The Falcons draft gets even more ridiculous to me. They trade down 107 spots (from 79 to 186) in order to move up 8 spots to grab the 6th best (consenus) DT, while 2nd through 5th were still available, including potential 1st rounder Jer’Zhan Newton.
Wow, 4 of my favorites in the first 5 picks. Someone must be reading my posts. I admit that Polk and Orhorhoro I thought were more 75-125 pick range guys.
Can’t be too angry, because the Packers went with the consensus #1 LB at roughly his value. I’m cautiously optimistic, and hopeful those 5th and 6th round picks will result in some solid competition.
Don’t know much about the Yale OT the Bears grabbed but he’s huge and he’s from Hinsdale. Seems like every team was grabbing OLs in the 3rd round so definitely the middle of a run there. I saw at least one place that had a 2nd round grade on him so he’s clearly the greatest steal of the draft.
Seattle makes a trade in the fourth round and ends up getting a bunch of later round picks without giving up much of anything. Seeing them do that kind of thing lets me know that I haven’t fallen into a parallel universe.
I’m happy with the Giants picks if you assume they have a QB that’s worth a damn. Nabers will be a superstar. Two really good picks in the secondary. Theo Johnson looks like he could be a stud. All for nothing if Jones can’t stay healthy and stop turning it over. They did get him help in free agency so hopefully he isn’t running for his life every play.
FSU’s draft has stalled completely. Johnny Wilson went today in the 6th to the Eagles. Jordan Travis went to the Jets (ugh). But FSU still has the top-rated undrafted DT in Fabian Lovett and the 2nd best undrafted TE in Jaheim Bell on the board.
Wonder what teams know about Lovett. A lot of lower-rated DTs have gone without him getting picked.
From what I read he’s a bit slow and lacks lower body strength and explosiveness. His strength is all upper body, which is formidable, but he’s really unpolished. He might be seen as too much of a project despite his talent. He could go undrafted but I’m sure somebody will pick him up at least on a practice squad to develop him.
Thanks for that. I can see the analysis. He was great on the run, not so good on QB pressure (although when you’re playing with Verse, if you don’ get there quick, he’s already there). As for Jaheim, it just seems like TEs are not a desired commodity in this draft. Nobody below him on the TE chart has been taken either.
A little surprised Jordan Travis went in the 5th. I had him as a UDFA until teams saw how the rehab was going. That was an absolutely brutal injury.
And we’re into the last round…Mr. Irrelevant coming up!
I always wonder at this point, if in some of the draft rooms, the bigwigs have all left and some new guy is just told, “Pick whoever you want”. Or they have a little mini-board and somebody throws a dart.
