NFL Conference Championships (2010)

You could see the marker on the sideline, and it wasn’t even close.

False.

In one angle you could see the marker, but not the ball.
In the other angle, you could see the ball, but not the marker.

There really is no other possible interpretation, without bending credibility beyond recognition. I think I know which way you’ll go. Really, the only resolution to this will be a screen grab, which if you’re right, some Vikings fan is working on somewhere right now. If I’m right, they’ll all (except you) let it go.

Hmm, let’s see. Minnesota Vikings had five penalties for 32 yards, Saints had nine penalties for 88 yards.

Damn zebras giving the game to the Saints!

But did anyone notice how much FUN Brett was having?

He’s such a gunslinger!

That’s what a man looks like.

That’s not quite how I recall you describing him when he still had that G on his helmet

From tonight, regarding the Vikings/Saints game:

From two weeks ago, regarding the Packers/Cardinals game:

Did anyone here see the “touchdown” where the receiver had his knee down before crossing the plane early in the game? Fox did a screengrab of the play, and the knee was clearly down.

I’m pissed that the officiating was bullshit, I’m pissed that the Vikings booth didn’t call for the challenge, and I will forever call this a bullshit win. It shouldn’t have even gone into overtime.

And, IMO, the Saints are dirty players across the board…

Lots of people seem to think the PI call was bullshit because the ball was uncatchable, but isn’t that merely a bookkeeping thing? I mean, if the ball wasn’t even thrown to that guy it’s still a 5 yard holding penalty for an automatic first down, right? So why is it all of a sudden not a penalty at all if the ball is thrown to him?

How far was the pass, 20 yards or so? Is all the belly-aching about 15 lousy yards?

A friend of my wife’s in NO posted to his Facebook status page today that he was out “attending the fourth annual Brett Favre retirement party”.

Interesting overtime stats this year. Teams winning the toss went 8-6, and the team losing the coin toss never touched the ball 6 times.

For those scoring at home, that means if you lost the coin toss and managed to touch the ball, you went 6-2.

There wasn’t much contact at all on the play. It looked like the receiver actually fell over in the first place because he was trying to reach for a ball that was way over his head.

But in general, yes, the difference between a 40 yard and a 55 yard FG in sudden death first-to-a-FG OT is huge.

I am actually much happier that the Saints won with calls that allow Dio to cry and sputter for the next 20 years. If the Saints had destroyed the VIkings it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun. Vikings fans are the biggest whiners on the planet, ever since the Hail Mary.

You don’t need much contact in the post-Peyton era of not being allowed to touch receivers.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume that the 40 yard FG would have turned into a 55 yarder. I think they call the game differently if they didn’t have those extra 15 yards.

I truly felt bad for Farve out there… he ended on such a bad note. I’m torn between wanting him to retire and coming back for one more season. He did get CRUSHED this time around, just watching all those hits to the body and getting up- I felt like he was the underdog out there…

Now it’s all up to my Colts, who are just patiently waiting for their shot at greatness again.
One win away from winning it all once again. The cerebral assassin has 2 weeks to figure out how to take apart the NO defense… and I look forwards to it, but I REALLY am worried. I don’t want to see Peyton taking those shots like Farve did tonight. Hopefully the O-Line will realize they’ve got a hell of a task in front of them, and it’s time for the Prodigal Son to come back home and finish of good ol’ Dad’s team to get to the promised land…

Colts 30 Saints 27

I do believe that this is the 3rd consecutive season that Brett Favre ended his season with an interception.

Last year the final two offensive plays for the Jets are described as follows:

1-10-NYJ 1 (:17) (Shotgun) 4-B.Favre pass short left to 29-L.Washington to NYJ 5 for 4 yards. Lateral to 4-B.Favre to NYJ 7 for 2 yards. 4-B.Favre pass incomplete short right to 89-J.Cotchery. PENALTY on NYJ-4-B.Favre, Illegal Forward Pass, 3 yards, enforced at NYJ 7.

2-7-NYJ 4 (:07) NYJ #16 Smith in at QB. (Shotgun) 16-B.Smith pass short right to 29-L.Washington to NYJ 8 for 4 yards. Lateral to 87-L.Coles to NYJ 19 for 11 yards. Lateral to 16-B.Smith to NYJ 12 for -7 yards. Lateral to 24-D.Revis to NYJ 11 for -1 yards. Lateral to 31-A.Carroll to NYJ 24 for 13 yards. FUMBLES, RECOVERED by MIA-33-N.Jones at NYJ 22. 33-N.Jones to NYJ 22 for no gain (89-J.Cotchery).

Since he wasn’t on the field in the last play, his last pass as a Jet was called back for an illegal forward pass penalty. But wait, when an offensive penalty is enforced that play doesn’t officially count, so we back up to the last play in the previous drive…

1-10-MIA 29 (4:59) (No Huddle) 4-B.Favre pass short left intended for 83-C.Stuckey INTERCEPTED by 21-A.Goodman at MIA 25. 21-A.Goodman to MIA 28 for 3 yards (87-L.Coles).

hahahahahaha you are indeed correct. That’s awesome.

Relax, this is all just Dio-speak. I think I’ve figured out the translation of it.

When he says “Yet another fucking bullshit example of the Vikings getting fucked out of a win by the refs”, what he really is saying is “Nice game, Saints.” and slaps them all a high-five.

In the cold light of morning (well, what will be the cold light when the sun finally comes up, though it’s raining here still so I won’t get to see it), I do wish to note that, while Bret Favre should not have thrown the ball in question, it’s not clear that by doing so he “lost” the game for the Vikings. Had he run, I think he might have gotten back the 5 yards lost on the previous stupid penalty, but all that would have done is handed Longwell a 52-yard field goal attempt, not a gimme even in the dome. Of course, Favre being Favre, we’ll never know.

Of the calls on the Saints last drive, the one that is the most annoying is the spot of the ball on the fourth down play. I think the spot on the third down was also poor, and I’m disappointed in general in the unwillingness of the referee to overrule his crew in reviews. But you are supposed to have “clear and convincing” evidence or some such thing to overrule a decision and even on the fourth down play, it would take some serious work to try and establish exactly where the ball was under control of the player in relation to the line. I, personally, do not think he made it as far as it looked from his back side, but the most clear picture of the ball cannot be relied upon because it’s a telescopic picture zoomed in, and unless you know for a FACT that the camera was lined up with the down marker, even the sight of the marker over the shoulder of the player is inconclusive as to where the ball is when.

In short, it’s up to the side judges to get it right, and they had already shown their incompetence in this matter on the Saints’ “touchdown” where the player’s knee hit the ground while the ball was a full yard short of the end zone. One SJ runs in from the sideline closest to the spot and is indicating the ball is short; the other indicates touchdown, and we aren’t shown what conversation took place, but the TD ruling stood, and it was most egregiously wrong. It’s just one example of the poor job officials do spotting forward progress regularly in the NFL.

Time to electronicize the whole process somehow.

I’ve concluded that the reason I hate the Colts is the fact that Peyton is such a whiny little priss. See, e.g., his feeble attempt at a QB sneak yesterday, where he was driven backwards – and after which he immediately turned to the refs and said something. I’m not looking forward to seeing him pout after each and every incomplete pass in the Superbowl.

The PI call was bullshit, but it was bullshit because refs shouldn’t call it in those situations, not because they don’t. Every DB in the league has to know that if you grab a receiver with your back to the ball and your head down, you might draw a flag. I literally can’t remember the last time PI went uncalled because a pass was ruled uncatchable. It’s a dead doctrine.
