There’s no introduction thread here because it’s not really part of board culture as it is on some forums. Just browse around, get a feel for the SDMB and join in discussions when you feel moved to do so.

Welcome! It’s a good place to hang out, and an excellent place to get questions answered. I’d highly recommend becoming familiar with the operating rules in each forum, as it’s easy to get yourself in trouble if you don’t. The Prime Directive is: Don’t be a jerk. Other than in the Pit, anyway, where it’s an art form.

There have been a few welcome threads that outlined some of our quirks. I’m waking up slowly today, so the only one I remember is that people will expect links to a photo if you talk about your cat.

Then again, when has anyone who started out with a generic, nothing-to-offer “hi I am a newbie” thread (in the wrong forum no less) ever had staying power? Even when welcomed sincerely and often?

I fear Carmella was yet another drive-by. Not even the courtesy of a reply. Another one scared away.

But she (or he) can still prove us wrong! Carmella, you’re up! Prove me wrong…I’d love to see that.

I started my first thread 2 days ago:

Some observations:

  1. Moderators act rudely and arbitrarily
  2. Posters feel entitled to a citation if they demand one
  3. It’s forbidden to insult a fellow poster, but you can get around that by insulting an entire group (see my attack on Canada, it was really only directed at one crazy chick from Newfoundland)
  4. This is obviously a written forum, so grammar, diction, and clarity count
  5. Some people do not take being contradicted well. Like, at all. (see the crazy Newfoundland chick in my link)
  6. Most posters appear to be really good sports, and can provide excellent information
  7. The terms “ninjaed” and “whooshed” mean something, but I don’t know what

  7. Ninjaed means somebody beat you to saying what you just posted, usually by just a minute or so. Whooshed means somebody said something in jest, but you thought it was serious; so you got “whooshed”.
