NFL 2022: Week Nine times out of ten

One of the rare NFL trade deadlines that actually meant something. The Bills swap RBs with the Colts (Zach Moss and a conditional 5th round pick for Nyheim Hines). The Dolphins got Jeff Wilson from the Niners (who upgraded by getting CMC) for a 5th round pick, but then one upped themselves by getting Bradley Chubb and a much later 5th round pick for a first rounder, a 2024 fourth rounder, and Chase Edmonds. The Bears, hewing closely to the “only one headcase on the roster at any time” traded away Roquan Smith (for a 2nd and a 5th, but, more importantly, for the opportunity to not meet his contract demands), and gave up a 2nd to get Chase Claypool from the Steelers. Finally, the Jaguars gave up a 5th next year and a 2nd in 2024 for Calvin Ridley. They’re hoping (and made conditions on the picks) that Calvin, who has been excellent, will be successful in dealing with his mental health and gambling issues). And there were even more trades, but I’m bored now.

In other news, festering ass-boil Dan Snyder is looking into selling the Washington Commanders. I’m tempted to say anyone would be an improvement, but the race to the bottom among NFL owners is always sickening. Also, one of my favorite guys, Ray Guy, passed away this week. Punt one out for him.

Here’s your games, with the lines and over/under:

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Ravens at Saints Saints +2.5 48

First thing that jumped out at me was the Packers, who have been playing horribly on offense, were favored by only 3.5. I’ll be smashing that line, as I expect the Aarons and the defense to greatly improve. Not sure why I expect that, it hasn’t happened yet. But hope springs eternal.

The Thursday night game is all but forgettable. Might I suggest Rings of Power. Or XCOM 2. Or getting a broken glass enema.

The Sunday early games have the potential for some surprisingly interesting games. Lions at home looking for their first win against the underachieving Pack. The Raiders/Jags should be close, at least, but one can hope for some good football played in there somewhere. And, oddly enough, I may peek in on the Bears/Dolphins, just because I love under-thrown passes and looks of confusion on players faces.

There are only two afternoon games, and they both could be interesting. The Seahawks are suprisingly good, especially the defensive turnaround they’ve had this year, and the Cards continue to underperform with their talent level. And Brady v. Stafford … was an interesting matchup last year, but this year … not so much.

The Monday night game could be interesting too. If both teams play well. Which isn’t very likely.

So, how’d your team do on the trade deadline (I’m a Packer fan, and they’re rarely involved)? How much do you hate Dan Snyder (on a scale of 1 to 1. With 1 being I hate him with the heat of a thousand fiery suns)? What is your opinion on punters in the Hall of Fame?

Let’s hear from you.

Uhh, because they’re playing the Lions?

I’m surprised the Chiefs are so heavily favored. Both teams are 5 - 2. The TItans tend to fly under the radar (being in Tennessee will do that) but they have the best RB in the league and the best punter.

Speaking of punters, RIP Ray Guy, who passed away today.

I initially thought the line was because TEN was starting a rookie QB but I heard that Tannehill is going to play.

“The Packers think they’re awful, let’s show ‘em how it’s done, boys!”

Let’s go trap game

Who are your other favorites, Lafleur, Lombardo, and de Maupassant?

Nah. More like:

Ray Guy (Punter)
Michael Person (Tackle)
Charles Mann (DE)
Ron Fellows (DB)
Mark Dude (DT)
Jimmy Childs

When I was growing up in the '70s, Ray Guy was, far and away, the best punter in the NFL; as a nerdy student of kicking and punting, I made sure that I got him on my APBA Football team (my friends and I played an all-star league with the game).

Guy is still the only pure punter in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the namesake for the college football award for the best punter of the year.

Rest in peace, Ray.

The Packers manage to play down to the level of their opponent. They might get an early lead, but then will do nothing for over 2 quarters and if they win it will be nail biter.(or at least that has been the pattern)

Brian

Quoted for truth.

Rodgers has thrown two red zone interceptions. One, he nails a defender in the head and it pops up, and the other, he woefully underthrows his LT on a trick play.

Yes, the OLine has sucked, his WRs are young, and the defense hasn’t been great, but Aaron really needs to take a long look in the mirror.

Oh he looks in the mirror all the time. Probably his favorite activity.

I was sort-of watching, but have now stopped. It is not quite as nice as it was last weekend, but it is sunny so may clean the leaves out of my gutters (a more enjoyable activity…)

Brian

Miami is really, really fun to watch. I’m rooting for Tua. He got a ton of flak early in his career for…? Not sure. He has been awesome so far this season

Which makes it even more puzzling, that he hasn’t said: “What the fuck did I do with my hair? it’s hideous.”

I think Pat McAfee will get there eventually. That guy was freakin’ amazing. I once saw him recover his own onside kick.

Make that three, as he again underthrows a receiver at the goal line.

8-0, Lions, early 3rd quarter.

The Lions tried their best to pull a loss out of it, but somehow managed a victory. When a game against the Packers is what you need to break a losing streak, things are bad in Green Bay.

The Jets beat the supposedly-invincible Bills 20-17. They had a 13-play, six minute, 86 yard drive for the game winning FG, then held the Bills on 4 downs to win the game.
