NFL week 14

And there it is! We’re up to 128 straight games where the announcers point out on replay a) the flag the Eagles’ opponent earned but wasn’t called (on offense and defense), and b) the flag the Eagles got and didn’t deserve. It’s super fun to see every week. A streak to rival DiMaggio and Ripken, surely.

Extra special bonus for yet another 30+ yard TD getting called back on penalty. That one was at least legit. That’s a rare comfort. Not a fun season, even if it is exactly the outcome people expected before week 1.

The Eagles All-Pro long snapper (you might recognize him from America’s Got Talent) got hurt, and the backup long snapper also got hurt (after botching a snap on a field goal). So the team is actually, literally, holding tryouts on the sideline to find anyone who can handle a snap. They’ve gone through four different players I’ve seen. Fans are next, I’m sure.

As I type that, Jamison Crowder made a catch, turned around with two feet on the ground, took two short steps, got hit, and fumbled as he hit the ground. They called it incomplete (it was later overturned to complete). The catch rules are a complete disaster. That should have never needed to be challenged.

I got to watch that game for a bit today. It was a fun, exciting game (probably because I wasn’t too invested), and I was rooting for the Eagles because their win would be better for the Packers and because I hate Dan Snyder (although I love me some Kirk Cousins).

I was a bit suprised by the sheer amount of smoke blown up Carson Wentz’s ass by the announcers. He makes a simple 2 yard quick out throw, and they’re praising his accuracy, and seemingly ignoring his throws behind receivers, the red zone pick, and the fumble to end the game. I may have to watch with the volume off next time.

After starting 4-4 my Lion’s are on a 5 game win streak and leading the Division by two games. Dare I say it? This could be our year!!! *

  • For definitions of “our year” suitable to the Lions. That’s not win the Super Bowl. That’s not even make the Super Bowl for the first time ever. That’s win a playoff game for the first time since a lot of the players were born.

You want a disaster? Check out the OB call in the first quarter of the Titans-Broncos game today. Walker was running for the endzone, stepped near but not on the sideline at the 5, and the only defender near him did everything he could to stop him but could not keep him out of the endzone. But the refs said he stepped out at the 5, and when Mularkey threw the review flag, they said the play could not be reviewed.

Luckily for the sanity of Titan fans, they scored a couple plays later anyway, and a TD rather than a FG was the difference that gave them the win.

Titans now above .500 and tied for the division lead. I always said Donald Trump would be elected President before that would happen.

At least so far in the first half, the Packers look pretty impressive, and Rodgers looks like his old self.

Yeah, both he and the Eagles started well against two of the worst teams in the league and they’ve been overrated ever since. Heck PFF (I think) had them as the best team in the league based on their DVOA rating for most of the season and they were still in the top 5 before this weekend.

Just remember the last time the Packers were ahead of the Seahawks by a bunch :smack:

Yeah, I try to never get too excited, too early.

In the interest of fairness, on the diving red zone interception you cited, you’re ignoring the perfectly placed touchdown he threw the play before in which his receiver couldn’t manage to drag his second foot as every Pop Warner kid learns on day one. Then on the sack at the end in which he fumbled, Wentz’s 4th string right tackle (not an exaggeration) got only a single glancing slap on the defender who sacked Wentz.

Also to be fair, you’ve been a consistent critic of Wentz, regardless of performance, since the Eagles moved up to get him. He was okay today. The transparent provocateur act is getting old, eh?

The Eagles utter demolition of the (now 8-5) Steelers was in week 3. They have played one team with a losing record since week 2, most of those games on the road.

It was Football Outsiders who had them as the best team in the league (FO invented DVOA) because, as was mentioned every single week, the Eagles had by far the best defense and special teams in the league. The whole team has regressed badly lately, but this is surface-level analysis. Do some research, man.

OK, I am now feeling pretty good about the Packers chances of winning

Brian

I’ve made all of three posts about Wentz once the season began, once saying that he was “playing smart and do[ing] a good job of protecting the ball” and once pointing out he struggles when facing pressure. If two posts about him in 14 weeks of regular season football makes me a “transparent provocateur”, I fear you might need a bit thicker skin. And he did play well against Washington. My problem is much more with the hype he was getting, both in this game and others with announcers building him up as some kind of Manning-esque prodigy after 5 good games. He’s a first year QB who, while he is certainly playing better than I expected, has 13 TD’s to 12 INT’s and has a passer rating of 80.1, good for 28th in the league (and better than Blake Bortles, so that’s something).

There was a clip of some Seahawks watching the footie game in Tronneau. They saw Seattle play a total shit game and win the cup, so they figured, hey, maybe we can get away with that in Lambo.

Hey, it’s been a strange year full of unexpected outcomes. I’m putting money on the Lions to win the Super Bowl, as a high-risk high-return bet. It cou’ happen.

I’m not, as they say, a betting man, but I like that bet. Obviously not likely to come through, but given the odds you can probably get it doesn’t have to be likely, just possible.

Saw that one coming. RGIII looked bad. Real bad. There were some drops, but he flat missed a lot of throws.

Don’t worry; 0-16 could still be on the table for a while.

It wasn’t a mistake he spent all of 2015 on the bench. He wasn’t hurt that bad in that preseason game. The 5th-year option thing (they’d owe him $16M for 2016, but only guaranteed if he were injured) was a factor, for sure, but the Redskins would have gladly eaten that salary if he was playing well. But at least at some point during that season they were actually using him on the scout team, and not at QB! Had he gone to pretty much any other team, save for maybe Jacksonville, he may have had a chance to succeed and revive his career, but lately Cleveland is the place players go to die (sorry; I know how that is, that place used to be Washington).

Jeff Fisher got the axe after basically doing the same stuff they just extended him for.

Maybe they were saving him from breaking the all time losing record.

His contract extension was his golden parachute. The Rams suits are just hoping someone else will be stupid enough to hire him and get them off the hook.

Said every NFL QB ever. I’m not taking shots at you personally, and you’re a smart dude because you don’t root for the Bengals like I do, but I remain fascinated that this statement is CONTINUALLY brought up by allegedly smart evaluators of the game, commentators and even former QB’s…every time I hear “Well, QB XYZ played really well because his offensive line protected him” I want to scream. It’s the ultimate “no shit!” statement, right behind “defense wins championships” and “they’ve gotta run the ball better”.

You’d believe there was a multiverse of phases of football listening to some of these guys.
