NFL Draft 2013

The Pats also fucked up the NFL’s plans for Andruzzi too, Belichick hates joy.

This has been a damn good draft for the Vikings.

Good pick for the Vikings.

I still think Hunter is a much better player than Patterson, but the similarities to Harvin make him a pretty compelling fit in Minny.

If the Rams don’t grab a RB it’ll probably be the first draft ever without a RB in the first round.

Damn. I was hoping for a loud rumbling noise coming from Minnesota, signifying a million heads exploding simultaneously. I was also picturing the reaction of our departed Vikings fan if they took Te’o.

The Hoodie cheated Andruzzi, and the Vikes cheated everybody else.

I really think Ogletree is gonna be a stud. Good pick for the Rams, wonder if there’s any chance Arthur Brown lasts until the Bears pick in the second round.

Man, that’s a shit pick by the Cowpokes.

It sucks for Geno to be invited to the draft and not get picked. Poor planning by the NFL.

Who?

How in the hell am I going to get home by 5:30 tomorrow?

Unexpected, but yes you are right. Dude is a monster. I foresee an imitation of Gronk and Hernandez in Cincinnati with Eifert and Gresham. Since Vaccaro and Reid were gone this pick makes sense value-wise for the Bengals.

Next question is where does Lacy get drafted?

Is Geno the “last man sitting” in the Green Room?

Various media sources seem to like the Vaccaro pick better than I do. I’m still not sold, but the Saints rarely ask my opinion on such things. I guess the biggest thing that is bugging me is we do not pick again until the third round, barring a trade, and safety was not really a glaring weakness compared to other spots on the defense.

Pretty much everybody is saying the Vikings were the clear winners of the first round. I dunno about giving up all those picks to jump back into the first round, but they got three guys with great potential to come in and make an impact this year.

Saw a couple of reports that said Geno Smith is going home, and will not attend the second round tomorrow. There is speculation that this might cause him to slip further…

I’d like to thank the Buffalo Bills (and to a lesser extent, the Cowboys) for injecting some hilarity into an otherwise dull draft. Lots of talent, but lineman after lineman just isn’t that exciting (and hard to criticize). But EJ Manuel at 16 will probably go down as another huge terrible QB pick. If you had bet me $100 before the draft that EJ Manuel would be the only QB in the first round, I would’ve taken that bet in an instant. Ah, the Bills.

As a Raiders fan, I’m pretty happy with the trade down to get Hayden. I’d rather we have started rebuilding the team from the line out but can’t deny CB is a position of terrible need, and McKenzie and Allen seemed to really like him. Getting a second rounder out of the trade down is great (and a rare feeling… is it like this for Patriots fans every single time?)

Nope, if only because he got up and left when the Rams were on the clock at #29. He said he won’t be back tomorrow, either.

So, the Green Room is empty?

It seemed like every time I saw Mingo actually rush the passer (not just play contain at the line, which he did a lot, especially against faster QBs) he just beat people. Just zipped by them like they weren’t there. I don’t know if he’s going to be a superstar, but I think he’ll probably be really good. At the very least I doubt he was a wasted pick.

I went back and watched some Lane Johnson since I hadn’t seen much of anything from him (it wasn’t until the last couple days that the top two OTs started getting mock drafted in the top three picks). On the plus side, he fits perfectly what the Eagles need in an OT and he’s a perfect replacement for Jason Peters when Peters’ time comes (he’s signed through 2014 right now). And Johnson has elite measurables at pretty much every possible place. His weakest combine stat was his bench, and he was still in the 78th percentile. Everything else is top of the line elite, notably his speed.

The downside seems to be everything else. He has limited experience and his technique is raw and unpolished. He reeks of a Combine superstar because he wasn’t very impressive elsewhere (outside of a Senior Bowl practice in which he was apparently God-in-the-flesh).

At least he isn’t the opening day LT, so if his biggest drawback is lack of experience, he’ll get some before moving to LT next season at the earliest. I hated the pick and I’ve talked myself into it as much as possible. I still don’t really like it. However, I have been damn near 100% wrong on Eagles’ picks I hated, so there’s that.

Finally, the Eagles’ projected offensive line might be the most athletic I’ve ever heard of. Jason Peters is a freak, everyone knows that. Over the last 13 years, Evan Mathis, Jason Kelce, and Lane Johnson are all in the top 1-3% of their respective positions in 40 times. I really hope they all stay healthy because it’ll be fun watching them all play together.

Going forward, I really wish the Eagles had like six 2nd round picks. I would be perfectly happy with Geno Smith in the 2nd round because it takes away the pressure of putting him in right away. His ceiling is really high if he has time to learn. Otherwise, I wouldn’t mind Cyprien, or Tank Carradine, or even one of the two NT prospects graded in this round (either of the Johnathans: Hankins and Jenkins).

I’ve heard the same things about Mingo, but the guy produces 4.3 sacks per year, so where are those skills translating into? I hear he’s fast and strong but has nothing in the way of technique or pass rush moves. It’s not a lack of other quality players on that defense letting the offense focus entirely on him, so what’s the deal? If he’s so great, how was he not productive in college? It’s not like he was some unknown from a div 2 school that got no coaching. He was at one of the premier football programs in the US.

That’s Dion Jordan you’re talking about, right? Because that sure sounds like Dion Jordan.

I have a confession. Every year after the draft, I go read the live draft threads for the Dallas Cowboys fan blogs and watch their misery in pseudo real time. It’s a good time.

Dion Jordan and Mingo do seem to have a similar skillset and lack of production at pass rusher - what makes Jordan so appealing is that he’s shown he’s pretty good at doing everything you could ask a defender to do and would easily make the transition to 3-4 OLB, whereas Mingo doesn’t have an edge in pass rushing skills, athleticism, and is more of a gamble with less demonstrated non-pass-rush skills. I don’t think Oregon had other good defensive players to take pressure off him too like Mingo did. Could be wrong, don’t really watch college football.

Some thoughts:

Kudos to those teams that traded down. In a weak at the top/lots of depth in the second and third rounds, that seems like the thing to do. The Bills get an extra pick before wasting theirs on EJ Manuel in the first.

While I feel bad for Geno Smith, leaving the Green Room and not coming back for Day 2 doesn’t show the maturity and ability to deal with adversity that I would want in my QB.

If I liked Sharif Floyd and Cordarelle Patterson, the Vikings had a great first draft day (that price to go get Patterson was a bit steep though). I really thought they’d go with Patterson over Rhodes, but none of those three would have lasted to their pick in the second round. Too bad for the Vikings I think Patterson will be Devin Hester-esque (a great return guy, but not a true starting #1 WR).

Tavon Austin is a very exciting college player, who excelled against the likes of mighty James Madison and defensive stalwarts Baylor. He’s fun to watch and fast as hell. None of which convinces me he’ll be able to cut it in the NFL. #8 was way too early for the second coming of Dexter McCluster.

I’m good with the Datone Jones pick for my Packers. The little bit I’ve watched so far (vs. Houston) shows me a guy who is quick off the snap (sometimes too much, he had an offsides penalty), good getting penetration, he keeps his eyes up, and he has a few pass rush moves, including being strong enough to bull rush. I’m not sure he can win in a phone booth, or beat double teams, but so far so good.

The Bears and Lions picks didn’t impress me at all. Ziggy Ansah has nice upside but is very raw and Kyle Long went a couple rounds earlier than he should. Thanks guys.

On the bright side, we got the consensus number one beard (and center) in the draft.

He was 242 lbs. coming out of high school and a two-star recruit. They didn’t miss; they just didn’t see his growth spurt coming.

The bit with the troops standing on stage was painfully awkward. None of them looked like they wanted to be there.

I was hoping against hope for the Bucs to trade back into the first for Eifert when he fell past 20. Seems like he’s the only elite TE in this draft.

Which is really, really stupid. Who gives a shit if he comes back for Day 2?
