NFL Draft 2013

Getting into the point of the draft where I don’t know any of these guys. I’ve heard of a few mentioned briefly in various places, but I wonder how many players taken in these last two rounds will end up being contributors. In most drafts, you’re really just looking for depth here and for guys to make the team, but this isn’t a normal draft.

I do wonder why I’m still following along, though.

Chase Thomas?

Hmm, Jordan Mills wasn’t really on my radar, but from NFL.com:

Sounds like a steal and will be great J’Marcus Webb insurance on the right side. I wasn’t thinking about adding a RT, but considering the trouble we’ve had there in the last 3 or 4 years it might be a hell of a good idea. Between Webb, Carimi, Scott and Britton we’re a long, long ways from safe there. I support this pick!

ETA: Brandon Jenkins was a pretty great pick by the Redskins before the Bears.

For the Packers, their starting LT last year was a 5th round pick, their starting ILB last year was a 6th rounder and he was replaced after injury by a quite good until injured backup ILB who was a 6th rounder. It is certainly hit or miss, but these picks do matter.

Because you’re sick. Sick I tells you.

And there goes “my guy” Mike Gillislee to Miami. Good pick.

Kicker run starts!!!

Another fat guy for the D Line. They keep throwing guys at the position, so hopefully one of these guys sticks.

And the Lions go off the board for a punter in the 5th.

The Saints took WR Kenny Stills out of Oklahoma. I think he’s expected to be a kick returner/punt returner at first, maybe eventually developing into a Lance Moore clone.

Raiders take Nick Kasa, who now has a new casa.
<groan>

Boooooooooooo!!!

Thought this was amusing.

5 (173) **Broncos ** (From Eagles through Browns, 49ers and Packers)

Marty Hurney was a notoriously bad drafter, at least after Round 1 (and even then, often.) Gettleman is trying to remake the team and he wants to get bigger on the lines. I’m ok with that. I do wish they addressed the secondary, where they are indeed in serious need of talent and depth. I disagree with the “few offensive weapons” though. Cam Newton, Steve Smith, Greg Olsen, Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, Mike Tolbert. Yeah they could use another WR, but offense wasn’t the pressing need.

Shit, there goes Swope to the Cardinals. The NFC West is stealing all of my guys!

There goes Swope to the Cardinals. Adding to a good draft, damn them.

The Pats used a pick last year or the year before that had been traded eight times (or they might have been the eighth team to hold it).

On that note:

8 (176) **Texans ** (From Titans through Vikings, Cardinals and Raiders)

Wonder if the Texans are looking at a QB here…

Jamoris Slaughter. How did I miss that name?

I forgot my guy Quessenbury. Good pick by the Texans. I got a laugh out of the description of the pick: “Texans (From Titans through Vikings, Cardinals and Raiders)”

Quessenberry there is a total steal for the Texans. San Jose State had a really good year last year, and he was a big part of it.

OK, the first guy I’ve never heard of to the 49ers. Nick Moody, listed as a OLB out of Florida State, he’s got to be a special-teams-only pick. That’s an under-appreciated need for the team.

Now THAT pick I don’t understand by the Panthers. Ugh.

What did the Browns do to get lumped into this category? They couldn’t do as much without a second rounder, but if you consider Josh Gordon their second rounder it was a really great use of it. If you dumped him in the draft this year knowing how productive he was even on a horrible offense in his first year he’d be a mid first round pick at worst, possibly taken before Tavon Austin.

Otherwise they got someone most people thought was a top 10-12 guy in the top 10, and a decent CB prospect which was a big need in the third. I’m not sure where the big “ha ha, dumb Browns” comes from based on this.
