NFL - Week 1

No website yet, OMNI , we’re hoping that next year we’ll have a site up to run fantasy leagues, offer fantasy advice, and offer betting advice. Problem is, there’s a lot of competition so we’ll probably have to offer the service free (or dang close) for the first year to get some interest and hopefully loyalty. Which means I’ll either have to win the lottery or keep my day job. Which, in turn, means I can’t put in as much time as would be needed…

Just got done with draft #6 (and last) of the fantasy season. Tough one, 7 player keeper league that I took over an existing team that wasn’t so good. Plus, it’s the only one with individual defensive players. Now it’s time to test my league management software for the 3 leagues I commish. We’re still a long way from going live, I’m afraid.

On to some picks:

SF at NYG People are caling this a SF blow-out. I don’t think so. I see a big game yardage wise for Collins and Toomer, not so much for Garcia and Owens. SF pulls it out in the end though, 16-13.

NYJ at BUF I like the Bills offense this year, and Abraham will be a little slowed by the knee injury, so I’ll go with BUF, 24-22.

BAL at CAR Rodney Peete? Rodney Peete!!?? BAL, 20-3.

MIN at CHI Minnesota can’t stop the run. Chicago will be happy to take advantage. A-Train all day. CHI, 24-17.

SD at CIN Tomlinson will get off to a nice start. Brees, not so much. Weren’t these teams each 3-0 when they faced off last year? I’ll go with SD, 20-17.

KC at CLE No Couch, but Kelly’s looked good in pre-season. CLE is a turnover causing machine and Trent Green doesn’t require much enticement to throw it to the other team. CLE wins in a an ugly game, 17-16.

ATL at GB Boys, you are about to see the best defense in the NFL. The Pack will be phenomenal on the defensive side of the ball, and very good to great on the offensive side. GB 31-13.

IND at JAX I really have no clue on this game. Questions marks abound. I’ll let the beagle pick it…JAX (he can’t pick a score).

DET at MIA Remember this name - Adewale Ogunleye - your 2002 sack leader. MIA, 24-6.

PHI at TEN Another toughie. I like getting points with a team like PHI, but TEN is tough at home, Vincent is hurt, and George looks good again. I’ll take the points and say TEN, 21-20.

AZ at WAS Steve Superior is an enigma. Was he playing with us in the pre-season and he’ll let Davis carry the rock in the regular season? I’ll pick based on what will be a tough 'skin defense…WAS, 20-13.

STL at DEN Do you realize that the last time the Rams were an underdog was in 1999? I have a strange feeling about the STL boys this year and I think DEN is a dangerous place for them to start the season. DEN 31-28.

SEA at OAK Okay, Hasselbeck had a QB rating of like 2.6 in one of the pre-season games. I can’t believe I’m sayig this, but this team needs Dilfer…OAK, 24-13

NO at TB I’m not convinced in McCallister, and I think he’ll struggle on grass against a still stout TB defense. Gruden’s offense fits perfectly to Brad Johnson’s game. (Look at what he did for Gannon)…TB, 27-17

DAL at HOU First game, new stadium, in-state rival…First loss. DAL, 24-6.

PIT at NE I don’t see NE geting two non-offensive TD’s this time. Randle-El is just exciting to watch. PIT, 20-13.

SURVIVOR: BAL
LOSER: NYG (Hey, I used them in our local loser pool…)

OMNI: DAL, MIA, GB, OAK, BAL

And, just 'cause I like the new smilie…:smack:

To win: Eagles, Bills, 'Skins, Ravens, Bears, Bungles, Browns, Pack, Indy, Miami, Broncs, Raiders, Bucs, Cowboys, Pats.

Omni: Eagles, 'Skins, Ravens, Bears, Broncs.

Well, I just realized that because the Bengals can’t even sell out their home opener that I won’t see any of the 1 pm games. Normally I would just go spend the afternoon at a Sports bar but I really do need to take my daughter to her soccer game and I actually have a lot of work to do. At least I plan to catch the second half of the Saints v Bucs and maybe bits of the Sunday night game, plus the game tomorrow night which should be interesting.

So how is Dwayne Rudd feeling right about now?

Apparently the answer to the RAMS is to run a cover-2 zone. Tampa almost beat them with it a couple of years ago in the NFC championship, and Denver is shutting them down…of course, you need your offense to play well too.

The Browns-Chiefs game – bad break for “The Freak”.

Marty Booker was a house of fire, and Jim Miller just owned the Vikes defense in that game-winning comeback drive. I commend the Bears for putting out the hopes of the Vikings and their “I play when I want to play” receiver, Randy Moss.

There were more than a couple bizarre finishes this week. Could be the gaffe of the year by Rudd (sp?) in Cleveland. Not often you see a team lose with no time left because a guy took off his helmet. And what the hell was Tom Tupa doing taking his sweet time to punt in the endzone (Saints v Bucs). Not to mention a lot of high fantasy draft players making their owners tear their hair out: Terrell Owens, Torry Holt, Curt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Anthony Thomas, Ahman Green, Curtis Martin, Corey Dillon, etc.

From News of the Weird:

Is there any hope whatsoever for Lions fans? Or more realistically, how long will this take to fix?

I’d better let my 7y/o pick the games next. Through Sunday, I’ve only called two games perfectly. Hey Shib what happens on a PUSH?

If you were really betting then no one wins or loses. I don’t really bet so I don’t know if the house keeps the vig (maybe 10%) or if you’d get all of your money back.

Stange strange week! Isn’t week 1 usually that way somehow? Remember Carolina-Minnesota last year?

My picks were for shit. Went 1-4 in my pick 5, and if anyone was curious I dumped the San Diego game in place of the Baltimore one…yes, I know…

One bragging point is my read on the home team, Bears-Queens. Miller had time, good guys win. Was about perfect for me, got fantasy points out of Moss, yet the good guys won in exciting fashion.

In a quick scan over the commentary I feel pretty happy with my evaluations, just not the outcomes.

Knew that Philly-Tenn, Jax-Indy, TB-NO, StL-Den and Jets-Bills could go either way (not exactly a stretch, I know). Knew that Balt-Carolina would be ugly (big shock), expected the fun-and-gun to work in the NFL. I’d have to say I damn near scripted the San Diego outcome. I might be the only person who saw the holes in the GB defense, Gazoo even said they’d be the best (snicker).

I’m only embarassed about one game, and thats the Dallas one. Thankfully, I’m one of many. I think I was sucked in after watching Hard Knocks. Last season I was real hard on the Boys offense, and they did basialy nothing to improve it radiacally. However all the optomism that the Cowboys coaches had in the O on HBO lured me in. I feel so used. Carter couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. The Houston D is decent for an expansion team, but I’m telling you right now that it was much more a result of how bad Carter was than how good the DBs played.

Lets see how Monday goes.

If anyone is curious, there are 30 teams in my Pick 5 pool, and only one has a shot at going 4-1 going into Monday night. Most players were 2-3, and as a whole we’re going to be substantially below .500. Needless to say everyone is out, and the pot rolls over.

Hey, you must have had my half of the brain when I made that comment. Seriously, I think the GB breakdown was as much as factor of not knowing what to do with Michael Vick (or is it now Mike Vick? Shouldn’t they come out with a press release when this stuff changes? Jay Williams pulled this same sh!t on me…) Luckily I have Mr. Vick in my keeper league.

GB’s defense will do much better when they’re not trying to figure out if they should be on their heels or charging forward, and the Pack actually lucked out with Kelly and Finneran both dropping sure TDs that were right in their hands.

Survived our pick three losers pool, taking NYG, ATL, and SEA.

Gee, did anyone here pick the Pats?! Maybe, finally, they will get some respect. The Steelers looked really hungry for revenge out there. Too bad they sucked.

Just for the record, the house does not keep the 10% (juice or vig) on a push.

See above.

Upon review, I did see several picks for the Pats. I withdraw that objection. Still, it seems like the press still hasn’t accepted that they are a good team.

Thanks to the Pats, I went a whopping  8-7 in my picks. (Along with many of the group here, I was a little late for calling the 49ers-Giants.) Would’ve been 9-6 if that guy hadn’t thrown his helmet.

Would’ve also been 9-6 if the Cowboys had beaten the Texans, but I didn’t mind that in the least.

I picked the Steelers here, but had a change of heart on Saturday when I did the SDMB Pick’Em league for Yahoo! Fortunately I also flip-flopped on KC. Usually when I change my mind I am wrong. In this case I think I went 10-5 in SDMB Pick’Em (I didn’t get on in time to pick SF over NYG or it would have been 11-5 straight up). I’ll recap everybody’s picks in here tomorrow, after Fall 1901 Diplomacy 1040.
