NFL 2022 Week Six Ways to Sunday

Yeah that certainly didn’t age well.

So after that pathetic overtime I went back to see what the Broncos did. First drive was a three and out: handoff, handoff, incomplete. Second drive was also a three and out: handoff, handoff, incomplete. Third try was not the charm as they muffed the punt.

That’s not the overtime script when you have a franchise quarterback you believe in.

Whether or not they believe in him, they sure invested in him.

Obviously the jury’s still out, but it certainly looks like Seattle got a heckuva steal on this trade.

So did Russ!

Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz broke the ring finger on his throwing hand in Thursday night’s win over the Bears, and had surgery on it yesterday. The team is not yet saying how long Wentz will be out, but backup Taylor Heinicke (who was their primary starter last year) will start on Sunday against the Packers.

Commanders fandom seems to think is a positive opportunity for the team, Wentz having been fairly underwhelming as a QB in the first six games this year.

Refresh my memory on Taylor Heinicke. He started in the playoffs the year before last, not last year, right? Then they gave him the starting job last year, then brought in Carson Wentz this year? Meaning Heinicke wasn’t all that great as the starter last year?

Just in case you didn’t think there was enough NFL broadcasts, here comes a Black Friday game for Amazon Prime in 2023.

The Chiefs have restructured the contract of all-pro tight end Travis Kelce, which frees up more money for salary cap space. Ostensibly they will be trying to sign somebody who can make an immediate impact. Names being bandied about include Carolina players defensive end Brian Burns, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver D.J. Moore. Another name mentioned is Odell Beckham Jr.

Personally I think they should go after a top-notch offensive lineman. Their running game has been virtually nonexistent all year, and Mahomes has been under constant pressure. He was sacked 3 times in the Buffalo game, and both of his interceptions were thrown while under duress.

I’m confused why Beckham Jr isn’t signed by anyone yet. I know he’s completing his rehab but you’d think he’d want to be with a team at this point to learn the playbook, start showing up to the other team activities, etc.

I guess maybe he’s waiting as long as he can to figure out which team has the best shot at a championship run? I don’t know. KC certainly seems like a good fit, he should’ve signed with them already.

It’s becoming apparent that the receivers KC brought in (Smith-Schuster and Valdez-Scantling) aren’t doing the job, so maybe this salary move is indeed for OBJ.

He’s coming off his second (?) ACL tear, right? And only played 14 or more games in a season 3 or 4 times and ran himself out of both NY and Cleveland (and now LA).

There are probably plenty of teams (including LA) willing to sign him. It seems more about what he wants from a contract.

Chiefs cleared $3 million or so in cap. The question becomes what is enough to satisfy him. He’s probably not going to clear $15+ million a year like he used to, but is he willing to settle for a lot less?

In last night’s game, DraftKings ran a promotion in an attempt to lure bettors to place money on the site. By virtually guaranteeing an easy-money bet, they hoped that bettors would place other bets as well.

The promotion was a prop bet that Justin Herbert would throw a touchdown pass. The original odds were -800, meaning that you would have to bet 8 bucks to win a dollar. Instead, DK boosted the odds to +100, meaning that you would double your money if you hit the bet. There was a maximum of $250 bet on the promo.

Well, the Chargers scored one TD, but it was on an Austin Ekeler run, not a Herbert pass. So if you were one of the bettors that figured to cash some easy bucks, you didn’t.

Herbert did set an NFL record last night, however, His 57 pass attempts are the most in NFL single-game history for a quarterback that didn’t throw a touchdown.

The discussion on the Chiefs’ receiving corps reminded me of an article I read when I was up in Green Bay this past weekend, visiting my family.

Obviously, the team’s receiver group is considerably weaker now than it was last year, with Davante Adams now a Raider, and Randall Cobb another year older.

The article I was reading noted that the team made a couple of not-huge moves in the offseason to try to shore up the receivers: they signed veteran Sammy Watkins, and traded up to draft Christian Watson in the early 2nd round. Neither of those moves has amounted to much: Watkins has only played in two games (6 receptions), and is now on IR with a hamstring injury. Watson missed much of training camp while recovering from knee surgery, and he, too, suffered a hamstring injury in the Giants game, which may land him on IR, as well.

Meanwhile, Cobb suffered an ankle injury (probably a sprain) against the Jets, and may be out for several weeks. Tight end Robert Tonyan is still rounding back into shape after last year’s ACL tear, but he’s currently leading the team in receptions, after catching 10 passes during the Jets game.

Apropos of nothing, speaking as someone who lives in Virginia who’s a Colts fan, I’ve yet to meet a fan of the Washington football team that calls the team anything other than the Redskins.

There are definitely a lot of fans on social media who insist that the team name should always be the Redskins.

I’m not one of them. Although Commanders isn’t a great name, I’m glad that they changed it. Redskins was offensive and stupid.

That’s pretty much correct. He came into a playoff game in 2020 against Tampa Bay and almost won. He took over as starter in 2021 after Ryan Fitzpatrick was injured and did an average job for the season, and imho played better than Wentz is playing now.

Not a Washington football fan (well, not that Washington) but agreed. I think there were a lot of names that were proposed that were better. But Commanders is “okay”. “Redskins” was most definitely not.

I do dig the uniforms somewhat. They’re not exciting but I like the Ben Day dots on the numbers.

Should have remained Washington football team. Kind of novel and fun.

Agreed. I hated the name Washington Football Team but The Washington Commanders is so much worse.
