I’m hoping NY offers the house. Either that late first rounder or one of the early second rounders could be used to deal for Walker assuming Stallworth isn’t involved.
I could also see the Packers and 49ers making offers for the pick. The problem with the 49ers is that the 6th pick would probably put us out of reach of either Hawk or Brick unless the Jets are lying about the lack of interest in the QB’s. Vernon Davis is going to be a beast at TE, but Zack Hilton really came on late last year. Can’t say I would mind it though, as I think Davis is the second surest thing in this draft behind Hawk.
The Saints just can’t be giving big money to a pair of RB’s, and I don’t think we’d get much for Deuce with his huge contract and injury problems. But I will say that many of us are thrilled about this.
Now it’s getting exciting. T minus 15 hours or so and counting…
By the by, I think the Texans are idiots for 1) Passing on Bush 2) Not getting anything for passing on Bush. Dominant pass rushers may, by and large, be more valuable than average running backs, but Mario Williams is not dominant, and Reggie Bush is not average.
The logic is that dominant pass rushers are more valuable than dominant running backs. Average pass rushers are paid better and are rarer than dominant running backs. Great DEs careers last 15+ seasons, great RBs rarely extend past 10.
Of course all of this presumes that you believe Mario Williams is the next Reggie White. If he is, he’s more valuable than Bush even if he is the second coming of Marshall Faulk.
Pitt. media reporting today that the Steelers are looking to move up in the 2nd round…they have 10 total picks this year (1,2,3, and 3 in the 4th), so I see maybe their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th to make a big jump in the second. Rumor is to get both Lendale White at 32 and Bing or Simpson early in 2nd rd.
Also rumor that Pitt. is looking to deal up into Chicagos spot in Rd1, as Chicago is looking to trade out of it(Chi. is returning all 22 starters)
I really don’t see where you’re coming from here. 60 TFLs is pretty dominant, and screw average running backs; dominant pass rushers are worth more than anything but elite quarterbacks in the NFL right this minute. If the evaluation is that Mario Williams grades out as well as Bush does (I don’t think he’s quite a Freeney myself, but he’s definitely a playmaker), I don’t see that it’s unreasonable to expect that he will help the Texans win more games than Bush would,
There are question marks on Williams. They’ve already been talked about and I don’t know if he is the answer at defensive end. I do believe he is the best prospect out there, so, depending on what you think of the other DE propsects, have at it. I’ll echo the “not dominant” label. He got th elions’ share of his sacks in 4 games last year. His draft position will be determined by potential, much like an NBA pick. If someone thinks his skill set will make him a mini-Peppers, then he’s going very high. If someone thinks he’s going to be Kameer Gbaja Biamila, who needs someone on the other side of him to get the attention off him, then he slides (how far he slides is discussed in the next paragraph).
I’m not sold on this entire D’Brickashaw Ferguson thing, either. His resume looks like an above-average offensive tackle, not a franchise guy like Jonathan Ogden, Tony Boselli, or Larry Allen. Even with that said, Ferguson is the correct pick for the Texans. They need to swap with the Jets, who will be happy to pay whatever ransom is offered for a few reasons. Number one: last year, the Giants (that’s the OTHER New York team) paid a metric shit ton (and overpaid) for Eli Manning. The Jets are down and want to make the front page. Mark my words. They’re trading up, no questions asked. The Texans get at LEAST two picks (both of the Jets’ first rounders) and get the offensive tackle they wanted at number 4. He’ll still be there. The hype machine needs to be fired up again concerning Matt Leinart, Vince Young, and Mario Williams. Those three, along with Reggie Bush, will fill up the top three long enough for the Texans.
Unfortunately, I see spin and hype driving the first pick overall. It’s going to be Reggie Bush.
Capa84, it may be too late for you to get a hold of this question and answer it, but what would the Steelers want at the Bears’ position?
I’m getting giddy. It’s like Christmas for me. I don’t even know WHAT I want for a present this year, either. All I know is that I better love it. my heart is set on a cutler of perhaps a huff. either one to spite Osip

Agreed, although it was two years ago. (Way back when Kurt Warner was on the team.)
The details of that trade, from memory, were: Giants give the #4 overall and their 3rd rounder, plus next year’s 1st and 5th round picks, in exchange for the #1 overall. That’s quite a bit to move up three spots, and unfortunately for the Jets set quite the precedent.
But here in the tri-state area, it is simply amazing how far down the ladder the Jets fell so quickly. After the Giants went 4-12, earning their #4 overall pick, the Giants were nowhere near as much of the pariah that the Jets currently are, and in that time the Jets were winning playoff games, as opposed to getting humiliated in them like the Giants did last year.
The Jets are in desperate need of a big splash, and have nobody to compete for ink with the likes of Eli, Shockey, Tiki, or Strahan, soon to be joined by the likes of Osi. Hell, let’s be honest; the Jets have nobody to rival the ink of Brandon Jacobs. They desperately need to wrest some respect out of the area.
Reggie Bush would do just that. IIRC, the Jets have 7 picks in the first day. That’s plenty. Offering the same trade as the Giants would mean giving up one of their third rounders this year and next year’s first and fifth. IMO, with the benefit of hindsight and free agency, Eli was well worth it.
Would Bush be? Well, as unapologetic Jets fan Mike Greenberg opined, “watching the end of that Giants Broncos game, with Eli leading the team to that amazing last second win, I’m off the Bush bandwagon and officially want Leinart, because in crunch time it’s all about your QB. A RB is an afterthought.”
And he’s absolutely right about that. But it doesn’t matter. Who else are the Jets going to get to move them off the back page and start getting some fan respect? This draft is deep with defensive guys, and the Jets are deep with first day picks. The last thing they need is yet another limp-armed Pennington clone, and they have much bigger issues than QB anyway.
It’s a no-brainer, IMO. The Jets should trade up.
P.S: I cracked up logging in to see the green dots in this thread lit up like a Christmas tree. No surprise that all us NFL fans are online right now. My only worry is that I must fall asleep by dawn so I will be awake to see the draft.
P.P.S: And my fantasy team is unattainable if the Jets take Bush, unless Bush falls to the very end of the second round. Doh! Hey, how’s about everybody lets him fall to the 6th so I can pick him up as a keeper? hehheh.
Well, yeah. Many green lights on this time of night. The SDMB is running slow as a motherfucker right now, too.

it is, right?
Michael Irvin is shouting about the badness of this pick on ESPN. He said Bush could run for 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons and that Houston should have considered how excited their fans would have been about a Bush selection. The volume is only making it easier to hear that he’s saying silly things.
At the moment, for whatever it’s worth, it doesn’t sound like New Orleans is doing anything except taking Bush.
I think Houston screwed up only because if you’re going to pass on Bush, you make sure that YOU’RE the one making the trade with the Jets and picking up a bunch of extra picks, and then you take Ferguson with the 4th pick to help out an offensive line desperately in need.
I actually think passing on Bush was the right thing for that franchise… but not in the manner which they did it.
I just have to point out this link. GB taking Davis and Hawk falling 3 more spots to play in Buffalo? GB not taking Hawk over Davis?
Anyone can earn a paycheck in sports reporting, I guess.
(I’ve now guaranteed Davis being the pick for posting this. But I’m still thinking Bush is ours.)
Screw it. My previous posts seemed wild when everyone thought Williams was going to the Pack, Bush to Houston, Brick to NO, Young to TN, etc. I have nothing to lose in the credibility department in guessing what the hell is going to happen in 9 hours. (Holy crap, it’s 2am and I still have to hit 4 other sites for draft news before sleep.)
Going out on a limb here. Green Bay takes Bush, Leinart or Hawk. One way or the other.
And in my delerium of draft time, I forgot the wildest scenario I’ve posted yet. Green Bay wants Williams or Bush, so they trade Favre after drafting whoever Houston wants in the Eli-draft-me-wherever-I’m-playing-in-New-York debacle, and everyone wins.
Sure, you scoff. But it happened last year.
OK, Favre ain’t going anywhere. I really need some rest.
But if it does happen, I’m going to list my death on e-bay and Dopers will get a 20% discount to make it happen.
Jesus I take this stuff too seriously. I’m passing all the logical arguments (well, mostly, Davis over Hawk?), and making up my own stuff.
Any chance of packaging Carroll somehow? Even if only to get a check to pay the light bill for home games at Lambeau?
