I was bored and going through old posts that I missed when I was off-board for a year or so to see how they had resolved themselves and came across an interesting phenomenon: People “quit the board”.
But they don’t seem to actually “quit the board”. The average seems to be about a two week lapse in posting. I also noticed a gneder gap in board “quittings”. It seems like females (or those who say they are female) quit the most (actually I didn’t see ANY males quit) while males seem to get banned the most. (Remember PEACE? Sometimes I miss him, honestly.).
So my question is who holds the record for stating “I"m going to quit this damn board!” the most times and is that person still a user? As a secondary, when these people came back, did anyone give them crap about it? This is why I no longer announce if I plan on leaving anything, because I will invariably return and be the butt of many jokes.
There’s probably plenty of people who’ve said to themselves, “That’s it, I can’t take it any more! I quit!” and then out of curiosity come back. I know, 'cuz I was one. Took me a whole year, though.
Then there are people who post, “That’s it! I’m not posting to this thread again!” And then they do, because they just can’t stay away.
But there are a few who had huge flameouts in threads and never did return…
Me, I don’t quit the board. But what with its popularity and the effects of that on the servers, usually the board usually ends up quitting me. Especially during the day.
What’s the record? I’ll throw “I quit” in my sig. Soon, I’ll have quit after every post. I’ll have the record in no time and we can put this issue to bed.
I do think it is kind of funny when people type up a gigantic post to explain why they can’t take it anymore, how the board is affecting their real lives in negative ways, how their mother didn’t love em, how the dog died, and the car got totaled all cause of the SDMB. They don’t hate everybody just certain folks, and it’s because they are being singled out and teamed up on, and it makes them depressed. If only people would have behaved differently maybe they would stick around, but they are fed up and the rest of us need to realize this is just a message board. Then within a month they are back. Sometimes without mention, and sometimes with an equally long post explaining how they have overcome all of the feelings from the “I quit” post, or maybe how they have come back cause they figure they can help cure us of our horrible ways if they stick around.
Makes em look foolish in my eyes. Or at least emotionally unstable. If you are gonna quit, do it with a one line post (or no post at all) and make it permanent. It’ll look much cooler then the soap opera-like storming out scene followed up by the equally soap opera-ish return. No one ever dies for good in those damn shows. Ask Roman from Days of Our Lives. Don’t be that guy. Or girl as it were.
Not quite correct. I quit participating in the BBQ Pit forum, but I still participate in the other forums. This is the first time I have posted in the Pit since I quit, and only to “fight ignorance”. (No offence intended or taken). I will now return to quitting the Pit.
Well, I quit once after a nasty couple of months wherein I was taken to the pit at least six times, I quit, had my posting privileges taken away, and that was quickly followed by the Winter of Discontent, so I was able to regroup and come back in the manner that people wanted (namely, with less frequencey ).
The only reason I presented the board with a quit post was because I literally had recieved at least 40 emails asking my why I was quitting and I’m lazy, and I didn’t feel like writing the same thing forty some odd times.
So, while Dalovindj may think I was doing it to be soap operaish, I was doing it just so I could be done with it and move on.
Whoa. Defensive much, anyone? To be fair, I have seen people say something like “I’m taking a break from the boards for a while.” in a calm and non-dramatic manner without attacking anyone. This is different froma long drawn out “I quit” post. I didn’t mention any names in that last post. It’s up to the individual posters to decide if their breaks from the board were done in a mature manner or screamed of daytime television. I was thinking of no one in particular with my last post, that is why I spoke generally. Relax. Stop stamping your feet. Take your fingers out of your ears. Up the dosage. Every thing will be all right. . . .
