NFL WEEK 10 Things I Hate About You

Another quiet week in the NFL. Most of the news is injury related, with Mahomes practicing for the first time, Cam Newton going on IR (it will be interesting to see what they do with him), and AJ Green may finally return. The rest is pretty standard. Oh, and the Bengals still suck.

There are a lot of interesting games this week. The Chargers/Raiders, Lions/Bears, Chiefs/Titans are all pretty evenly matched teams and each game has the potential of starting/continuing a turn around (Chargers), stopping a slide (Bears), or revving up the engine (Chiefs). They should be good viewing.

The marquee games, to me at least, are the last two. The Vikings and Cowboys are two of the top teams in the NFC and quite similar with pretty good defenses, amazing running games, and inconsistent QB play. It will be interesting to see if Kirk or Dak rise to the occasion, as both teams are in the hunt for the top of their respective divisions.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks go to San Fran to face off. That Niners defense is astoundingly good, and Russell Wilson is in the MVP discussion. The Niners pass rush versus his scrambling should be great fun to watch. Meanwhile, I’ll get another look at Jimmy G, who impressed me last week, but I’m still wondering if he’s legit good. Throw in Richard Sherman going against Seattle and it should be a fun watch.

One thing that did catch my eye is some of the lines on the games. The 2-6 Browns are favorites against the 6-2 (3-0 on the road) Bills is shocking to me, and I wish I still had a bookie. (As an aside, I’d love to see that Bills team with either a decent passing QB or a Ravens type running offense rather than Josh Allen). And the lowly Bears getting the home game bump, are a favorite against the Lions. I’d also like the Vikings to get points against the Cowboys. Lots of action I like this week. Too bad Missouri is still debating whether to allow sports betting.

Anyone else want to chime in? Let me know what you think.

P.S.: It’s a really great movie by the way.

To me tonight’s game is of interest only because it’s a division rivalry game (not to mention rumors that the Chargers will someday be moving to London[?!?]). I, too, am surprised to see that the Browns are favored this week. AZ at TB matches Bruce Arians’ current team with his old one (one week after his current team took the Seahawks to O.T. in Seattle). I’m forced to pull for the Steelers this week (yuck). Go Packers! Go Vikings! And, of course, Go Seahawks (though, in truth, I think they’re in for a REAL challenge next Monday)!

I’m not counting on the Seahawks to win but there are a couple of things to consider…

 1. They usually get better through the year.

 2. As weak as their schedule has been up until now, San Francisco has had a weaker one. I think at this point you’re a fool if you think the 49ers aren’t legitimately good, but being unbeaten doesn’t mean unbeatable.

 3. It takes place in Santa Clara and due to some strange cosmic alignment or magic spell or whatever, Seattle is a great road team for the first time in forever and haven’t been beaten in any away games. Plus it’s not like San Francisco has some great home field advantage, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an even number of Seattle fans in the crowd, or even a majority.

I still would put money on San Francisco but I’m guessing either way it will be close.

You lost me, Hamlet. What movie are you talking about?

10 Things I Hate About You

RIP Mr. Ledger. :frowning:

If a team other than Seattle wins the N.F.C. West I’d rather it be the 49ers (or even the Cardinals). As long as the Rams DON’T win the division (or even make the playoffs), I’ll be happy.

I’m not a Chargers fan but I’ve been hoping Rivers would win a title. Unfortunately, his window’s closing fast.

Way too many penalties (not unwarranted for the most part), but a very exciting game nonetheless. Can Rivers get it done? I’m guessing no.

Just as I post that, a ticky tack defensive holding call costs the Raiders.

Criminally underrated movie.

Wow. I saw last night that the Raiders went 49 days between games in Oakland (there was a “home” game for them in London during that stretch) and on the T.V. it stated that that was a team record. Team record? Sheesh - I would’ve thought that’s a league record! Then I saw online a few moments ago that Tampa Bay also went (or is still going) without a home game for 7 straight weeks. If those aren’t league records I wonder what the record is for the longest stretch between home games for an N.F.L. team?

Maybe not technically a stretch without a home game, but the Saints went a full season without having a game in New Orleans after Katrina (they did play “home” games in San Antonio and Baton Rouge as I recall).

I think every team ‘might’ be moving to London. We can discuss in the off season why a London team will never happen, but London is definitely the new LA

Well, the Packers are very unlikely to move to London (unless you mean New London, WI)

Brian

I went 1-6 in pick’em this morning. I suspect I’m not alone.

Bengals. The Bengals are moving to London. They are going to tweak the name to make it more “American” : the London Bellhops. This also serves to slow the rate at which actual Bengal tigers are going extinct, with fewer of them then dying of shame and embarrassment.

Less said about my football picking year, the better. 538’s contest is crushing my will to live. I’ve never been so bad at picking games as I am this year.

Saints, 13 pt favorites, at home, lose by 17. I mean, WTF? The Pats look like the only championship quality team in the League. Which means they’ll lose their first playoff game by 20.

The Patriots looked so good in the first half because they played exclusively terrible teams. We’ll see how they hold up against actual winning-record teams.

The KC/Tennessee game was brutal. Weird call on 3rd and 2, and Mahommes gun-shy on running it leads into botched field goal PLUS an intentional grounding penalty when the holder threw the ball away. Ugh.

I had a feeling it would be a week of upset, and I picked many more than usual. Unfortunately, I didn’t pick many of the right ones…

We lost to the Dolphins. The Dolphins.
