That song is one of the great masterpieces of songwriting that only come along every few years. It will be a standard tune for years without anyone else coming close to perfection with it. Ravi Shankar’s daughter has great genes.
Did the Grammys stack the deck this year in the invitees? For the first time in many years the performances made it appear that the recording industry has given up on its penchant for noise and replaced it with music. I don’t know how representative of all the nominated songs this was (and Latin and Classical and hip hop and polka and a bunch more were simply ignored) but they generally choose well.
I had also read somewhere that Jon Stewart was the host, I was very surprised to see Hoffman come out first. Anybody know the story there?
I really hope this isn’t the kiss of death for her. She’s been pigeonholed by some into the “earnest post-Britney female singer” category, but she’s geniunely talented, and without even a hint of diva-ness. I also was amazed by how down-to-earth she sounded in her acceptance speeches.
Yeah, she definitely didn’t seem at all jaded. She really did seem in awe of standing on the same stage as Aretha Franklin and Bonnie Raitt, which is such a human-like thing.
In the US, I think Ravi Shankar is going to be remembered as Norah’s dad, not Norah as his daughter. Norah Jones has American fans. Ravi Shankar has sidestream George Harrison fans.
My understanding was that Hoffman introduced Simon and Garfunkel because he featured in The Graduate in which one of their songs was prominently played (Mrs. Robinson). They were fantastic, too. I called my mom and she turned on the TV and gasped. Very cool.
I’m sure she’s OK if you like that sort of stuff. In the hands of a lesser talent, “Don’t Know Why” or whatever that song is called, would be just plain elevator music. She’s talented enough to keep it out of that category.
But I still don’t understand all the fuss over her. My money’s on her being this year’s Charlotte Church.
She’s very cute. And she’s got such a beautiful voice. Did she say “Oh shit!” when she got her second grammy? When asked what she was going to do tonight at the backstage interview, she said “Paaartay!”
