Seriously though…do you really think the Browns are going to take a QB with their first pick a year after taking Wheeden?
ETA: and now Mayock’s board has us taking Reid, the FS from LSU. I’d much rather that than a RB at 21, and its more of a need. Chris Crocker is 57 years old.
I don’t think the fact that they took Weeden in the first last year matters. New regime from top to bottom, they have no loyalty to the people already on the team. And I’d be fine with taking a quarterback two years in a row if it were a good option. Quarterback is so important in the NFL that you should continually invest in one until it looks like you found your guy.
That said, the options at QB in the draft so. Next year is a much better class. It would be kind of a waste of a pick this year. And I’m hoping that Chud and Norv could do a lot to suit an offense to Weeden’s capabilities than Shurmur did, so I think he’ll have a solid enough year.
Apparently they are adding ex-Miami Dolphin Davone Bess to their weak WR crew, so that might help. And if it cheers you up at all, you can sit there Friday night and when the second round pick comes up, you can stare longingly into a picture of Josh Gordon.
Anyway, I think I’m still locked into pre-rookie wage scale thinking. I keep forgetting that first round QB’s aren’t as expensive as they were only two years ago. So in that light I suppose it makes more sense. Having watched Weeden play a couple times last season I did not get the impression that he was terrible, just that his talent at WR was.The Browns have a decent o-line and a top-notch RB. If they just developed more talent at WR their offense would be in pretty good shape, IMO.
USA Today had an idea I really like for the Packers. Trading the 25th pick to the Bills who would it to snag Nassib. The Packers would move to the Bills second round pick, at 41 and something else of course (according to the value calculators the 41 and 73 would e approximately equal value for the 25) . The Packers could possible snag Eddie Lacy there. I am not necessarily a huge fan of selecting a running back in the top 50, however, given I have seen some mock drafts have the Packers getting him at 25 I would prefer to move down to get him.
Josh Gordon assuming he stayed in school and put up good stats would probably be the #1 receiver in the draft this year, probably a middle of the first round guy. Josh Gordon was a steal for a 2nd round pick a year in the future.
I think in looking at this draft, I’m going to pretend there were 10 imaginary draft picks before the first pick. That way, Joeckel or Fisher at #11 makes a lot more sense. Milliner at #16 is better, and the high upside Dion Jordan/Ziggy Ansah/KeKe Mingo all make more sense at 13-20. I know that there is going to be some elite talent in this draft, but I don’t think there’s much greatness in the top of the first round.
Not possible. Not a single one of those guys has a starting job. There’s going to be at least one starter out of this crop. I’m expecting big (or at least moderate things) from Landry Jones - remember him?
I’m going to try and break out my Love/Hate for the Bears in the 1st round tonight before the draft, but one of the core principles if that Chance Warmack sucks and Cooper is a far better prospect. Neither is likely to be available for the Bears, but I’ll be surprised if Warmack goes before Cooper and it’s not close based on the video I’ve watched, which is a lot.
He’s on my “my guy” list in the fourth round. He’s kinda like a safety school when picking a college. Yes, I’d love to go to Harvard or Stanford, but I’ll also apply to University of Iowa just in case. Yes, I’d love Matt Barkley or Geno Smith in the late second round, but if not, I’ll take Landry in the fourth.
My fearless prediction for the 49ers: they trade a 1st, 2nd and 3rd (31, 34, 74) to the Jets for the 9th overall. They select Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah.
Other possibilities:
Same trade as above, but take Tayvon Austin, WR, West Virginia.
Trade 31 and 34 to the Jets for 13th pick and take Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri.
Trade 31 and 74 to the Bears for the 20th pick and take either Datone Jones, DT, UCLA, or Jonathan Cyprien, S, FIU.
Stand pat at the 31 spot and pick D.Jones, J.Cyprien, or DJ Hayden, CB, Houston if any of them fall.
I figure the Bears, not having a Third this year, would be a willing trade partner. A question, though, the 49ers two 2nd Rounders “point” value is about the same as 20, would you take those instead?
