NFL Draft 2013

Well to brighten my weekend, my wife got me tickets to the Packers-Cardinals pre-season game at Lambeau, where I have never been. So that is pretty damn exciting even if it is pre-season. Now I just have to get there.

Almost. I’m the guy in an old white 49ers cap, scratching the side of his face, then looking down at my phone to post how he’s not totally behind the pick.

I forgot to put this in my review of the Reid pick: his daughter is absolutely adorable.

Teams have a ton of time to figure out their cap room. Getting rid of draft picks, especially a second round pick, just to save potential salary is foolish. Hell, just trade it for a pick next year. Teams have until after training camp to get under the cap, and by then, they’ll have a much better idea of who is good enough to make the roster.

They don’t need to make those decisions now. Why pass on a guy with a second round grade to save hypothetical money at some time in the future against a salary cap that you can manipulate. Hell, the Rams found cap room to sign Chris Williams, cut him and sign your second rounder if he’s any better than that washout. Rookies are the cheapest guys you can buy.

I applauded his decision to do this, which caused meltdowns at football-centric message boards.

On the cap-space vs rookie pay front… Even if the 49ers were running into a problem there, they just squeezed out a little over $2 million in space by restructuring with Patrick Willis, which is just about what they’d need for a whole draft class.

Jags on the clock. These rounds are the ones that make a huge difference.

Well once again, here’s hoping the Lions can get a OL or CB worth a shit. Although maybe they should go with their strength. They are really good at kickers, if they spend their 2nd round on a kicker it will probably be a damn good kicker, which is better than a really bad WR.

As far a Ziggy Ansah… ehh. there wasn’t a number 5 player in the draft. whoever they got was going to not be worth the pick.

I love the fake Shah Khan mustaches on the fans.

The Jets are reported to be thinking about trading up to draft a QB. They have the seventh pick in the second round and several of the teams ahead of them are not going to draft a QB, so I am not sure they need to trade up in the first place, but what the hell.

My top guys here:
Z. Ertz, TE, Stanford
J. Banks, CB, Miss St
[del]J. Cyprien, S, FIU[/del] edit: nervermind, Jacksonville stole him.
J. Hunter, WR, Tenn

Not happy with any of the D-Linemen here. Of course, that means that’s where the 49ers will go. Jesse Williams? Margus Hunt? Tank Carradine? Damontre Moore?

Aaaaaaaand there’s a trade, like I wanted, YAY!!!

In the first three picks of the 2nd Round, three of my best remaining are gone.

If the next pick is Banks, you’ll be almost spot on.

I was ranking them based on 49er need. Cyprien was definitely my top guy.

Terms of the 49ers trade: giving up the #34 pick, they get a 2nd (#40) and a 7th this year and a 3rd Rounder for 2014. That would give them three 3rd Rounders next year, barring a Chiefs win streak pushing one of them to a 2nd. I really like the trade, especially because #40 is no worse than #34.

Slay over Banks? OK, I had him as my 10th corner, but I like his upside.

Te’o to the Chargers.

Is waiting for that scream to reach me from Cincinnati

Great! Can we finally shut up about Teo?

And a HUGE groan goes up from the crowd as Te’o’s name is called.

Really? I am not watching on TV, following on the ESPN webstream. But why wouuld folks groan (except for Chargers fans who think they don’t need an LB)?
