Nor Cal Meets So Cal?

Doobieous & I were talking about a possible date in chat, and here are a few weekends that we can meet:

June 16 & 17
June 23 & 24
June 30 & July 1

We know that the last weekend may interfere with possible 4th of July plans, but we still want to leave it up to a vote.

We’re doing this well in advance, so there’s plenty of time to think about it, argue about it, etc.

Just to get in an early non-vote. June 30th is definitely out for me. That whole weekend in fact.

Why aren’t you guys suggesting dates deeper into July?

pat

Well, all this stuff is fine for me. This far ahead I can afford to make plans around the Dopefest, as I don’t have anything even tentatively planned for the summer. I’ll go anywhere, pretty much. Well, not LA. But that’s the point, right?

pricciar: "Just to get in an early non-vote. June 30th is definitely out for me. That whole weekend in fact. Why aren’t you guys suggesting dates deeper into July?"

July??? Good gawd, Pat – you are like an incredible far-ahead planner!!!

… on the other hand, if we have it in July we can decorate for the holidays (“Christmas in July” and all)…

We can suggest dates in July. I just threw these up just to start getting an idea of when we want to do this shindig. Heck, if we can get a higher number of people coming in on a July weekend, then I’m all for it.

Me? I’m pretty open for any weekend, as I haven’t made plans yet, but I am still for making San Luis Obispo as Ground Zero. Any farther up north, like Monterey, starts to put it out of range for us Angelenos. SLO is already about a 5-5.5 hour trip from my starting point (counting normal driving speeds, stops for gas, etc.).

I am open to just about any date within June or July. I’ll probably have a job by then, but planning ahead allows me to point out this was planned well in advance, and gives me opportunity to think of a good lie :).

Anyway, we have plenty of time to think about this also.

Count me in - I’m moving to San Diego between Christmas and New Year’s, so I should be well-settled in by June/July and ready to take a trip up north.

Somebody ought to check to see if there are any major happenings in SLO for the target weekend(s)…Cal Poly should be out of session, but it sure would make lodging tough if there was a convention in town at the same time.

Just trying to find more people who are interested in this doperfest happening. Only a few SoCal dopers have mentioned anything here, and we need more people interested in going and having a voice on where we are finally meeting and when.

Better start talking or I’m going to resort to emailing all you people!

I was kidding about Fresno, but just outside of Fresno is a bitchin’ lake called Millerton. Nature, great skiing, great camping.

Just a thought.

Ok people, Me, Pat,and Java decided to revive this thread, in case there were people who didnt see it when i first started it. Let’s keep it fresh in our minds. We want this to happen. I know some havent seen it, like Ruffian, si it’s for the benefit of them.

I’m in, just tell me where and when. Thus far I haven’t set the dates for my summer trips yet. I’ll also put a vote in for SLO. There’s all kinds of nifty stuff, non-beachy types could head up to San Simeon for an afternoon at Hearst Castle and there’s an excellent roadside BBQ in Cambria. If the Madonna Inn is open I’d love to share one of those mondo suites with some folks (Harvard Square anyone?)

It’s too early for me to officially say I’m in or not. But sure sounds like fun! And maybe I can get Nymysys out here to join me for the road trip…

Hrmmmm…let’s see how pretty you talk to me, Morphy. I didn’t even read the thread, but you and road trip sounds like a lovely combo.

Anytime from mid June would most likely be fine for me. Even if I have a car by then, I don’t think I’ll be particularly keen on driving that far, so I might need a ride.

And if my parents ask me where I’m going, I could always say I’m checking out UC Santa Cruz…

Count me in Doob. SLO is a little far to the south, but upon checking the map there is nothing any farther north until Monterey. I’d love to have this at Big Sur, but we would have to be reserving campsites now and there are few inexpensive accomodations in that area.

We definitely want to check on possible conventions, graduations or other events in SLO before committing on a date. When you consider the normal rowdy factor in that town, we would all have to be on our very worst behavior to even make a dent in things.

I’m up for San Simeon (Hearst Castle) as I have never been there and am a huge fan of Julia Morgan. However, allow me to be the first to suggest a Sunday morning road trip to Solvang for brunch. Some of the restaurants there have a very decent smørgasbord (high praise from this Danish food snob).

Get this ladies! A town where every other shop sells fine chocolate. What’s that you say? Ah, Solvang it is! It is only one hour (60 miles) south from SLO and would have the LA dopers on their way back home, so there has to be some appeal right there. There are also some wineries in the area for a post brunch activity.

Anyway, just my 2¢ on this whole affair. Great idea Doobieous! We just had our SF Bay Area Holiday Dopefest last night. I wish I had seen this thread before hand so that I could have brought it up at the party. Oh well!

Count me in!

Fair warning, y’all. If you guys are going to watch to do San Simeon, we need to pick a date soon. Summer tickets for the Hearst Castle go FAST in the summer, so preordering would be best, IMO. (And if anyone would wanna go, I’d tag along…been over 7 years since I went.)

Of course, I’d also just like to be able to make plane reservations, too.

Did someone say camping? Yeehaw! I’d be down with a SD Campout. As long as there are showers…

Well, I’ll do it if I have a car by then – and that’s a big if, there. But (whine) please, no camping(/whine). I’m too asthmatic to be able to be at all in favor of Nature.

Is the Madonna Inn really closed? It may be open seasonally. I hope it’s survived; it’s a fascinating place. It’s too over-the-top even to be fairly called tacky; it’s a law unto itself. I’ve only been there once, but the ladies’ rooms are indeed indescribable.

I’ll reiterate again: Pat and I chose SLO because it’s practically between the two major areas of population in California, the Bay Area and the Los Angeles area. We didnt choose Monterey or anything further north than SLO because A. Too far north to be fair to the LA area dopers. B. I fear what people would say when they see me with you people  (Kidding!). Camping is nice, but i’m not sure everyone wants to do that.

There are some nice small coastal towns up the coast a bit. Cambria is nice, pretty tourist trap, pines and all. A family friend lives there (Catholic priest). Nice restaurant called Lynn’s (Basically homestyle food). PLus they sell pies and preserves (Sour cherry and Kiwi, among others). I’ve heard Solvang is nice also. There’s a Chumash reservation with gambling…but i’m not sure y’all want to do that ;).

Anyway, we should figure out dates so people can figure out when to take leave, etc.
