, it’s up to you to provide the cite for where you got them. If you pulled them out of your ass, present it as an opinion, not a fact. This isn’t The Rest Of The Internet.
  3. Well, yeah. The rule, though, is attack the post, not the poster, as in, “Your post is poorly-thought out,” not, “My God you’re stupid!”
  4. Well, yeah.
  5. Well, yeah.
  6. You betcha!
  7. Explained already.

I will also add, people here don’t really like it when posters start threads and just abandon them. If you’re reading all the responses, give us a little feedback to let us know you’re still there, and we’re not just shouting into a vacuum.

Yup.

Well, I have read Grotonian’s Drunken Disorderly thread now - can we keep him? This one’s feisty!

As you may have noticed, Dopers like pedantry and nitpicking - in fact, it should be the subtitle for this whole message board.

I was just stating my observation of the “cite” protocol. I will add, however, that not all arguments are well-suited to documentation.

For example, let’s imagine I said, “Have fun here, Carmella, just don’t try to eat your cake and have it, too.” (God only knows why I would say that, but let’s imagine I did.)

Someone would inevitably correct me: The expression is, “Have your cake and eat it, too.”

I would respond, but my way makes sense, the other is wrong because you can “have” your cake (today) and “eat” it, too (tomorrow). But you can’t eat it, and then still have it.

And then Yoda’s vision would get cloudy: Begun, The Cite Wars have.

Except, there would be way more citations for the nonsensical adage because more people say it that way.

And Cassandra and I are left here, with our properly-worded adage, condemned to speak the truth and be ignored.

I fear Carmella has moved on to other pursuits. Too bad, as I like the name ‘Carmella’. It rolls off the tongue. C’mon, say it with me: Car-mellll-ahhhhhh. It’s a name that just screams for a sprinkling of sea salt.

Ok, that was funny. Now, who the fuck is Cassandra again?

Greek mythology. Apollo gave her the gift of prophecy with the curse that she would never be believed.

Well, this OP’s gone, but damn! Welcome Grotonian! May the road rise up to meet you.

Wow thanks guys for welcoming me  Boy, we have a happy crowd here

I wish I was but nope

I’m still here! I’m still here! I just got home from a week training slash seminar been very busy lately, but yeah, still here!

Hey, thanks, thanks!

Thank you so much! Hope you’re all having a nice day

“Slash” training ?? Is that with a sharp knife or a guitar ?

Lol I wish I could slash work with a samurai but I need my job

I see you haven’t been reading the gun threads in the BBQ Pit, have you?:cool::wink:

Welcome. As an ‘oldie newbie’ (I signed up in 2006 but didn’t start posting on a regular basis until a month or so ago), I think you’ll find this place pretty good. Great Debates and the Pit are pretty much where the hard-core debaters/flamers (is that still a thing?) go, but the rest of the board is pretty welcomiing.

Browse about and add your thoughts. Or visit the Thread Games and join a couple to help boost ye olde poste counte (I’m currently adding 1-2 posts/day in the ‘lose a word, add a word’ thread).
