Also, this just in: Tom Brady is still a monster.
Yeah. They really botched it on my station. They had been showing the Packers-Bengals game in overtime and cut out to the start of the Cowboys game when the ball was snapped on the final play. Not cool, even for someone waiting to watch the Cowboys.
I didn’t expect much from the Giants this year but my expectations have been lowered to subterranean depths. They would need to have 11 Lawrence Taylor level defensive players to make up for all the injuries on offense. Dallas should be able to coast to a division win this year.
2 things.
-
Wins are an incredibly useless and stupid way to measure QB performance.

With passer ratings like that, I always like to check CAY (completed air yards) to see the kind of passes the QB was completing. Mayfield’s CAY: 4.4. Herbert’s CAY: 7. Herbert was throwing further downfield, while Baker was sinking and dunking.
I think Josh Allen might be the real Mahomes.
Couldn’t be more than the three chances at a game-winning FG that Giants kicker Jay Feely had against the Seahawks in November 2005. He missed all three, including one in overtime, and the Seahawks eventually booted a winner of their own and won 24-21.
Well, maybe I misspoke after all. Did Crosby get 4 chances yesterday, not 3? Maybe I misposted…
were the raiders that horrible again this week? I wonder if the breaking e-mail scandal had anything to do with it
Through almost 5 weeks we haven’t had any Scorigami games yet. Had GB-CIN ended in a 22-22 tie that would have been the first one.
If you are unfamiliar with Scorigami, check it out.
The Browns managed to lose 47-42 last year, too, during the Lamar poop game, so that’s at least a little unusual.
There were a few things but the back breaker was this https://twitter.com/i/status/1447332454512177154
That’s OPI if anything, with the defender just getting mugged, but it happened on a crucial 4th and 8 and extended a drive that probably would’ve been a game ender had it been called correctly. There were others - a Browns o-lineman who was getting his head torn off by a d-lineman got called for holding, there were several PI penalties that should’ve gone against the chargers that didn’t, including on the final play of the game where a defender deliberately dove into David Njoku’s leg to take him out and then the ball landed exactly where he would’ve been but went uncalled. Refs always swallow the whistles on hail mary plays though, if you’re an NFL coach you might as well coach your guys to deliberately tackle receivers like the chargers did.
Fun stat: the Browns are the first time in NFL history to put up 40+ points, 0 turnovers, and lose.
I agree about wins over the long term as a determination, but looking at those 2 stat lines I think most people would say, objectively, that Hebert had the better game. Both good, but I’d take Hebert’s.
I would take either. Twice the touchdowns is nice of course but touchdown stats are noisy.
I look at Mayfield’s 32 attempts for 305 yards (in the neighborhood of 10 yards per attempt) versus Herbert’s 43 attempts for 398 yards (over 9 yards per attempt) and they both look pretty good to me.
Three chances at a game-winning kick; he also missed a field goal, which would have given the Packers the lead, with just over 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter, which, due to the amount of time left in the game, wouldn’t have technically been a game-winning kick.
I hate to blame refs for a loss, but my goodness they were bad in this game. Winning on the road against a very good team is hard enough, but you pile on bad officiating and one absolute game changing egregious PI call, on 4th down even, and it’s hopeless.
And the Browns suffered a ton of injuries and get the best team in the NFL next week. Blah.
They are playing the team with the best record. Does anyone think Arizona is actually the best team in the NFL right now?
Disclaimer: I get most of my football coverage from NPR and the BBC.
They are in the conversation.
NBC and SI power rankings both have them #1. ESPN has them #2.
