NFL Week Five by Five

9-9 going into overtime. Fans are leaving the game.

This is the worst offensive game I’ve seen in years.

It was a good game if you like seeing field goals. There were seven of them.

But mercifully, it’s over, on an incomplete pass, appropriately.

It felt like watching one of the NFL games during COVID lockdowns, without the fake crowd noise.

OK, so in the battle of ‘best AFC West QB’, I think we can take Wilson out of the running? And presumably Carr, although Monday will be telling.

Unreal as a KC fan the number of people who seemed to think Mahomes was going to be the 4th best QB in the division this year. It always seemed clear to me that it was basically a pick-em between Patrick and Justin Herbert (who has the great misfortune of playing for the Chargers, who can apparently always find a way to lose).

Of course, as a homer (and on body of work to date), I really think Mahomes is better, but there is an argument to be made.

The trade for Russell Wilson:

Broncos get Wilson and a 2022 4th-round draft pick.

Seahawks get Drew Lock, Shelby Harris, Noah Fant, Denver’s first- and second-round picks in each of the next two drafts as well as a 2022 fifth-round pick.

Not looking like a smart move by Denver thus far.

I wouldn’t mind watching a 12-9 game if it featured great defense. This game was just a lot of bad offense.

Are there any coaches on a hotter seat than the 2 we saw yesterday?

Denver fans: “Let’s ride (before the parking lot exits get too crowded).”

Think it’s about time to admit that Wilson was the problem in Seattle, and he’s solved nothing for Denver.

Last night, Denver had the ball, leading 9-6 as the time was winding down. The ball was on the Colts 13 yard line, 3rd and 4. There was 2:27 left in the game and Indy had just called its 3rd and final timeout.

Keeping in mind that the Colts had done nothing offensively up to this point, the obvious call was to run the ball. If the first down is converted, the game is over. If the runner is stopped short, the clock is wound down to the two-minute warning, then a field goal is attempted. A 12-6 lead at that point could be, and should be, enough to win that game.

Instead Wilson throws a horrendous pass that is intercepted in the end zone, and Indy has enough time to drive the field and kick a field goal to tie the game, and they eventually win in OT.

Terrible play call, and a terrible pass.

He had KJ Hamler wide open on a pick route over the middle but had decided pre-snap that he was going to Sutton. It would have been a 1st down for certain and likely a TD. Hamler slammed his helmet after the play. This team is imploding.

After the game, some smartass on Twitter said that they could demonstrate what “Let’s Ride” actually looks like:

(I can’t find the actual tweet now, but that was the gist of it.)

Here’s the thing, he was very good in Seattle at times. Amazing even. But his game has always been built around being a triple threat; being able to toss the ball accurately and far, being able to hand off the ball to a good running back, and being able to run it himself. He hasn’t had the running ability for a few years, and without that, he just can’t do what he used to. It used to be that much of the time, he only needed to account for 10 defenders because one was wasted on spying him in case he took off. That threat is gone.

We have also seen that he needs a tether of sorts. Pete Carroll is very conservative about ball handling. He stressed to take care of the ball and don’t take crazy risks. And for most of his time in Seattle, he was very efficient, and his TD/Int ratio was great. Except for the few times when they let him air it out. Then he failed. A couple years ago there was the “Let Russ Cook” meme, and Seattle gave in and let him do what he wanted. It was a disaster.

Now he’s on a team where it looks like he’s the boss. It’s the Peter Principle being played out on national television. I believe Russ had his ideal situation when he had his legs and had the constraints of a system that forced him to use his strengths and not try to be what he isn’t.

I’ve been a Wilson fan since he was a rookie. I worry now that outside of Seattle, he will fizzle and fail. He’s been presumed to be a future Hall of Fame QB given his accomplishments and records, but if this is the effective end of his career, that might not happen.

I, for one, am shocked that the Bears were not somehow involved.

I suspect you all have seen the memes regarding Wilson’s contrived and rehearsed “Broncos Country, let’s ride” gimmick. I hadn’t ever actually seen him do it in real life…when I saw it last night it was peak cringe. I mean, wow, he makes Tom Brady seem authentic and natural.

Yes. It is painful.

Russell has a lot of talents, but performing like that has never been one of them. Even among his fanbase there are always jokes about him being a robot. Both because of the way he talks and acts, and also because he went for so long without a significant injury (a full decade until last year).

The most human thing about him is how he’d always visit a local children’s hospital in Seattle every week for years. It wasn’t for publicity, it seemed like he genuinely enjoyed it, as if that was how he was able to unwind and get away from the whole football thing for a while.

But he’s not someone you enjoy watching on TV, either in promos or press conferences. Even if you’re a huge fan.

I stayed up to watch that game. I’m owed something by someone.

“It burns the retinas.”

I hadn’t realized how bad this is for Denver until I was reminded of this…

Wilson’s contract runs through 2028 and pays him an average of nearly $50 million per season.

:grimacing:

Anyone know if the Giants game (9:30am in London) will be on a local channel or only the NFL channel?

If Wilson doesn’t turn it around this year and they end up with a top 10 pick next year, they have to draft a quarterback, right?

Wait, oh shit, Denver also traded next year’s 1st (and 2nd!) round picks to get Wilson. Well that’s not great.

All local games are on free over the air TV. Let me check my channel guide.

It’s on ABC here in the New York market, 9:00 a.m. in the cable schedule. (Optimum.)
