OK, I give up. Looking at draft boards I keep seeing “OC”. Just tell me what it is so I can relax and savor the rest of my deep well of ignorance.
Never mind, just found out it’s Offensice Center. I guess what confused me was that I had never heard of a Defensive Center. Real men call that position Nose Tackle.
Sorry.
Offensive Center. No idea why it’s OC instead of just C. OT, OG, OC…consistent anyways.
It’s a hot television show that caters to teenaged television addicts. What it has to do with the draft, I have no idea.
BTW, I hadn’t heard of Mangold before today, guess OL isn’t a position I follow much. Anyone able to make a pull-it-out-of-your-arse comparison to Frank Winters?
Even if he’s got 60% of Winters’ talent and skill, I’d have to think that would be to Favre equivalent to a free lifetime paycheck.
That Cromartie pick is insane with Jimmy Williams still on the board. Wonder if San Diego is tempted by the possibility of turning him into a WR is the CB skills don’t pan out. He speed is awfully temping I guess. All in all, crappy pick with the value still there. Especially Justice and Williams.
And the Chiefs proceed to totally butcher the round by taking Hali who’s slide down the charts has been comical. The certainly need an End and Hali is the best available, but I’d have to guess one of those DBs are a better value and a more sure thing.
Additionally there are local reports that the Bears are high on Richard Marshall out of Fresno State. He might be good and the Bears have a skill for finding small school players who excel, but if they take him with the first overall pick it’s going to be a disaster. He’ll probably be available in the second round, and they should grab a WR if they can with the first and either Marshall or Pope in the second, whoever is still there.
The one that’s called The Ohio State University.
Not Miami University or Ohio University. The school that had A.J. Hawk, Donte Whitner and Bobby Carpenter picked already, and might have Santonio holmes, Nick Mangold and Ashton Youboty go in the 1st round as well. Miami of Ohio as it is sometimes refered to, hasn’t had a great pick since Ben Rothlisberger two years ago.
True. Some sources are saying that OSU might be ranked #1 in the preseason. OSU always seems to have a good amount of players go early in the draft.
Incidentally, the Buckeye basketball team has the #1 recruiting team next year, so we got that going for us too.
WAG: Mangold to SF.
They’re about the same size, but Winters is, after 15+ years, a lot more refined to NFL play. Mangold may have problems with the oversized nose tackles, but he’s quicker and more of a Olin Kreutz type of nasty player.
Shhhh. I’d love to have Justice fall to the Pack. Put Tausher on the interior, leave Clifton on the left side, and groom Justice for the future. Look for the Pats to take Maroney
The more I’m reading about Mangold, the more I want him snapping the ball in Lambeau. Of course, what I’m reading could very well be a sales pitch, but the salesman is pretty good and making a lot of sense right now. Plus this is just a knee-jerk snap judgement.
And as a side note, I’m not going to be happy until Winters is the OL coach. LeRoy Butler is doing pretty well in his job and can’t see why Winters wouldn’t be just as effective.
Mangold is one of the best Center prospects to enter the draft in recent years. I don’t know Winters very well, but most assume that Mangold will turn out to be a perennial Pro Bowler. Possibly a Hutchinson-esque non-OT stud on the line. He’d be a formidable addition to any playoff team.
Looking forward again:
New England - Seems like the most valuable player on the board here is Justice. Jackson has the WOW factor but that’s not usually Belichick’s MO. Neither would shock me, nor would a trade at this spot. Walker maybe? I’m going to stick with my gut and say what I said earlier, the Pats take Maroney to replace Dillon.
San Fransisco - Hmm. If New England doesn’t take Justice they will take him here. Jackson would be hot, but they already added a pass catcher in Davis and they need to protect Smith. The pick, Justice.
…as I type this they announce the Pats taking Maroney, glad to see Jackson continue to slide…
Well, it looks like the Pats decided that Maroney projected much more as an every-down kind of guy than Williams, and that Jackson wasn’t worth it when they’ve been so good at getting WR value in the lower rounds for the past few years. I am fine with this pick… I hope to see the Pats use their ridiculous number of picks to shift around and target some other guys in the next couple of rounds. We’ll see how things go.
Manny Lawson? Not a bad pick. And I’m almost willing to take a bet that he makes more an impact than Williams. It’s always the guy overshadowed in college that turns out to be the better player in the NFL, it seems.
Is anyone else dreading the end of the second round? I say we petition a change so the draft starts and ends with no break. None of this 2 day crap. Make everyone stay up for 72 hours. They’ve had since February to work this stuff out (re: trades, etc).
Plus, you get teams that don’t sleep for 3 days and the last round could be more entertaining than anything you could buy a ticket to.
This one I just don’t understand. Maroney was a good back, but NE could have gotten him later if he was their guy going into this. He’ll be really good in the NFL, but I don’t see him as being elite.
Damn, there goes Davin Joseph. Well, the Pack can still hope Justice, Mangold, or DeAngelo Williams continue to fall.
Picks are coming too fast and the SDMB is too slow for me to keep up!
SF taking Lawson is a surprise. They certainly need the help at LB and he’s the last of the top tier guys. It’s a logical pick. Justice’s personal issues must be killing him, either that or he’s not reputed to be that much better than McNeil or Winston.
Looking forward again:
Tampa Bay - Justice is making me look like a fool! How many times can I predict he’ll go only to see him slide again? Honestly this is a good thing, I think the Bucs would have taken Jackson, but they have a greater need on the OL. Justice finally goes here.
Cincy - If the Bucs pass on Justice, the Bengals absolutely take him to protect Palmer after that injury last year. Both these teams have young offenses that would thrive if Justice lives up to the hype. Since I think he’ll be gone I’m going a different direction and projecting defense. They need a pass rush and DB help. Jimmy Williams is a great value here but I’m going to go off chalk and suggest Mathias Kiwanuka as the pick!
NY Giants - As I mentioned earlier this team baffles me. I’m guessing they avoid LB and take Jimmy Williams finally to help their secondary. Ellis D pointed out a need at DT but there’s just nobody there.
…while typing Tampa baffles me by taking a different OL. Guard Davin Jospeh. I know nothing about this guy…
Chicago - Wow, some great players will on the board that shouldn’t be! They take Jackson here. No brainer. Anything else and they are the laughing stock of the league. Holmes might be a better fit due to his return skills, but Jackson has so much upside and could replace Moose as the big, fast #1 WR.
I give up! Justice might go undrafted. I’m not sure what the deal is. I watched his tape and the guy totally owned the line of scrimmage and paved the way for Bush and LenDale White.
It’s a complete mystery what these teams are thinking. As it is he might fall all the way to Texas with the first pick in the 2nd round. Damn.
I’m liking the Bears chances at getting a superior CB in the second round, so long as they don’t do anything stupid…
Well, they’ll be great until they get to the Bears…
There is a lot of talent that seems to be falling, which makes me believe there may be a few trades brewing. Of course, the opposite may be true, where teams think they may be able to wait to get the guy they want. I love the draft!!!
