NFL Week 5 - The Lost Weekend

Is it too early in the season to start calling for Bruce Arians’ head yet? Fuck, and what’s with the 4th quarter prevent defense they’ve fallen in love with. I guess I can throw away my nail clippers if the Steelers end-of-game strategy is going to be like this all year. Tomlin always says the win is what matters, not how you get it. I beg to differ motherfucker, keep blitzing, I can’t take this.

Would you clowns please give it a rest?

What the hell are the Broncos wearing?

I wish I understood the policies on when CBS and Fox can show games. Why exactly am I stuck with only 1 afternoon game to choose from? Who does it benefit for Fox to not be able to show me the OT from the Chiefs-Cowboys?

Why? It’s true.

Do you watch Harrison as plays develop? The offense is always all over him, arms around him, tugging on him, doing everything possible to not let him get near where the action is, and he still nets 8 tackles, 3 sacks, and one forced fumble. The only time they called it today was when one of the Lions was literally on his back, arms wrapped around his neck, as he steamrolled towards the quarterback.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Take this crap back to your little echo chamber please.

Every pass rusher gets “held” on every play. Every WR gets “interfered” with on every pass defense. The guy is outstanding, we get it, he gets held occasionally. Sometimes they are called, sometimes he gets calls that he probably shouldn’t. Oftentimes nothing is called because this is football and there are a lot of judgment calls. Every pass rusher thinks he’s held on every play and in some respects they are probably right, but the refs aren’t instructed to interpret the rules that way. He’s no different, he just gets a lot of TV attention.

You Steelers fans sound like jackasses when you make claims like that.
ETA: Incidentally, a ton of the “no calls” that announcers point out are simply a short pass rusher getting engulfed by a large, tall lineman. It’s not a hold when a 5’9" blitzer gets under a 6’7" tackles pads and drives under his arms. When the tackle wins that battle and drives Harrison to the ground it’s nto a hold unless he’s wrapping him up. Simply pushing him to the ground and falling on top of him is not a hold. 80% of the “no calls” that get whined about are plays like that.

Marvell Smith is the king of uncalled holding.

It’s the uniform from their first season. They were considered almost hysterically ugly in 1960, and, in my case at least, current opinion is the same.

OMFG, the 9ers laid an egg.

Yeah, the 49ers got completely exposed. Can’t wait to hear Singletary’s post-game presser. The look on his face during the 4th quarter was something I’d imagine I’d see on a guy right before he started opening fire in a Burger King.

These Bronco uniforms are 8 layers of fugly, but they’re one of the two teams today who answered some questions. The other was the Bengals–that score was closer than it probably should have been (which can be said about most of their games, actually). I watched most of that game, and their defense was surprisingly good.

And is it just me, or did Josh McDaniels’ post-game celebration make you think “This is why 32-year-olds should not be head coaches”?

I don’t know, I kind of appreciated his enthusiasm. I’m sure the crowd loved it.

You’re not paying attention. Harrison isn’t going to the ground on those calls, he gets under the pad level of the lineman and the NFL has said it is holding when Harrison gets around on the player and the arm is still around his neck. In other words the only reason he can’t make the play his because of the collar, not the position of the LT’s body. That play has not been called and it happens 10-15 times per game. Not every pass rusher can make the same argument; Elvis Dumervil is the only other pass rusher I can think of that this applies to.

Yeah, the crowd loved it, but if you face the Pats again in the playoffs, they’re going to be gunning for revenge even harder than usual. And you do NOT want to go up against Bill Belichick when he’s looking for revenge, especially when he feels like he’s been shown up. The results are not pretty.

I have a hard time really buying this sort of thing. If the Patriots make it to the playoffs, are they really gonna be playing at 90% effort unless there’s some personal insult made to them that makes it worth it to them to give their full effort?

Certainly not, but any team who has ever slighted the Pats and then faced them again later that season knows the difference between just getting beaten by the Patriots and being forced to suffer abject humiliation.

My favorite play this weekend, other than the one in the Falcons game with two separate turnovers, was the Fail Mary at the end of the 1st half of the Ravens-Bengals game. Joe Flacco heaved up a prayer that sailed over the heads of the eight guys bunched together in the end zone and landed out of bounds past the back of the end zone. I laughed for about a minute and a half.

Regarding the Broncos-Patriots

Any one else having deja vu?

I’m wondering if I’m completely biased, but I rewound to see the Taunting call against the Patriot, and I am honestly very sure the flag left the referee’s hand before the Patriots DB even had his hand out to point at the guy hey (legally) took down. Anyone have it on tape to confirm?

I don’t know if “Taunting” is now official NFL-speak for “Screw you Patriots and/or team that isn’t being tongue-washed by the media” or is just NFL-speak for “An official didn’t realize the ball had been tipped and threw the flag for Pass Interference, and we’re just going to pick some other foul rather than having to admit the mistake”

Not tape, but I said the exact same thing when I saw the reply. The flag was well in the air before the Pats guy even began to make a gesture or said a thing. It was the wrong call. I thought it was pretty clear that the ref was thinking either pass interference or, more likely, late hit, and changed his mind after he threw the flag. But the flag, when thrown, wasn’t for taunting. Unless the ref took advantage of a wormhole in the space time continuum.

I thought call was pretty bad too and I didn’t much care who one that game. Maybe they’re trying to atone for kowtowing to Marcia Brady the week before. :stuck_out_tongue:
