The Chiefs look like Virginia Tech. No passing game, great defense, rushing and special teams.
Chiefs hold on for the win at home against SD. Didn’t see that one coming…
Oh yay, another year of “how many Chargers does it take to tackle a ball carrier?”
(Answer: “I don’t know, I never made it without holding. Ask Mr. Rivera.”)
My favorite team had high expectations headed into the season.
Week 1 mistakes and bad plays culminated in a blown desperation last gasp end zone pass play in the final minute against a team predicted to be pretty weak.
That’s right … my favorite NFC team is Dallas and AFC team is San Diego.
Glad week 1 is over. Sheesh!
[PS: I had strike 1 in SDMB Survival with the 49ers to top it off]
I think Sanchez (aka Captain Dumpoff) is actually a liability to that team. I picture them as the 2000 Ravens, where they get to and win the Superbowl based on defense, running game, and a veteran quarterback who just had to do enough not to lose the games.
I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. The Jets went into this season with supreme talent everywhere but where it counts the most, and it’s going to doom them again.
They don’t even have Thomas Jones to cover up part of the hole this time.
Mark Sanchez =/= Trent Dilfer
He’s not a veteran except in the sense that he’s not a rookie- and Mark Brunell and Kellen Clemens are not going to be able to save their season.
The rematch in week 13 should be interesting after both teams have found whatever groove they are going to have this season.
Ha, yeah, me too. Their offense looked incredibly anemic outside of LT and a couple of their olinemen.
I love that this performance came from a Rex Ryan team…couldn’t have happened to a classier guy.
I think the other main thing I took away from Week 1 is that the Chiefs are also pretty good everywhere but at quarterback. I wonder how good they’d look right now with Tyler Thigpen under center instead of Cassel.
There’s some weird shit going on. I have Matt Schaub as my starting QB in one of my fantasy leagues, and when I saw they had beaten the Colts and put up 34 points I was ecstatic, certain Schaub had won an aerial shootout with Manning. Then I saw the statline…and read about Arian Foster. I was like “WTF? Where did this guy come from?”
Good times.
Apparently Foster is really just that good, because the Texans were 30th in rushing last year despite everyone keying on the pass.
What pisses me off is that I own Foster in the GB Fantasy League and had him on my bench. I wonder if he will be that good all year.
Fox Sports reporting Ryan Grant done for the season.
Sigh. Grant was one of my RBs on my fantasy team. On the upside, I’ve also got Foster. Sadly, I didn’t start Foster, so I got no points for his spectacular performance against the Colts. He’ll be starting this week though, so I hope he keeps putting up great numbers…
My thoughts:
Ravens vs Jets: Don’t condemn either offense just yet. The defenses were sublime. For all the hype around the Jets’ DB’s, the front 7’s ability to shut down Ray Rice and McGahee were superb, especially at the line without Kris Jenkins. The Ravens d-line is also excellent, particularly Ngata. If you want to beat the Ravens this year, you have to pass especially since they don’t have Ed Reed.
SD: They’re going down. They’re too banged up on D and missing too many pieces on O. Ryan Matthews doesn’t have the talent of LT.
KC: Dwayne Bowe disappeared, which is a really bad sign. I’m going to mark this down as SD losing instead of KC winning until I see more of what KC can do.
Swell. Just saw it on SI.com, as well.
Brandon Jackson’s not bad, but I don’t think he’s as smart a runner as Grant. And, the Pack was only carrying two halfbacks on the roster (they cut Kregg Lumpkin, their third-stringer, on the last round of cuts, and the Bucs snapped him up.
They’ve signed some guy named Dmitri Nance (looks like he was in Atlanta’s camp; no idea if he was a draft choice or a free agent of theirs).
They also put DE Justin Harrell on IR. He’s proven to be a complete wash-out as a first-rounder.
Kris Jenkins for the Jets is done for the season too. Same tear as last year.
My most hated NFC teams are the Eagles and Cowboys. In the AFC, it’s the Jets and the Chargers.
What a fucking awesome weekend of football.
So, with so many supposedly-good teams losing week 1, who is right to panic, and who should soldier on?
What makes the difference?
I think the biggest worries have to be in the Bay Area where the 9ers were supposed to be much better than the Seahawks and the Raiders were supposed to be competitive.
