I just read a spoiler about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The only reason I watch the show is going to die. Yes, Spike. I knew another main character was going to die, but not him. He’s the best thing on the show. Oh, well. If it’s true, then I’m not so upset about not getting UPN.
a short list of some other characters from the show who have died:
buffy
angel (twice, not counting turning into a vampire)
darla
willow (alternate universe)
xander? (alternate universe)
cordelia (alternate universe)
In short, I like Spike, dammit. Let’s hope his death isn’t permanent. (and with the necromancer guy around, it might well not be).
Whaaaaat?! Oh my God! And now because I couldn’t help myself and hopped on in to check out this thread, I’ll have to live in pained silence because my husband is yelling that he doesn’t want to know whatever it is. My obnoxious gasp of horror piqued his interest…
I am MOST displeased. He’s my favorite character.
I see your point, TheNerd, and agree. But unfortunately, it’s the necromancer guy who kills him. That’s what I read anyway. If you guys want the site, I’ll look it up again and post it.
Settle, people, settle.
If this is rumour is true (and quite frankly it makes sense - redemption is a key theme in Buffyworld, and the only way Spike could possibly redeem himself is to die saving Buffy/the world. Further, what else they gonna do with Spike? He and Buffy are not going to get sweaty, and the unrequited love thing can’t go on much longer as a plot device), declaring this a reason to abandon the show is more than a bit premature.
Joss Whedon has done a pretty good job of avoiding the “A-Team syndrome” - he recognizes that, in a show centered around violence, main characters have to die. And he’s done a good job of replacing main characters. Fer chrissakes, the show has thrived since it lost Angel (as well as, my personal favorite character, Oz).
If Spike goes, Whedon will develop a character that, while not replacing him (he is irreplaceable), will keep the show in balance.
