I’d also expect any effect from dedicated fans to be minimized, for any game as big as the Superbowl. Surely lots more people than usual are betting on this game, and it’s getting everyone’s attention, so dispassionate betters would be quick to jump on any opportunity.

Interestingly enough, two years later in the Super Bowl between the Broncos and Seahawks, a safety again was the first score. A bad snap on the first play from scrimmage sent the ball into the end zone, where a Denver running back fell on it for a safety. The score, which occurred just 12 seconds into the game, is the earliest score in Super Bowl history.

Ironically, the Seahawks also scored 12 seconds into the second half; returning the kickoff for a touchdown.

A decade or so ago, that would have been ruled a catch. Changes to the rules mean that a receiver now needs to maintain possession of the ball after initially catching it, long enough to make a football move, or going to the ground.

The rule (source):

A player who makes a catch may advance the ball. A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) in the field of play, at the sideline, or in the end zone if a player, who is inbounds:

a. secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and

b. touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and

c. after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, performs any act common to the game (e.g., tuck the ball away, extend it forward, take an additional step, turn upfield, or avoid or ward off an opponent), or he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so.

And, this note:

If a player, who satisfied (a) and (b), but has not satisfied (c), contacts the ground and loses control of the ball, it is an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground before he regains control, or if he regains control out of bounds

I think it was close, but by the rules as written, probably the right call to reverse it.
