No Rage-quit, But Goodbye Everyone

Soon I shall change my password to a random string of characters, and delete the email account it links to, rendering it unrecoverable.

The reason for this is simple. When I look at my 3,700-odd posts, I can’t honestly say it was a good investment in time. Far from a waste, to be sure, but not a good investment - there are are more important things I should be doing. I do intend to check the forum from-time-to-time as a non member. There are a significant number of posters here who bring real value to the board, the signal-to-noise ratio is generally higher than the internet-at-large. Although the board could, I think, be better.

GQ often often masquerades as the “I reckon” forum: there are quite a number of posters who don’t seem to recognise the difference between expertise and opinion. The sub-forum might be better suited to the Stack Exchange format, where answers can be edited by other posters, and chit-chat can be put in comments rather than posts, de-cluttering the actual answers. Despite problems, GQ is of genuine worth - the time and effort that posters put in to answer difficult, interesting questions is very much appreciated.

I wonder if Great Debates should be subtitled dick-waving. Again, genuine value there, but probably too many posters who think winning the debate is more important than dialogue.

Finally, the BBQ pit… It has its place, but just because you can behave like a cunt there doesn’t mean you should. And a 31 page thread about refusing to move seat in an un-crowded cinema? Epic fail.

Of course, I’ve been guilty of all of the above to a greater or lesser degree in my time here; my posting history bears witness to my sins. Looking back, I see some good posts, some tripe, a lot of quips, and the occasional minor spat with another poster. Probably a small fraction of my posts elicited genuine interest, but I believe some did.

Anyway, adiós, and best wishes to all(-ish) of you.

Seems counterproductive to me, in case you change your mind. If I get tired of a board I just stop logging on to it.

Yeah, but then you lose some of the “Goodbye…FOREVER!!” goodness.

Farewell, Alka Seltzer. It’s always a shame when the board loses a good poster.

I can still see you… :stuck_out_tongue:

You were always a bubbly character…

Plop, plot, fizz, fizz. Sucka.

Oh, yeah. That is a square hit. Also the ‘let me answer a question I’m pretending you asked rather than the one you asked’ forum.

Nevertheless, I can’t quit the dope. And GQ is better than, for instance, Ask.com and similar places.

I’m sure it will be a relief for you.

I can’t believe he quit the whole thing.

Like WHAT?

Don’t worry, I’m still here.

Well don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

I don’t understand why one has to go through all this sturm and drang and flouncing as if the SDMB was some sort of opiate. (Oh, wait…). Just stop posting. Pretty much nobody will notice your absence. Or, care.

It’s sort of like that scene from the end of Terminator 2 when he is being lowered into the vat of molten metal: “Good-bye! Good-bye! Good-zzt”. More dramatic that way.

Ahh.
Hence the “no rage-quit! Rilly! No, srsly! I don’t care what any of you think of me! Rilly! I have more impurtant stuf to do! You people are beneath me because the SDMB is worthless and I am better than you so gud bye!” OP.

Got it. Don’t let the good Lord split ya…etc.

Fare thee well.

Damnit. The OP should whip out one of those virtual AR15s and take out a bunch of other random posters in a blaze of glory.

Also the title should be something more like “Goodbye cruel forum” or some such.

OP. You are a good guy. Just lighten up on the SDMB juice. No need to go cold turkey for EVAR.

If not, then best of luck.

I’m old enough to get that one.

May you go on to great things Alka Seltzer. When you’re making that acceptance speech (for the Nobel or the Pulitzer or whatever), be sure to add a 3) Hi Opal! or an og smash. We’ll know who it’s for.

Alka Seltzer is clearly worried that his willpower will be inadequate to overcome his habits. I can understand that. If you want to stop eating cheesecake, then you change your route home from work so you don’t pass by the Cheesecake Factory.

I think a more effective strategy would be to block access to the site entirely. There are plenty of apps that do it. Surely far more of your time is spent reading threads, particularly 31 page threads, than is spent in composing replies. No need for password change and the possibility of posting in future, if desired.
