Jeez, you guys all get really punchy by the end of the week.
Not me–I just worked a 14 hour shift and I am tired and grouchy. Stoopid job-hate it.
I missed all the seafood puns, a realy calamari (calamity).
I had something to say…
oh, yeah-spacialriftus --where on Cape Cod? My parents have a house in Falmouth. Love it there–great book store and lots of shops and beaches and antique-y type stuff. Oh, and GREAT seafood at the Landfall in Woods Hole. Just a suggestion.
The tree guys left me a small mountain of mulch with which I must become one tomorrow. My flower beds need mulch! I plan on getting some Preen and then mulching the hell outta my beds. Great times, I tells ya.
I won’t dump ALL of Thursday’s stress and unpleasantness on you at once, but I have to tell you about skiffman’s latest attempt to kill me.
I had come to the decision that I am very tired of him being gone all the time, and that no matter how much money he makes in the Bering Sea it just isn’t worth his life. Wednesday night he called me from the boat and agreed that he would like to stay home this winter as well. Yay, right?
So I had made plans with a friend to take #3 school shopping on Thursday. I generally turn my phone ringer off at night, partially because I have in-laws who drink and random dial my number in the middle of the night, and also because my phone number is one digit off from that of one of the hotels downtown. I also have a tendancy to “forget” to turn it back on in the morning. I have voicemail, and I was checking it in the early morning. One of the messages was obviously not from a land line, and the background noise sounded like a helicopter. It wasn’t a good connection, and all I could hear is "Mrs. (my last name) cut out husband cut out into town cut out call you when cut out. I freaked, because it would be so Movie of the Week for him to agree to be home and then have something terrible happen to him right afterward. I then called the hospital to see if there was a medavac, and after a few minutes of checking they said they didn’t know of any at the moment. So I called the skipper’s wife, and she told me that she was going to call the boat and would call me right back. I was really scared.
So she calls me back, and my husband, who thinks he is soooooooo funny, was fine. He had gotten a deer that morning, and was calling to tell me that he was going to either send it in on the tender or maybe they would be coming to this end of the island and he would bring it home. The thing is, he ALWAYS says “Hey hun” when he calls, but he also finds it very humorous to use different voices and play tricks when he calls other people, and he was being goofy. Oh freaking hahaha. Not. So he called me back later, laughing, and apologized for scaring me, but he seems to have gotten his jollies from it too. I think it just underlined that I really do still love his ass. Jerk.
Anyway, he called again to apologize for freaking me out, but he was laughing as he did. Also to tell me they were indeed on their way in, and to expect him in the wee hours of the morning. He walked in the door at a little after 8:00, as they had to deliver their fish first, and he was only home until 8:55 as the skipper wanted to take off and be in place when F&G opened Kitoi at noon.
My heart can’t take that kind of crap, and I have 75 new grey hairs, damn his ass.
Punchy, BiblioCat? MMPers? Never!
That sounds scary kai. Remember to whap him one upside the head from us next time he’s home.
I’m in the hotel in East Lansing following a very fun - and wild, of course - Dopefest. There were 6 of us who ate and laughed, then 5 of us walked over to a used bookstore, then to Barnes and Noble, then we sat down in the cafe there and talked some more. Discussion ranged from silly to intense math/science-y stuff. So, even if my reunion is boring I had a lovely Friday evening.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who rushed straight to the Pit to see what LiLi had said. Very creative, I’ve got to say. And thank you for speaking on my behalf…
Meeks, I think you should be fine with an e-mail thank you.
Well, it’s past my bedtime and I’m falling asleep. But I was so glad to see there was free wireless in this exceedingly expensive room (I think they price hotels like flights; the smaller the town, the more expensive the hotel); everything in the Guest Services book leads you to believe that you have to pay for anything but dial-up. I was starting to twitch due to lack of internet and decided to fire up the laptop anyway. Lo & behold: hotel wireless network. Yay! (Really, I’ve had my share of internet deprivation for the year.)
Looks like I won’t be at this hotel tomorrow night, but there’s a Panera near the one I’ll be at, so I’ll probably be by a couple more times on the weekend.

Hi everybody! It’s been one hellacious week, I tell ya! Between work and company, it’s just been crazy, crazy, crazy.
I feel like I haven’t had time to breathe, let alone anything else.
The visit with my daughter’s friend is going well. We drive him back to his hotel every night, and the hubby picks him up on his way home from work. He is very polite and helpful. He helped Mr. Taters out with one of our computers.
Tomorrow we’re all going out on the boat. My sister and BIL are also coming out with their boat. My other sister and my Dad are driving out to meet us at the lake. Additionally, my niece is coming along. After all the boating activity, we’re coming back here to BBQ, visit, and play some 99. I’ve already made the hamburger patties, and shortly I’ll head out to the kitchen to make some ME salad, AKA **N.O.T. ** salad.
kai, it sounds like you need to whap your husband upside the head with an iron skillet. I did that to my husband once. Fortunately for him, it was only a glancing blow. It was early in our marriage. I’ve mellowed out considerably since then. Now, I just don’t talk if I’m angry. I also refuse to cook. That gets him where he lives.
I suppose I ought to make the salad now. Although, I’m not quite sure how I’ll fit into my fridge. It’s rather full right now.
We don’t have a permanent place on the Cape. This year we’re renting a house in Wellfleet, I think. Last year was Orleans. I’ll mention Falmouth to the parental units. Thanks!
Oh, and Snakes on a Plane? Actually a legitimately good movie in its own right. The 'net jokes on top of it made it so much better.
kai, smack him. Tell him it’s from all of us.
Morning. I’m working 9-4 and Mr. Lissar is working 7-3. We are both to be pitied, but he is to be pirtied more, because it means he only gets one day off this week.
I’m sorry that Mr. Lissar only gets one day off this week. I’m working 6-5 myself, unless something breaks, then it’ll be 6-when its fixed.
-Belz
I was hoping for a report on Visiting Guy, Taters. Glad it’s gone well so far. How long is he staying?
Glad to hear Snakes on a Plane didn’t disappoint. I just went out to IMDB and was surprised to see it rated 8.4. I read a few of the comments and they’re all enthusiastic.
Behold GT, übergeek. My work laptop is plugged in so that I can re-charge the battery (I idiotically ran it down at home yesterday). I’m also sitting here with the iBook, listening on line to my home NPR station because I like their early Saturday a.m. programming better than the local station’s. (Can’t miss Only A Game if I’m awake.
Plus, I’ve been out to look for free wireless hotspots nearby. And I’ve renewed my license tags (got a reminder in my e-mail and was afraid that if I ignored it, I’d forget and they’d wind up expired and I’d have to go somewhere IN PERSON). Gotta say the BMV has an amazingly straightforward renewal process. Really nicely organized, uncluttered, very quick. (Longest part of the process was digging out the credit card and entering the info.) Still need to check for a closer hotel than the one I’ve got a reservation at, since it doesn’t sound like it’s going to work out with where I am. I’m going to go scope out the current state of a couple of places I rejected because I don’t know if they’ve been renovated since I was last here.
And, for the sake of whoever couldn’t remember their license plate the other day, I know mine by heart. (That was here, right?)
Well, I guess I should go hop through the shower and then venture out in search of breakfast.
And…since I’ve now previewed…so sorry about all the weekend work hours, especially Mr. Lissar’s. Well, actually, Belz, your hours sound pretty obnoxious.
How’s Mr. Lissar’s new job working out, LiLi? I remember you posted something about his boss fussing because he’d been sick. Did that all get smoothed out?
GT
His boss shut up when he mentioned the doctor’s note, and everyone there could hear him hacking up lungs, anyway. As of earlier this week he’s past his three months, too, so now they need a good reason if they want to fire him. We just got the benefits package, too! Yay!
Yuck, Belz. That’s working six a.m. to 5 p.m., right?
Just before waking up I was having one of those terribly unproductive dreams where you’re late for work and can’t find any decent clothes. It was a relief to wake up.
Yeah, my schedule does seem rough at times. 6am to 5pm (actually 4:30pm, but it often takes 30 minutes to get wrapped up and out of the building) is a long shift, but it does have its good side. I have almost no traffic on my drive in, and with a 60 mile one way commute, that is a good thing. The big plus comes with the work week. I only work 4 days a week, Wed - Sat. This gives me a 3 day weekend each week with the added bonus of not having to work on Mondays. I mean, really, who wants to get up and go to work on a Monday morning?
Oh well, if all goes well today I’ll be able to swing by the Atlanta DopeFest at Cowtippers this evening and meet some of my fellow dopers. Swampy origionally said he would be there, but I haven’t seen an update from in a while. Even if he doesn’t make it, being able to put some faces with the names of fellow dopers is always a good thing.
-Belz
My daughter’s field hockey team party to say “Welcome!” is today, so I spent from 0730-now making cookies. If I had to make cookies this early often, I would probably grow to hate cookies.
And that would be a tragedy.
Not much to say. We got 2+inches of rain last noc, so that blows my moving of mulch today. I am too tired anyway to do it, so I’ll run errands instead. (errands on a Saturday-am I nuts?). These are my last days of freedom until Dec 8. I must use them wisely, Luke.
Off to Home Despot. Have a great weekend, folks!
60-mile commute…yuck. I commuted not quite that far for about 6 months when I was a young 'un and it about drove me nuts. My brother, at points in his life, had a nearly 3-hour commute (each way). Not sure how he survived that. At least he was on a train most of that time, but still…
I’ve showered, dressed and exited the hotel only to discover: RAIN! And me with no umbrella, of course. So I’m at a coffe shop that I could drive to and am about to return to the hotel in the hopes that the nearby CVS has an umbrella so that I can walk around town.
Since it’s icky rainy, I’m thinking I’ll take a little bit of a drive around then go find somewhere quiet to do the work stuff I need to finish up before Monday.

Hello I am posting on the emergency backup 'puter. The new one is dying piece by piece, and is seriously frellled. I work this weekend, so I can’t even get it looked at till Monday.
Howdy all!
Well, my weekend is nearly over and I am NOT in the mood to go back to work tomorrow, mainly 'cause I came home from my relaxing trip to the beauty salon (manicure and pedicure - Diviiiine!) to find a voicemail from my obnoxious boss, giving my a bucketload of work to do tomorrow. Why in hell couldn’t she just wait till tomorrow to tell me! COW!
Anyhoo, I refuse to let that ruin the few remaining hours of my weekend. I am lurking in a number of threads while simultaneously watching reruns of Dr Phil and laughing at people less fortunate than me (cruel and kinda sick, I know, but Schadenfreude is a natural thing).
Wow, Belz, 60 miles is a long way to commute! I live about 500 metres from my office, so my morning commute takes about 10 minutes from leaving my apartment to walking into my office! Handy when you work crappy long hours, and it also means I can come home for lunch if I really need to get out of the office!
Oh weel, time to think of dinner - maybe I’ll cook up some chicken parmagiana and rocket salad. Enjoy your weekend!
what is “rocket salad”? is it made with lots of hot peppers and things?
kai - skiffman needs to buy you a NICE piece of jewelry for that scare
So the realtor came and went and left me a form to fill out so the listing can be posted on the MLS website - but my friend has again changed his mind and thinks he may be interested in it. Given the choice, I’d rather have a tenant whose ‘habits’ I know and am comfortable with. Besides, with a friend downstairs, there’s someone I trust to watch the house when I go away on vacation or for surgery
I can relate to the short weekend thing, dg. Even though I’m sort of taking a 4-day weekend (wound up working from home much of Friday morning and will eventually get to some more work - I’ve been trying since about 1:30. It’s now 3:43 and I’m actually getting close), I know that Tuesday will get here in no time flat.
rosie, I’m pretty sure rocket salad is arugula, which is pretty peppery, so you had the right idea. Hope friend makes up his mind and decides to rent from you. It does feel nice to have someone close by that you can call on in a pinch.
I’m now installed at hotel #2, which I actually prefer to last night’s except for its location. Cheaper. Complimentary breakfast. Complimentary wireless internet. Clean and not terribly tacky.
As to the reason I still haven’t done any work: unplanned automotive adventures. Everything’s fine now. Details [del]at 11[/del] on Monday.
Almost forgot: can someone tell my why hotel room A/C is always set to frozen?
Off to get stuff out of the car and then on to some work. Really. Honest. What could stop me?
GT
Evening. I’ve just started The Places In Between, by Rory Stewart. In 2002 he decided to walk across Afghanistan. In winter. In war. It got a fantastic review, and so far I’m really enjoying it, although the thought of walking through a war zone in winter gives me palpitations.
I was supposed to go to church, but i don’t feel terrific.
Mmm, arugula.
Arugula? Ain’t that somewheres near Jamaica?
I’m full. I had a big ol’ roast beef, ham, turkey, provolone cheese, lettuce and mater sammich and some N.O.T. chips cause I was hungry. Now I’m waaay full and sleepy. I gotta get me some energy up cause I got collards cookin’ and mac & cheese to make. I like my M & C to sit overnight in the fridge. Then I take it out and let it get to room temp and put great big glops of shreded cheese on the top, which I let melt in the oven. See, my version is actually cooked on the stove top and finished off in the oven to let the extra cheese get all melty. It’s gooood. I’ve put together the meatloaf and it’s mellowing in the fridge too. Meatloaf is another one of those things that needs to sit overnight, IMHO. I’m sleepy!
We pool lounged and adult beveraged for a while this afternoon. Just the two of us. That was nice just floatin’ around and relaxin’.
Ok, back to gettin’ stuff done. People are comin’ over tomorrow expecting to eat, so guess I better make sure there’s food available.
Later Y’all!
