Night Court reboot (potential spoilers once the series is launched)

I wonder if they could get Carrie Preston with her personality from The Good Wife.

I turned it off once I heard the laugh track.

I realized I don’t think I’ve seen a comedy with a laugh track in a long while, and it really now seems cheesy and fake.

I agree. Thus far, it’s been basically about fleshing out Gurgs (the bailiff), Neil, and Olivia (the assistant DA), as well as explaining how they dragged Dan back. They haven’t really addressed Abby yet, but I have no doubt they will.

I actually thought it was clever; most shows tend to try and set the stage right out of the gate, and would have gone into who she was, what happened to her dad, why she’s a judge, and so on, without really going into the rest of the stuff.

I suspect it’ll be more of the Dan/Abby show. I don’t really see them casting Melissa Rauch more or less hot off of “Big Bang Theory”, and then center the show around Larroquette, who’s basically done bit parts over the past decade or so.

But I can see the show being something of a two-person show- sort of the Dan & Abby show, in that Larroquette is the only real solid link to the old show, Rauch is something of the “star”, and everyone else is in distinctly supporting roles.

You know, it wasn’t until I followed the TV Tropes link upthread and clicked on Harry Anderson’s entry that I realized that his middle name was Laverne.

I watched the original series only occasionally because I fond the humor too broad. Watching the reboot, I laughed out loud several times. I will tune in to the series.

Seeing the the producer is the judge’s husband explains a lot.
No comedic talent evident yet. I tried to think of a suitable sub and came up with Allison Janney. (she is older than I realized and might not fit the story line)
The whole show episode 3, was like a 2nd walkthrough rehearsal where no one heard the lines the others were saying.

Allison Janney could play Harry Stone’s widow. The comedic possibilities in that are endless, but it also means she’d be old enough to be a love interest for Dan Fielding, and I really don’t want to travel that road.

He and Rauch are co-producers, and co-created it for her. Somewhat insulting to imply otherwise.

Faith Ford is playing that role.

We watched the first two episodes back to back, and caught the 2nd half of episode 3 tonight. It’s above average, but it’s not really running on all cylinders yet. I’ll give it a bit more time.

The A story was good tonight, but the B story with the Bailiff and DA was terrible.

Paula Kelley (the first woman to show pubic hair in Playboy) was the original PD. Foley replaced her.

Dolph Sweet (from Gimme a Break) died on 8 May 1985. It was a bad year for sitcom actors.

Florence Halop (who replaced Selma Diamond on Night Court and was “Mrs Hufnagel” on St Elsewhere) passed away on 15 July 1986.

We turned it off half-way through episode 3. Too bad… was looking forward to it but it was beyond awful.

Finally watched the first two episodes. Not the best start I’ve ever seen. I can’t say I really laughed at any character other than Dan. If they plan on giving him a redo so him and the judge are the good guys, helping the downtrodden, I’m not really interested. I like Dan as a sleazy DA.

Also, please tell me the stenographer was just a fill in for the first two shows. I’ve already had enough of her.

You did better than I did. I lasted 5 minutes.

They were trying to do some character development with Abby which was rough and awkward. I’ll still watch for a few more episodes.

Most do. Some have a studio audience and also a sweetened laugh track.

I haven’t watched any of the new series yet. But it would seem strange to me to watch something with the vibe of “Night Court” without a laugh track or similar. And I’m someone who generally dislikes laugh tracks strongly.

I actually enjoyed that one a lot. The DA’s being flabbergasted that she wasn’t getting away with everything she did before was pretty amusing to me.

I’m enjoying the show so far. I feel like it’s finding it’s feet, and at least a few really good laughs per episode. The blurring of the cupcakes at the end was great.

Dan still had all the best lines, which made it worth watching. But I don’t think being an extremely cynical PD is going to work. Unless, of course, it really does turn out to be temporary (because they have the current prosecutor leave) and he becomes the new prosecutor.
