That is absolutely terrible. At worst, that’s a no-call, but it certainly should have been OPI.
Going into the season, they were seen as a good team, but not necessarily among the very best; the Sporting News had them ranked as the #11 team at the start of the season, and Sports Illustrated had them all the way down at #22; they were generally seen as being in a tough division, and not the best team in that division.
I think the fact that the Cardinals are the only remaining undefeated team has gotten people’s attention, and, as noted, they are at the top of the weekly “power rankings.” It’s still early in the season, and I’m not sure that people really see them as the “best team in the NFL.” But, for now, they do have the best record, and that may make them “the best team right now.”
Indeed so.
Any given week, right? I’d give Arizona a reasonable shot to win against any team right now. There are, at best, a handful of teams you can say that about.
That goes out the window if Kyler Murray goes down or if they get hit with the injury bug but there aren’t many teams that would do well without their starting QB.
Okay, thanks. Maybe I need to switch to a more tuned-in source of sports news
Saints looked good against Washington. Sloppy win but still not very close at the end. And they should get back a bunch of key players from injury after the bye.
In fairness, if the Chiefs started 5-0 like everyone assumed they would the Cardinals probably wouldn’t be in the conversation. But because the Chiefs have struggled out of the gate this year, it kind of leaves the “best team the league” title up for grabs. And I can think of a whole bunch of teams in that conversation. (Packers, Bills, Buccaneers, Cardinals; possibly even the Chargers. And I’m probably forgetting an obvious one.) EDIT: Oh yeah, the Cowboys. And the Rams? Plus of course the Chiefs themselves.
Interestingly, the Cards are 2.5 point underdogs at Cleveland next Sunday.
After last night, this KC fan would pick the Bills as the “best team in the league” right now.
As the other State Farm spokesman famously said, Chiefs fans probably just need to “R-E-L-A-X”, but the defense is a disaster, receivers are dropping the ball, and Mahomes seemed to throw a lot of balls into the ground when not throwing it to the wrong team (I gave up after the 3rd quarter interception).
He also missed the PAT on the pack’s first TD, way back in the first quarter. If he had made that the Pack would have won in regulation by one point and the entire field goal fiasco would have been avoided.
We’ll see what happens when the play the packers. ![]()
That Cards/Browns line will be interesting to watch as the week goes on. Browns have a lot of injuries on defense. This could be another shootout, which I think favors Arizona.
Betting lines for NFL games (at least, when they are initially set) typically bake in a 3-point advantage for the home team. Taking that into account, the line could suggest that, on a neutral field, oddsmakers feel that the two teams would be pretty closely matched.
Indeed, the line opened at Browns -3. It’s moved to -2.5, and, as @Barkis_is_Willin suggested, it could move even more as the week progresses.
Quite frankly, the 3-2 Browns could be 5-0. They should have beaten KC in Week 1, and could have beaten the Chargers yesterday.
Factoid, courtesy of CBS Sports:
The Jaguars are the only NFL team in the Super Bowl era to have not successfully kicked a field goal through the first five weeks of a season. They’ve used two kickers so far: Josh Lambo is 0-3, and Matthew Wright is 0-2. They have also missed three out of their twelve extra point attempts.
Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster dislocated his shoulder in yesterday’s game against the Broncos. He will need surgery on it, and is expected to be out for four months, effectively ending his season.
Damn, I like JuJu. He always seemed like a good kid, especially for a WR. It helps Seattle’s odds next week for him to be out but even still I’d rather he get to play.
Breaking news that Gruden is out as coach of the Raiders after the email fiasco.
I’d read, earlier this evening, that the NFL had sent the Raiders additional emails; this ESPN story, from a few minutes ago, indicates that the emails included anti-gay and misogynistic comments.
I just want it known that I hated Gruden before hating him became cool. Of course, I hated him because he was one of the most overrated coaches ever, because he’s faker than a three dollar bill, and because he’s a horrible commentator, not because he’s a gay and woman hating racist piece of human garbage. I only found out about that right now.
And, as an aside, I’d be willing to bet at least a third of current NFL coaches have said the kind of things Gruden says in the emails, there just isn’t a paper trail.
And this wasn’t known before he was hired? We’re just finding out now?
There is some thought that people of a “certain generation” use gay slurs as a part of language without meaning prejudice. Leaving the analysis of that “theory” alone for a moment…
Definitely not the case with Gruden. He’s pure homophobic.
