Nikki Haley announces US presidential run for 2024 (Not Trump please)

Yeah, I wonder how deluded she is about that. Pence-level deluded? Perhaps not possible. Maybe she is angling for a VP run or something, though she does not seem to be kissing Trump’s ass enough for that (if anything she is going in the opposite direction). I don’t think anyone can win the GOP nomination in 2024 with a straight-up “let’s move on” message.

Do you think they’ve actually hammered this out together, or is it more of an unspoken understanding?

I don’t think he will be either. Yet it’s hard to find anyone else who seems viable at this point. My gut says DeSantis won’t get it either.

Yeah, it all seems like late Roman Republic political machinations. It’s all about the power, nothing more to them.

I think more the latter. She’s digging at him too much for there to be an express agreement. But I believe he thinks she has no real chance, and knows that the more the field is split, the better it is for him.

I agree with this, also. The biggest open secret in politics right now is how flat-footed DeSantis is when unscripted. Plus, he’s easy to ridicule. Those white boots, or whatever that look was! Egad.

Pompeo is hanging out in the wings, but yikes, he’s terrifying. As you said, it’s all about the power. He’s another Younkin – will wear whatever sheep’s clothing is required to get elected/be picked for a position. Once attained, the slavering wolf comes out. Crooked and corrupt down to his toes.

Indeed. He’s a Martin Bormann-style schemer. Smart as a whip but no discernible telos other than power.

And he can’t seem to find a suit that fits!

The joke will be on the people who think he’s the new Trump (and who want that) when he opens his dumm mouff on the national stage. He just seems like an idiot.

I agree. And since neither has really attacked the other, I wonder if they have some sort of informal and secret agreement that she’ll be the VP if he wins the nomination.

She could be thinking longer-term. By 2028 the MAGA movement may have completely sputtered out – assuming Dems retain the White House in '24 – and if Republicans are ready for a normal-ish candidate who conveniently checks a couple of demographic boxes, she’s already had one campaign to establish her brand.

Blatant move to be Trump’s VP. No chance at all for the GOP nomination (unless they need a compromise candidate, which is Pence’s slot) but an acceptable VP for Trump and several other candidates–DeSantis among them.

For a crowd that mocks identity politics, she checks off several boxes–woman, non-white (but still plenty racist), young–and her only task here is not to piss off any other Republican who might pick her as his VP.

There is very little evidence that sounding like an idiot is a problem for most R voters. As long as he’s spouting enough hate and lib-pwning, they’ll lap him up. That gets DeSantis nominated.

It remains the case, and has probably gotten worse since 2020, that for the Ds to win the EC they need to greatly outperform the Rs in national popular vote and do so in a particular list of states where that’s especially hard to do.

DeSantis can totally play the Religious card, the Racist card, and the low-tax high personal freedom Libertarian card. Between those things he’ll get all the R turnout he needs to defeat the Ds in the general. Or at least he’s got a darn good shot at it.

This is seen as an oblique attack on Trump. (And Biden of course.)

Others say that she’s still embracing the MAGA movement in her own way.

But there’s an implication that they did have an agreement, since she talked with Trump prior to announcing her candidacy, and isn’t disclosing what they talked about. Not completely.

Trump is giving lukewarm encouragement to her candidacy, which does support the idea of a deal between them.

At some point in the recent past I was interested enough to look more closely. The deeper I looked, the less I liked.

I firmly believe misogyny was enough to tip things against Hillary, and the anti-Obama racism was blatant. Will be interesting if the Republicans have grown past such concerns. I doubt it.

I can tell you that my wife, a diehard Trump supporter, referred to Haley as “A JOKE” in a FB post soon after Haley’s announcement of intent to run. I assume that it’s the perceived disloyalty that’s causing offence.

Altho I do not care for her, she seems sane, as opposed to trump.

I do not think trump will get the nomination.

I wonder if Haley’s taking down the government sponsored confederate flags in her state will hurt her support from the comfortably racist contingency of her voting pool.

They’re probably hoping that as President she’ll put in an executive order to put the traitor flags up everywhere. Taking them down in SC was just a ploy. But now she’s seen the light. The Right Light.

Yes, as sane as a person who supports and allies with Trump can be said to be, yes.

Maybe you can say that she is an opportunist who benefits from Trump rather than fully buying into the cult. Like a Pence type perhaps.

Still doesn’t make me a fan at all.

The fact that you’re asking the far left here who the Republican nominee will be is enough to think you should assume the opposite of whatever conclusion they come to. I for one think she has a great shot at it. Moderate-ish, female, experienced, and most importantly, from South Carolina.

Moderate-ish in what way?
(And as a group here, we’re far left? Not just merely left?)
And when was the last time Republicans nominated a woman?

LOL, I was going to ask the same thing. A couple of people here are what I’d consider to be far left, but not too many. But we all see things through our own lens, I suppose.

She’s definitely trying to pretend that she is, as one of her supporters is pushing that line.

Though I suppose it’s hard to say what she is, aside from a political tumbleweed.

From the perspective of someone who needs to stand on a stool to see us over the Nazi salutes, sure.
