Okay, I'll start it: The Night Court Appreciation Thread

The marathon is on TV Land right now. I’d forgotten how funny this show is. It’s so over the top ridiculous, but they knew it was over the top ridiculous, so they could have fun with it.

Grossly underrated as far as 80’s TV goes. It was always overshadowed by Cheers & Cosby.

The first season was a bit bumpy, but once they found their groove, it was hilarious. It’s out on DVD now, but it doesn’t have the unaired pilot (featuring Shelley Hack). I just transferred my old copies onto DVD (and then they release it, of course), but I would have bought the first season set if it included the pilot.

My favorite episodes were the ones with the hapless Wheelers. One of the rare times the whole family laughed their butts off over the same stuff. I always thought they could have had their own show.

Of course, Larroquette’s sexist comedy routine probably wouldn’t go over real well these days, but he did win 4(?) Emmy’s for the role.

The Wheelers…wasn’t the husband played by Brent Spiner?

Yep. The best part of the Wheeler’s visits was the way they’d tell Harry why they were in court. The story would start out okay, but get more and more bizarre.

I think Spiner would have done more, but he got the Star Trek gig.

I liked Season One’s Karen Austin. She was puuuuuurty.

Watching the marathon, I’m wondering what jokes I didn’t get as a kid that I get now. Probably most relating to Dan Fielding.

Dan Fielding: “The defendant was seen wielding a shotgun…”

Def: “It was just a little one!”

DF: "The term is sawed off!!! "

Fielding (after humiliating himself in front of everybody): “What’s the matter? You’ve never seen a wimp before?”

Do you think the show “jumped the shark” after Christine got pregnant? I remember losing interest in the show after that point.

Didn’t he withdraw himself from consideration after that?
Really strong cast on that show.

Yes, but I’m feeling MUCH better.

Ohhh-kay.

I thought about starting a similar thread last night, when I first discovered the marathon! I loved Night Court, and it’s been fun watching it on and off today.

Actually, you’re feeling MUCH better now. The episodes with John Astin are among my favorites!

Bull: :smack:

Well, that’s what the little pop ups say, so I would assume so.

It was a great show for many years, but that last season was stiff, stiff, STIFF!

It wasn’t supposed to exist. It was a last minute decision and the writers had to scramble to fix the continuity from the end of the 8th season.

I used to watch it when I was a kid. I’m totally regressing this weekend, curled up in my apartment watching it. There were definately a lot of those jokes that went way over my head when I first watched it at like 7 or 8.

I love Night Court.

The actor who played Mac, Charles P. Robinson, also played the villain in a 1975 Blaxploitation film, The Black Gestapo. That made it a particularly interesting watch.
