NFL Draft 2013

Another Packer trade down. And again with the Niners. What did TT get this time? A ham sandwhich? An 8th round pick?

Not the guy I wanted, but Lemonier was definitely on my radar. Good player. I’m happy.

Huh. I haven’t followed college football as closely since my kids have been alive (3 years), but it seemed like Jones was responsible for Teo’s horrible game at the National Championship. Plus, hasn’t he won, like, every award possible for a lineman?

I’ll be thrilled if Warford is a good pick; I’m just not as familiar with the guy from UK over the guy from Bama with an impressive resume.

Ahhh…went back and re-read your post. The first time through I totally missed the second sentence there. My apologies Gangster Octopus!

And Mathieu is still a fucknut from LSU. Total bust. If Al Davis were still alive, he would’ve drafted him with predictable results.

I think I was surprised more than anything, but the more I read, the happier I am with the pick. I’m not one of those freaking out about not taking Lacey, plus I think the FO anticipated a run on RB’s and went with it early. With a desperate need, I can’t fault that logic too much.

The biggest thing I like is the consistency with Steelers management. Like Jarvis Jones - that was such an obvious pick going into the draft, a 100% prototypical Steelers linebacker, but sometimes the obvious choice is the best choice. Colbert and co. never try to get “cute”, or try to outsmart the pundits. If it fits, it fits.

Same goes for Bell, he’s an absolute, 100% Steelers RB. Big, strong, blue-collar mentality with the potential to be an every down back. Even if this is “outdated” with all the run option QB stuff happening around the league, it never hurts to have a durable, workhorse RB to stretch the field and keep teams honest - especially in the AFC North.

Sometimes it works amazing (Ben), sometimes it works horribly (2008) - but that has more to do with the general inconsistencies with the draft than anything else. They know what they want, they draft smartly, and sometimes their choices - when strung together back to back - lead to a SB winning caliber team, but when it doesn’t work, they pretty much never cripple the team for years to come (although, again, 2008 wasn’t pretty…)

Anyway, this is the most insane draft I’ve ever seen. The next 5 years are going to be really, really interesting. I feel like the NFC West is going to be even more of a powerhouse really, really soon.

I still wish they had taken Brown but aside from that I’m starting to like these picks as I watch some of the videos of them, especially Bell.

Packers trade down again, now out of the 3rd round altogether. They got a seventh rounder from the Niners to move down 6 spots again (c’mon TT, you should be able to do better than that). And then they traded down from the Niners spot to the Dolphins 4th round pick (16 spots) and picked up the Dolphins’ 5th rounder. They now have two 4ths, three 5ths, two 6ths, and three 7ths tomorrow.

Me no likey. There is pretty good depth already on the Packers, and a lot of youth. Having more draft picks is very TT, but there is a lot of talent to have been had (Barkley, Quinton Patton, Barrett Jones, Johnathon Franklin, Brandon Jenkins). I guess at this point, more draft picks means more chances to find a diamond, but at some point you hit the point of diminishing returns.

Now I have to wait till tomorrow. At least it will be a full day of picks.

If he’s a subpar blocker, why can’t they just use him as an oversized WR?

“Williams” is the surname this draft isn’t it? Sylvester, Terrance, Shawn, Brennan, Brandon, and as-yet-undrafted Jesse and Trevardo.

Vance McDonald will be a great matchup problem in the red zone, sure. I want a little more out of him. Delanie Walker was a line-up-anywhere, mis-match-creating chess piece for OC Greg Roman. McDonald won’t be the same guy, but useful nonetheless.

Quick list of guys I’m excited about in the 4th round tomorrow.

WR Quinton Patton
RB Marcus Lattimore
C Brian Schwenke
OLB Khaseem Greene
QB Zac Dysert
DE Michael Buchanan
CB Sanders Commings
DT Akeem Spence
WR Ryan Swope

Little bit worried about how thin the DT and CB positions are at this point for the Bears, I think Greene is the most intriguing of that group. Would love Lattimore in the 5th if he lasts. There are still quite a few Centers available and I expect the Bears to get one and I think Schwenke is the best of them, but Jones wouldn’t bother me either.

I like the Packers moves. Everybody had basically said rounds 3-5 are not too different. Three just isn’t the talent there, imo. Might as well get s bunch of picks.

huh, the Rams drafted a matched set of WRs

Interesting night for the Redskins.

I didn’t know anything about David Amerson before tonight. He’s BIG for a corner and fast. Takes a lot of risks to make the big play. A hell of a lot like a bigger version of another guy the Skins already have on the roster.

They still need a safety, badly, and there were plenty available in the 3rd but they went with TE Jordan Hall instead. I assume they didn’t have 3rd round grades on any of the safeties and are confident one of their guys will still be there in the 4th or later. Anyway Hall may be the 2nd coming of Aaron Hernandez, or so I’m told. We’ll find out I guess. Feel like it’s more of an insurance policy if Fred Davis can’t come back the player he was.

Jordan Reed I mean.

Browns traded picks 104 and 164 to Miami for picks 111, 217 and WR Davone Bess.

So the Saints take an OT who is supposed to be a good fit, able to get outside and make blocks in space to set up that swing pass we use so often, and a NT that lost nearly 40 pounds between the SEC Championship and the draft. I’m liking this a little better than I did last night. Still wish we’d grabbed a pass rusher, but we’ll see what happens tomorrow…

I’m totally cool with that. I mean dropping 7 spots in the 4th round, big deal, and turning a 5th into a 6th or something. Bess is underrated, solid slot chain mover guy.

Almost an afterthought to the selection of a bunch of guys many of whom may not make the team that selected them, the best player in the NFL got a contract extension.

Aaron Rodgers added 5 more years to his current contract, adding a total of $110 million to his checkbook. Cha Ching. He’ll get $40 million guaranteed in 2013 alone, and supposedly his salary cap hit won’t go over $21 million a year. Likely there will be restructures going on along the way to deal with the salary cap. He is now the highest paid player to ever play the game, and he’s a metric buttload better than #2 on that list.

Lots of money, but had to be done. Good to have him in the Packer uniform for the next 7 years.

Now, back to the draft.

Some thoughts after watching a couple of Eddie Lacy’s tapes.

He’s not just the product of his offensive line. He’s very, very good at breaking tackles. Surprising short area quickness for such a big guy (5’11" 231 lbs). Nice shake and quick cuts. Faster than I thought. Needs more patience sometimes, but nice burst through an existing hole. Outstanding ypc and not much mileage (355 total carries, 6.8 ypc). Horrible in pass protection and subpar hands.

Overall: I’m still not his biggest fan, but he was clearly “Best player available” and great value when they picked him in the bottom of the 2nd round. Some glaring holes in the passing game need a ton of work, and I have questions about his desire to actually work at them in the NFL. He also has a long injury history that makes me think he may spend more time in the trainers room than on the field. I also question his heart. But with his talent and upside, he’s definitely worth the risk of a late second round pick.
