NFL 2023-2024: Super Bowl 58

Have you noticed how in games when there’s a change of possession, one QB goes to the sideline while the other team’s QB is on the field? No benching required to execute your genius plan of talking to the QB.

Do you think that Andy Reid realized that if the clock had expired in OT he wouldn’t have gone to the next OT period? He would have lost? They scored with 3 seconds remaining

I do not think that that’s true. Playoff overtime allows for multiple overtime periods, and each team is guaranteed one full possession; I don’t think that the clock had anything to do with it. I believe that, if time had run out in that OT period, it would have been akin to time running out in the 1st quarter of regulation time.

Edit: If someone has a cite to say otherwise, I’d love to see it.

You can do a field goal with a second remaining.

Right. That’s what Romo and Nantz were saying at the end. They would have gone on to the 6th quarter.

Yeah, new playoff overtime rules. They would have just gone onto the next 15 minute period.

Sorry, but that’s a really dumb stunt to pull. It blows my mind how bonkers that is.

But hey maybe I’m the crazy one and everyone agrees with you that’s it’s a brilliant plan?

Can you cite ANY NFL playoff games that the starting QB is taken out for a series in favor of a backup who has barely played all season? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

No, I’m thinking that it’s the other way around.

This one hurts.

Seen on Twitter: “The San Fransisco 49ers can still win the Superbowl if Mike Pence has the courage to do the right thing.”

Yep, I was wrong. Here’s what I found:
“If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period — or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended — the teams will play another overtime period.”
So, KC could have continued possession into the next OT

Gotta agree with the above about pulling Mahomes. That’s one of the dumbest things I might have ever heard. Maybe there’s a world out there pulling a QB at the professional level somehow “gets his head in the game” but it sure as heck ain’t this world. Maybe if you had a rookie or second year QB playing in his first Super Bowl (and I doubt even then). But not one who’s already had several seasons’ worth of postseason experience.

The 49ers defense was solid all night, and it’s well known KC’s offense this season wasn’t exactly world beating. The thought of taking your best offensive weapon off the field boggles the mind

With the benefit of hindsight, the wisdom of the crowd (reflected by the betting to get the line there) was pretty good. It was tied at the end of regulation, and it really could have been a narrow margin SF win (or a narrow KC win) had only one or two things gone differently over the course of the game

Maybe someone will have the courage to ask Kyle Shannahan if he thought about the strategy of benching Brock Purdy for a series or two in the third quarter? They might have won if they did.

Maybe have some attack helicopters flown in to run some plays?

Question : If SF won the overtime coin toss, why did they choose to receive the ball first? I’d think with the new rules it would make sense to kick if you win the coin flip.

I agree with deferring, especially if you’ve been struggling on offense. I think maybe the players and coaches haven’t really thought about or planned for the difference in playoff overtime. The new rules haven’t been used until now, after all

I think they wanted to give their defense a rest. Maybe not the right call, but there’s some sense to it.

I’m looking at the box score. As one would expect in an overtime game, the stats are close:

First downs: Chiefs 24, 49ers 23
Total yards: Chiefs 455, 49ers 382
Passing yards: Chiefs 325, 49ers 272
Rushing yards: Chiefs 130, 49ers 110
Penalties: Chiefs 6-55, 49ers 6-40
Turnovers; Chiefs 2, 49ers 2
Time of Possession: Chiefs 38:31, 49ers 36:26

This game needed more Gabbert.

Mahomes just said that if they had won the toss, they would have kicked off. Getting the ball second means you know exactly what you need to do to win. If you are trailing, you will go for it on every fourth down.
