NFL Draft 2013

I really like the Bengals selection of TE Eifert, RB Bernard (yes!) and S Shawn Williams (the Bengals sure love them Dawgs!). I am utterly baffled by the pick of DE Margus Hunt. I don’t know jack about him as he played at a nobody school in a nobody conference, but apparently Mike Zimmer is in love with his upside, so I guess in Zimmer I trust.

The Bengals d-line was and is the deepest unit (and arguably the best, talent-wise) on the team so I don’t see this as a position of need, but I guess they felt he was too talented to pass up.

Anyone know anything about this guy? He’s a physical freak, but he looks too tall and lean to play DE in the NFL to me. Of course I said that about Michael Johnson, too, so…yeah.

He’s a great athlete who has just started playing football. He was a junior olympic athlete who went to SMU to train for the Olympics in discus and hammer throw. When SMU dumped their track and field program, he was convinced to give football a try. He’s been playing for a couple years for SMU as a DE/Kick blocker.

He’s a physical freak. He’s 6’8" tall, 277 lbs, ran a 4.6 40 yard dash and put up 38 reps in the bench press and had a 34.5 vertical leap. His athleticism and upside are all there, but he’s only been playing football for awhile and at a small school, so he’s completely raw and his technique sucks. His upside, however, is amazing.

He’s also my mancrush, so he has that going for him. He needs time, coaching, and the will to work hard, but he could be a special player. I really wanted him to play the DE in the Packers 3-4, but you bastards stole him.

Ha, nice. I just found this video of him back in Estonia on this giant swing-thing…I guess it’s called “kiiking”? Anyway, it looks terrifying! And imagine what kind of strength it must take to hold on as you get closer and closer to the apex…

That looks like a blast.

Disagree!

I’m a little underwhelmed with the Eagles draft so far. It’s solid but not exciting. On the other hand, I do like that the team seems to have a very clear idea of what type of players they want. That sort of focused vision seems to always pay off during the season. So while I’m not thrilled and rushing out to praise the draft, I’m surprisingly optimistic.

There are a few really promising players who have fallen just because of the overall depth of the draft or because of one issue holding them back (injuries, for the most part). So there are lots of gems left on the board. I am surprised that the Eagles haven’t bolstered their secondary, but I guess they did that during free agency. Still no idea what the team will do, but that makes it more interesting.

Well, that didn’t take long. The Eagles moved up to start the day. I wonder why? Doesn’t seem to be a guy who fell that has a lot of buzz that also seems like a fit.

Matt Barkley. Nice pick. Definitely not a typical Chip Kelly QB though.

Fuck if this team isn’t fascinating. I spent the morning reading up on Matt Barkley, wondering where he would go. What a surprising move. (And the irony of my comment about having a focused vision isn’t lost on me. Maybe everyone is just assuming what that vision will be)

If ever anyone doubted that Chip Kelly doesn’t have a “system” and that he will build scheme to fit his players, Matt Barkley is the trump card. I love the value (not too long ago that he was projected #1 overall), but I’m more surprised and intrigued than anything. What a bizarre QB group the Eagles have.

It’s weird, but for how uncertain this draft was leading up to it, players are largely coming off the board in the order they were ranked.

Man, Duke Williams might have been a nice replacement for Hayden.

Damn…was really hoping Schwenke would be a Bear.

Wow, Schwenke has the worst head shot in the entire draft.

Read up on Shamarko Thomas before the draft too. Not at all surprised to see Pittsburgh get him. How do they always end up with these types of guys?

Shit, Jones just went off the board too. Looks like thee Bears aren’t getting a top Center. And there goes B.W. Webb. He’s not a guy I’m in love with, but he’s a value at a position of need for the Bears. Hope the Bears can still find a future starter with this coming pick. Patton or Lattimore are my favorites, but Greene is interesting. Don’t love his tape, especially in coverage, but he puts the hurt on people.

Wow, they actually picked a guy that was on my list?!??! Greene is a real need and has tons of potential. Pretty happy with what they did at LB this draft.

Surprised to see Emery go with an almost entirely need-based draft though. That was not anything that was expected based on his short history and comments.

Dysert, Lattimore both might last until the 5th, so fingers crossed.

Really like the Okafor, Greene, and Phillip Thomas picks. Lots of quality players coming off the board. You really played the game the right way if you stockpiled middle round picks this year.

Johnathan Franklin was seriously underrated. Combining him with Lacy is scary good.

I like Franklin more than Lacy, but Franklin coughs up the ball. Briggs will have a field day.

Not sure what’s up with the Packers taking a pair of nobody OTs, guess they have a high priced QB or something. Are the Packers planning on playing any defense at all this year?

ETA: There goes Patton too the Niners, really nice fit for both player and team. The Niners should feel awfully lucky he fell to them. He wasn’t ever worth that 20-35 ranking that most people had on him, but late in the 4th he’s a hell of a pick. Expect solid contributions without many highlight plays, which is probably what that passing game needs.

I didn’t realize Quinton Patton was still available. My blurb says, “Not as fast as one would like, but runs good routes, has soft hands, and decent blocking ability.”

This 4th round has been the hardest as a Steeler’s fan. Not that I’m not happy with the selections - I’m actually really, really pleased - but there’s so many guys I knew they wanted that are being snatched up. Imagine if we traded down in the 2nd for an extra 4th? Guys like Franklin, Boyce, Goodman, Greene, etc.

Also, how the hell is Jesse Williams still available?

Alright, we got Lattimore!
