NHL: March 2014

Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas are now teammates. I’d LOVE to be in the locker room on day 1 when Luongo reports to the Panthers.

Luongo traded to Panthers

I really wish I owned an auto parts store close to the Panthers arena, I’d love to sell tire pumps today!

That’s epic mismanagement by the Canucks.

Ottawa lost to the Oilers tonight, which probably ends any realistic chance they had at the playoffs this year. I would expect Phillips and Michalek to be traded now.

Or, they could extend Phillips for two more years and pick up Hemsky as a rental. :smack:

Hemsky was at least cheap, but I am not looking forward to watching Phillips decline further while getting top 4 ice time…

Wings pick up Legwand for a top prospect, Eaves, and a second round draft pick. Poor value, everything else equal…but

With Datsyuk, Zetterberg,Helm, and Weiss having each missed much of the year, and all 4 currently out leaving a Center depth chart of

Joakim Anderson
Gustav Nyquist
Cory Emmerton
Riley Sheahan
(Raise your hands if any non Red Wings fan had ever heard of them before 2 months ago)

They needed a center badly, and there weren’t any bargains out there. So I can see it, but giving up Jarnkrok, and ending up not making the playoffs would sting.

I play a lot of fantasy hockey and not a Wings fan, I’m familiar with Gustav Nyquist but the rest of those guys, hmm.

Tim Thomas sent to Dallas in exchange for Dan Ellis. I guess Thomas will back up Lehtonen, but not sure how that’s going to work out.

I found this mildly interesting:

Crosby-Ovechkin

That didn’t last long.

Tim Thomas to the Stars doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I guess the Stars are really pushing for a playoff run after a many year drought. They’ve ridden Lehtonen hard every year since he took over from Turco and AHL prospect Jack Campbell has been hurt and hasn’t exactly set the world on fire.

Thomas will give the Stars the ability to have a decent backup and both of them can be a bit injury prone. I’d be pretty sure Thomas will be just a rental.

If the Stars think they can make the playoffs this year, I think they are delusional.

Yeah, they’re really reaching for …themselves

Speaking of the Stars, their match with the Blue Jackets been postponed after Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench and had to be taken to the hospital. He was recently diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, and had received treatment for it. Yikes!

(IIRC, they didn’t even postpone the game after Clint Malarchuk had his throat slashed open)

So fucking scary. I hope Peverley is okay.

Yeah, as someone who is generally Rich Peverley’s age, and as a big fan of him from his time with the B’s, that is… really fucking scary. Not really a better way to say it.

I do have an in with the Stars and he hasn’t returned my call yet.

I spoke with my source and he didn’t know anything yet. However we did make some speculations…given that the Stars left the ice with the Blue Jackets tells me that Peverley was in the area and being attended to.

The fact that the game was postponed is also very odd. There are often injuries, some serious (Moore, Marchment)that did not cause the games to be postponed.

Our wild leap of logic that assumes facts not in evidence is that Peverleys’ heart stopped on the bench or in the room he was taken to. He was resuscitated in the room and then transported to the hospital. The unique nature of the event resulted in the postponement.

The story and the tweets/re-tweets at CBC sports seems to back up my speculation.

Ah, so it was the players’ decision. Makes sense. (Like I said, if they were able to continue the game after the Malarchuk incident, something’s gotta be really bad to completely cancel)

So, HNIC is turfing Ron MacLean as host for George Strombomoboploupolus. I have to wonder about that. MacLean is a smart, passionate voice of the game.

Teams continue playing after injuries. A few years ago the goalie for the Thrashers collapsed on the ice and they completed the game. Doesn’t seem right to cancel a game like this.

George Stombo(etc.) is a fine television host but MacLean’s shoes will be nigh impossible to fill, and the reality is MacLean knows about fifty times as much about hockey as Strombo does. MacLean is maybe the greatest sportscaster I’ve ever seen in that he’s not only a wonderful host but intensely knowledgeable about the sport; Strombolopolous can’t match him in either category.

To be honest I find the Strombo hiring a bit stupid. He’s not a bad guy but it really sounds like “Screw you, CBC! Ha! We got your show and now we got your talk show host! Neener neener!” He could prove me wrong, but he’s a weird choice and an example of Rogers adopting the CBC’s awful habit of recycling the same old faces over and over.
