Not that I’ve got anything against the yanks you understand (well not much)
it’s just that the things that interest them have very little interest to
me. They are interested in those strange pass-times that they have over
there (netball, rounders etc) and the antics of apparently famous people
who I’ve never heard of (although I take it as read that they will have
“American Hair”).
So who among us non Americans is renewing or not?
For myself, I probably will, but not if becomes a totally American affair.
After all I will be paying in mighty British Sterling pounds and you get a
lot of yankee dollars for one of them.
A quick look on the current first page of various forums (these are rough counts, as I’m not opening every thread!)
GQ: 40 non-geographic threads, 6 US-specific ones (one identified as such), one non-US thread.
GD: Roughly half US-centred, with one self-identified Canadian thread and plenty of international ones.
Cafe: mostly international or non-geographic. (Plus one Soccerball thread )
IMHO, MPSIMS & Pit: few American-centred thread.
I actually find this place to be a lot less American-centred than many others. Mind you, I really really hate the assumption that ‘the government’ or ‘income tax’ etc. in a thread title (and even worse, in the entire thread) automatically means the USA. I’m often tempted to wade into such threads with links to Inland Revenue, the MoD etc., and then go “What? You mean America?!”
Note for admin: is there any way of getting a geographic statistical breakdown of membership based on the details from current payments?
I won’t be, for a couple of reasons; firstly I don’t post much, so it’s not worth it, secondly the boards have taken a new direction which I’m not comfortable with and thirdly it’s just not convenient to renew, as I don’t have a credit card and would feel bad about asking someone to pay my renewal the second time around.
I´ll try, at least; if the credit card works this time, what´s the point of an international CC if it doesn´t work 90% of the time to pay stuff overseas?
First, when you say American, do you mean citizen of the United States of America, or do you mean anybody who lives in the Americas?
Second, I’m Canadian, and I plan to renew. Being a member of these Boards has been an absolutely fascinating look into the minds and hearts of the Citizens of the U.S.; probably more so for me as a Canadian than for people who are farther away (geographically and spiritually) because Canadians and U.S.ians have so many common points of reference, and yet are still very distinct people.
No other reason than because I spend too much time here. Neglecting to pay may help kick what sometimes occupies too much of my time when there’s more important real-life things I should be giving my attention.
But then I would miss this place. Maybe I just have to learn moderation.
I’m staying. But then, I’m a strange case – Location-wise, I’m not even in an English-speaking country. I was, however, born in the US and Baseball actually interests me. Go Red-Sox!! Ahem
So there!
But I’m not renewing yet… simply because I just have to see the nag-screen / reminder/ whatnot that I’ll get – at least once. Yes, I know I’m weird. But I already said so.
