Norah Jones kicks ass.

“Raven-Haired Chesty Long-Legged New Chanteuse from Brooklyn”

Ah well, I was nearly right.

Put me down in the over-rated column. The album is pleasant enough and she’s got nice, smoky voice but I don’t think the material is very strong and the production is bland.

And, to echo Ike from the previous thread, it most definitely is not jazz. Pop-folk/country/blues, maybe, but not jazz. She actually reminds me of a young Carly Simon, or Edie Brickell.

I thought of her more as a young Carole King. And yeah, the whole album is that good.

I like her album, but not as much as my wife does. I hate to admit it, but I was rooting for the Dixie Chicks. I generally hate country, but really enjoyed their new album. That said, I have no complaints that Norah won. Did Avril “Hated Braindead Fraud” Lavigne get shut out?

hrh

Yes, Avril did get shut out. She got beat by Ms. Jones in “Song of the Year”, “Best New Artist”, “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance”, “Best Pop Vocal Album” and by Ms. Crow for “Best Female Rock Vocal Performance”.

Thank god! I’m not usually one to revel in others’ misfortunes, but I hate her. But that’s another thread, isn’t it?

hrh

Norah is wonderful, and I’m pleased for her. By the by, can someone explain to me how ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year’ can be three different awards? What does ‘record’ mean in this context if it doesn’t refer to either the album or one of the songs on it?

IIRC, Record of the Year goes to the Single, Song of the Year goes to the Songwriter, and of course Album of the Year goes to the Album.

To clarify, Song of the Year goes to the Songwriter for one specific song.

And I like Norah Jones. Didn’t watch the Grammies, though.

how does she stack up lyrically to, say, Fiona Apple?

Record of the Year can actually go to an album or a single. Song of the Year does go to the songwriter(s), and Album of the Year goes to the artist and producer maybe(?) Of course, there’s also Producer of the Year awarded as well. It is pretty confusing.

Why does it matter whether it’s jazz or not? It’s all music.

Well, it doesn’t matter, really. My comments were more relevant to the linked thread than to this one, I suppose. It’s just that it irks me that the album was promoted as vocal jazz and released on Blue Note, a supposedly jazz label, when there’s nothing jazzy about it.

Of course, that has nothing to do with its merits as a pop/folk/country/blues album. And yet, even on these terms, the album fails to live up to the hype. This is primarily due to Jones’ limited emotional range, lethargic delivery and the CD’s bland, undifferentiated production values. Not that I think her album is bad, mind you, just way over-rated.

Having said that, I’ll still take her over Avril Lavigne any day.

More than one song, actually.

That’s what you get for mispronouncing David Bowie’s name, I guess.

While I generally despise the Grammies, I think they sort of got it right for once.

Not to take away from her abilities as a musician, she looked so adorable with all those Grammies in her hands- like she was overwhelmed by it all.

God, don’t they ask “do you want a bag with that?” when they award those suckers?

As for Norah Jones, I’ve only heard about 30 seconds of her music, so I can’t really comment on that, but wow, is she hot. So is her half-sister Anoushka. I’ve loved Ravi Shankar for years, so it feels sort of weird fantasizing about shagging both of his daughters…

I am in the undecided category as to the quality of her works. I have listened to her album a couple of time, and it is pleasant, but nothing more than that (yet) for me.

I wouldn’t say I have a crush on her, but I admire her music.

Norah Jones does indeed kick ass. I don’t care what type of music you consider it to be - she is a breath of fresh air. I’ve been listening to her since the summer though only recently bought the CD. I adore it, except for Song 4 - I skip it. I love the songs Turn Me On and Come Away With Me.

Tiburon is right, it’s a “someone special” kind of CD.

I’m pleased to see that the Grammy’s did her justice.
