NFL 2022: Week Nine times out of ten

It’s so lovely to see Aaron Rodgers continue to implode. I used to like him before he went off the deep end; now I just enjoy seeing him suffer.

Speaking of imploding, the Patriots manhandled a JV Colts team, but still managed to look bad doing it (on offense). Mac Jones looks lost out there: slow on his reads, happy feet, etc. He looked better as a rookie last year. Despite finally climbing above .500, this team is going nowhere with Mac unless he gets his head right. Not sure if this is a sophomore slump or last year was a mirage or if the departure of McDaniels has him lost (maybe all three?)

Also nice to see the Bills humbled at home, even if it was the Jets doing it. I think Allen and the Bills are buying their own hype too much, so nice to see them take one on the chin and come back to the mortal realm. And who the fuck are the Jets this season?

Mac Jones’s career. (Not directed at you)

Promising rookie takes Patriots to playoffs > Lose Offensive Coordinator > “Genius” head coach hires failed head coach/defensive coordinator to be offensive coordinator. > Mac Jones sucks and should be benched.

I fully endorse every part of this.

Huh.

What the fuck? I like these ex-players, but shouldn’t they try and hire somebody who has actual coaching experience?

Am I wrong in thinking that Irsay is big into personal connection, and would rather hire someone he feels comfortable with than some great technician?

I’m not saying that makes it a good decision, I’m just trying to understand this very strange hire.

I will point out that Jim Irsay, the owner of the Colts, is yet another in a long, long line of NFL fail-sons who owe their entire career/success to the fact their fathers were successful and then died. Anything is possible.

I mean, if you think of it as a “We want to get the first pick in the draft but don’t want to look like we’re tanking games” move, it could make sense. Bring in a beloved former player who fans will like and maybe the pill will be less bitter.

I’m just grasping at straws here, honestly.

Apparently he’s the first person to be named head coach with any college or pro coaching experience in the last 60 years.

Also, nobody on Indy’s offensive staff has play calling experience.

I thought this said Dracula, Georgia, and thought it was awesome this guy is from a place called Dracula.

No, it’s Dacula.

Also nice to see the Bills humbled at home, even if it was the Jets doing it.

The Jets were the home team.

Wait… Did Irsay not need to follow the Rooney Rule?

Right. I remember one of the Bills celebrating a TD to a big contingent of Bills fans in the stands and got confused.

Oh, they announced him as interim for the rest of the season. So no need to interview candidates.

And they had already conveniently fired their OC (who happened to be black) the week before and who would normally been a leading candidate, considering the offensive woes and need for a play-caller

Funny you should mention that, because there’s a lot of talk in the media as to why the Colts didn’t hire a Black coach, but instead hired a white man with zero head coaching experience at the NFL or collegiate level.

I can’t imagine Saturday being anything other then a placeholder until the current crop of coordinators become available at the end of the season. After the lawsuit(s) last year with black coaches claiming they were token interviewed without any chance at the job. I think you’ll see more of these types of hires going forward. If you intend to clean house, elevating anyone to the position with the intention of firing them no matter how successful they are looks bad.

If this is supposed to be a try-out for the full time gig, it violates the spirit of the Rooney Rule at a minimum (and potentially robs Colts fans of up and coming coaches who’d love a chance at just an interview).

I can’t see how this was intended as a placeholder thing.

If it’s strictly an interim gig, there were other coaches on staff with either head coaching or Super Bowl experience. Gus Bradley and John Fox aren’t exactly spring chickens. Nobody would be shocked if either was passed up for the eventual full time gig or outright fired and neither could conceivably be seen as a token diversity temporary hire. And nobody would have any doubt either (or even some of the other coaches on staff) could keep the team functional through the rest of the season while the search for a full time replacement was underway.

Yeah, it’s not a good look for the Colts, and it also looks like we’re just punting on the season with half of it still remaining.

At this rate, I wouldn’t be shocked if Amy Adams Strunk shaved her head and announced she would live the rest of her life in seclusion at a Himalayan monastery.

Other than the Titans, it’s been a race between AFC South owners for being inexplicable, dumb, racist, insane, or all of the above.
