NFL 2010 Week 1 discussion.

Yeah, I’d go with Cowboys loss more than Redskins victory. Ain’t it wonderful?

Me, too.

As an indicator of what to expect from the Redskins in upcoming games, it wasn’t promising. But it’s one in the W column for us, and one in the L column for Dallas. I’m good with that.

Indeed…I still vividly remember the playoff game in which Vick just destroyed the Packers. Was having flashbacks to that game yesterday!!

I need to pick up a backup quarterback, as my main backup was supposed to be Matthew Stafford. My plan is to get Rothlisberger later, so I need somebody to replace Stafford for the next few weeks. My main candidates, in order of preference:

  1. Vince Young: I’m worried about how much CJ will affect his stats.
  2. Matt Hasselbeck: are the Seahawks back? I didn’t get to watch the game, but the o-line seemed to be doing a great job.
  3. Michael Vick: great team, but I hate the way he plays. He’s always on the verge of getting injured.

As much as I hate Derek Anderson and would looove to see Max Hall given a shot at starting QB, this is correct.

Fitz missed nearly all of camp and stated that he was only at about 75% by gameday.

That said, I’d take a 75% Fitz over a 100% anyone-else. I would reckon that DA and Fitz will work it out this coming week or next, otherwise I call curtains for Anderson and I welcome our new Max Hall overlord.

It pains me to see us barely eke out a win against the Rams though. Not a cheerful indicator of what this season likely has in store for us.

Yeah, it’s tough not to have a franchise quarterback. When your team gets an old guy who still has a few miles left on his arm, you have to be willing to let go the next season.

#2.

I wouldn’t be worried about Vick getting injured. I’d be worried about him not getting the starting job. Andy Reid didn’t trade McNabb away just to bench Kolb for good after one half.

I vote for Young. Hasselbeck has had a lingering back injury for 3 years and it will probably recur at some point. Plus Young ought to be good for two touchdowns nearly every week (between passing and rushing).

Frankly, I would have called the Superbowl play incomplete, and while watching the game I was convinced they were going to and surprised that they didn’t.

NO IT’S NOT! People keep promoting this outright lie in an attempt to undermine the rule, and it’s starting to get really annoying. The rule applies exactly the same everywhere on the field. It applies to every catch by any player, including interceptions. It would NOT be a fumble, it would be an incomplete pass.

Also, the ground cannot cause a fumble.

Theoretically, let’s say he dropped the ball without it touching the ground. A fumble into the end zone is safety and still not a touchdown.

The rule that contradicts this rule is the ‘breaking the plane’ rule. If the receiver catches the ball in the end zone, rolls through the end zone and out of bounds, then drops the ball before standing up, that negates the plane rule: once the ball breaks the plane, it is a touchdown regardless of whether it is fumbled afterwards.

It’s an amazingly crappy rule, but it works, has clear boundaries, and any two people can agree what happened. There’s no judgment involved.

Hypothetical counter-example: The WR catches the ball in the end zone, gets two feet in bounds, then gets knocked unconscious by hitting the field goal post. He is carried off the field in a stretcher with a broken neck and needs a year of rehab and surgery before he can stand up again. Does this mean he has to hold the ball the entire time?

If it helps, the “breaking the plane” rule only applies to ball carriers, and a receiver isn’t a ball carrier unless he runs after the catch, which is not possible when catching in the end zone. Even when catching a ball in the end zone, the ball itself doesn’t have to break the plane. Like that Santonio Holmes Superbowl-winning catch; that ball never crossed the plane, IIRC. (Sideways beyond the pylon no longer counts as breaking the plane.)

Vince Young is available now? Get him. Now.

8 team league. Even Austin Collie and all the Cleveland and Seattle RB’s are still available. Felix Jones and Marion Barber didn’t go until the last 2 rounds. Joseph Addai is my flex starter. It’s kind of a pain since the commish didn’t take off a WR spot and put in the flex…they added the flex so 3WR + 2 RB + Flex.

I watched the tape of the CJ catch again, and I’m leaning towards the “he got robbed” camp. The reason is that he was down by contact. If he fell over or was diving, I can see the ruling stand. However, the reason he fell was contact, therefore as soon as his butt touched the ground, in bounds, the play was over.

But overall though, I would agree it is CJ’s fault. He had plenty of opportunities to wrap it up, and all players know they have to play until the whistle sounds.

He’s not down by contact until he actually completes the catch. Which he did not.

49er fan checking in.

I’m pissed, at the whole team and the coaches especially. Yes, Alex Smith didn’t play well. Neither did anybody else, and no QB was going to have success with the playcalling. I hope Crabtree got enough of a face slap from his poor performance to pull his head out of his ass.
And what’s with having Gore in on every single play? Are Singletary and Raye capable of mixing it up?

On defense, they need to turn up the pressure to help out the CBs, 'cause they pretty much suck balls. There are gaping holes back there and no team it its right mind would run much on us. Might as well send a few more LBs in there. The safeties can at least limit damage on shorter hot routes.

We have a bunch of tough games early on, but this wasn’t supposed to be one of them. I expect general playmaking to improve. The thing I’m most worried about is the coaching conservatism. And speeding up the playcalling, too. It was like plays were being sent down by carrier pigeon.

Arrrrrrrrrgh. I want more than sneaking into the playoffs via weak division, but I’m worried I won’t even be able to settle for that.

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I’m in the midst of a lightning storm, and the power has already flickered off once. Not that I’m worried about missing the Jets kickoff in 15 minutes, because, you see, I live 50 miles from New Giants Stadium.

That means this lightning storm is also threatening the stadium, which ESPN reported 5 minutes ago has been cleared for fear of lightning. Looks like a major delay is possible for tonight’s early game.

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Maybe the Jets and Ravens are equally tough, making things difficult for one another. It has looked, to the contrary, like they are both way over-hyped, and both were terrible. The only way the Ravens have even moved the ball is via penalties on the Jets. A lot of those calls looked pretty dubious.

What a fitting end to the game too. Fourth and 10, and the receiver runs a 9 yard route, straight out of bounds.

From an AFC north perspective, I would have clearly preferred a Ravens loss. However, I take plenty of satisfaction in Ray Rice running for 43 yards on 21 carries. Combined with a pretty ineffective passing game, the Ravens don’t look all that impressive.

And the Jets look even worse. Why, oh why, couldn’t I have lost power?

The best thing I can say about the Jets is…How about those Giants?

The Chiefs seem to always be good at special teams. This year’s version seems to be keeping up that tradition.
