Northern Exposure - An Arctic MMP

Plus mirrored disco balls. A definite must have.

I have a conference call at four o’clock this afternoon. I am so excited. Least it ain’t about mop handles or mopheads.

Hey kai, speaking of blowholes, whenever you come back in would you mind just giving a quick mention of what the volcano’s up to now? It was Augustine, right? It was tough enough getting anything about it even when it was fussy and updates now are near nonexistant. sigh No Kodiac moments. :frowning:

Made right here in our great Commonwealth.

Dotty, IIRC, you’re pregnant, so we’ll save that until your alien parasite has emerged. We don’t want anybody calling the ASPCA on us.

Bibliocat, how about you just send me one or two when you’re sated?

Meeks, We are the best things to come out of the 70’s, aren’t we? Well, us, and Star Wars.

Okey-doke. I’ll send her a couple. Anyone else, while I’m at it?
Hot, sweaty firemen, up for grabs?

What a wonderful OP! :::applauds:::

Cricket’s picture didn’t make it to the top 20, so I’m all depressed and stuff. This week’s contest is “Back to School” and since I don’t have kids I don’t have school stuff to use. Maybe next week. I’m trying to be optimistic. Blah.

Tonight I have to go to the Executive Board Meeting for the Cottonmouths Booster Club. We’ll talk about fundraising, and buying new foam pucks for the Chuck-a-Puck, and what players are coming back, etc. Basically just an excuse to go out to dinner and talk about how much we wish hockey season would hurry up and get here.

I want a sweaty fireman, a foam puck and a 12" mirrored disco ball.

EC whoda thunk! Kaintucky, the land of Bourbon and Disco Balls.

Well, if firemen are all you’ve got, send a couple my way, too.

When I was a teenager, all of my uncles were firefighters in Leesburg, FL. Every time we would go to visit, we would stop by the fire station because at least one of my uncles would be on duty. If nothing had happened recently (so the guys weren’t busy) a lot of them would be working out. Nothing like seeing a bunch of hot, sweaty young men to seriously mess with a young woman’s hormone levels.

Do you know the difference between a hormone and a vitamin? You can’t hear a vitamin.

My earlier post was cut a bit short because Cricket came in and knocked a half-full mocha latte off the desk, splattering it everywhere. I had to get towels, and bleach cleaner, and the mop…and threaten to make a bath mat out of a certain spoiled tail-deficent black cat with an attitude. I guess she’s hacked off that her picture didn’t get chosen.

Hope everyone has a better week than mine is starting out to be. But if I get grumpy I can always go read that wonderful OP again! Thanks, kai!

kai, that was fabulous! You need to sign up for a few more MMP OPs! If I’da knowed you were going to post so early, I’da been the first reply, seein’s as how I woke up at 2:30 in the stupid morning and couldn’t fall back to sleep. About the time you were posting, I was watching stupid reruns of stupid Just Shoot Me in the family room so I wouldn’t wake my sweetie. And to think I could have had whale tales to ruminate upon while I sat in my boring training class (with 2 more boring days to go…)

Alleged? Alleged?? <insert stern look here> Since you’re new, I’ll cut you some slack, but believe me, chocolate love offerings are not alleged. Period. You are forgiven. Now go and allege no more. And send chocolate.

Like I said, I had training today. And when operating on less than 5 hours of sleep, staying awake in a dimmed room while an instructor reads off his Power Point slides is nigh on to impossible. But I survived. And now I’m home, with the house all closed up and the AC on. Our nice cool weather has left and it’s summer again. alas.

That’s all I’ve got for now, except to ask, where the heck has Rue been? Somebody in Ohio go poke him with a pointy stick, please. Sheesh.

Isn’t the Jax zoo fabulous?!?!? We were members for many of the years that we lived there. I watched it grow from a crappy little zoo to the wonderful place it was becoming when we moved. Even after she became a big ol’ teenager, my daughter loved going to the zoo with me. <sigh> I really miss that place.

I got told I’m almost too good to be true. See, ACBG (poor thing) is having to work late cause their patient load is up. I guess that’s a good problem to have cause they’re also fully staffed right now. So, anyhow, even though he’s the administrator, he’s going out to see patients at home. Well, he called me to tell me he was out near the swampcave and wondered if he could sneak by and make a sammich after he saw his next patient cause he was hungry. As if he had to ask! Anyways, I have some really nummy maters, so, I fried some bacon and made some french fries right quick. Ok, so they were frozen fries, but still it involved cooking, so it counts. So, he comes by and I’ve got toasted bread, bacon, lettuce, maters and fries. He had two BLTs and some fries. He was a happy ACBG, thus the gettin’ told I’m almost too good to be true. What can I say! I am a f-aaaaaa-bu-lous boyfriend.

Don’t worry. He won’t get too spoiled. He’s still well trained to do my bidding, as it should be.

aw, swampy, ain’t you a sweetie…

… even if you’ve never sent me chocolates…
:stuck_out_tongue:

I think I want a gay boyfriend…

Off to weed–it’s a bit silly and the weeds laugh at me, but I like it. Beautiful day here -so glad the heat hasn’t come back (yet).
We are having a scandal and outrage re our fire dept here at present. Sadly, the tool most involved lives quite near me. And he is indeed a tool. Out goes he and that should solve the problem. I hope he moves–that sounds nasty, but he’s not best of neighbors on the street, either. Then again, there goes our street being plowed first each heavy snow. Dayum-these modern trade-offs.

I felt the same way, so I went out and found me one.

that, or a wife . . .

Oh yay! You like me!

I was pleased to see you Shirley, you were one of the first members on the board to make nice with me, how’ve ya been?

Hi dgd, this is always a fun thread, all week long. Actually it’s more like The Neverending Thread, which is a very good way to get to know some very nice posters.

BiblioCat I debated over the name, it’s not the easy part of the MMP OP! I loved Northern Exposure, not just because so much of it rang true with life in Small Town Alaska, but because it was shot just a pace down the road from where my family used to go camping, and the scenery reminded me of home. Here’s some sympathy for the braces, my #3 daughter currently is wearing them, and The Son will get them this Fall. #3 daught only has a year to go, and she has pain every month when they tighten them up. Now she is wearing elastics to pull her overbite in, and she eats a lot of soft food and liquids. On further perusal I see that you are joining the firemen? Good on you! And 18 year old boys are such fun!

puggy you are sweet and funny. (I loved Wayne’s World back in the day!) I hope that you were talkin’ nice about me!

Nope bobbio, that would be “A congregation that relies on pie-annies and geetahrs I won’t do more than visit more than once, on an aesthetic level”. hehehe, I had teenagers who spoke in Yodaish all the time!

rigs and Morgyn, commercial whale viewing boats are restricted to how close they can get to the whales. Since we were just out running around in the skiff we had no such restrictions, other than really not wanting to get dumped into the sea!

And Sean my dear, whale breath is truly vile smelling. I mean, gag a maggot vile smelling!

I grew up hearing stories about Alaska, taxi, so many members of my family lived and worked up here, so it was a given that, at some point, I would wander north. If you ever get the chance, take the trip, it is beyond description beautiful.

Be careful what you wish for lieu, I gots lots of stories!!! Seriously, thank you all for your kind words, I have a large-ish insecurity streak when it comes to my writing/story telling, and I worried all week over the OP. I had it finished Saturday, and last night spent quite a bit of time dithering over it before I finally sucked it up and hit submit. That you all liked it is very gratifying, and I would love to share more stories in the future. As for the volcano Mt. Augustine it doesn’t look as if much has happened since April. If you would like to see more about all the volcanoes around here, as well as their status and other information, visit the Alaska Volcano Observatory site: http://www.avo.alaska.edu/

I remember back in '74 when I spent a year living with my Aunt and Uncle who were very devout Roman Catholics, and one Sunday there were guitars during Mass. I loved it, but my Uncle ranted for the rest of the day about it being improper. Having checked out a number of denominations I have experienced a lot of different praise/worship music. I like a lot, although some hymns were not meant to be sung first thing in the morning, without a good vocal warm up! This chorus,

Oh Lord, You’re beautiful
You face is all I seek
And when Your eyes are on this child
Your peace abides in me

is a favorite of mine, along with most of the rest of Keith Green’s body of work. He was part of the Jesus Freak movement of the late '60’s, and I identify strongly with his story as well as his music. One of my favorite, and most meaningful, quotes of his is that “Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to McDonald’s makes you a hamburger.” jmo. And perhaps rigs nailed it when she said that

waving Hi Cat Jones! I’ve been around, although with the kids home during summer I find that I have less time to post. Thanks for your kind words, and how are you? Things here are back to cold and rainy, I had to get up and get two additional blankets during the night, boo.

rigs I’ll gladly comment! Teenagers are so damn frustrating! Don’t feel badly for having cried and expressed yourself, that is sometimes the only time they listen to their mothers. I have two grown and flown, and two still in the nest. #3 daughter is such a blessing, other than some PMS’y moodiness, she is otherwise a delight. It wasn’t so with the two older girls, and if The Son, now 13 AND A HALF (his words) makes it to adulthood it will be a miracle. He does the grunt and mutter thing, every time I speak to him I get a loud “HUH???”, he is extreme in everything, and would prefer to live in his room, in the semi-dark, playing video games. He is aggressive and combative, but when called on it, he says he’s “just joking around, geez!” sigh I completely agree with your thoughts, and do my best to instill the basics of how difficult Life is. #2 daughter is finally getting a grip, but she has spent a year struggling on her own, and getting mad at me for not throwing money at her to ease her way. “Being a mom is not an easy job” is such an understatement.

Ooooooooh, high praise from fcm!!! With all the nice comments, I may just offer to post the MMP more often. The reason I posted so early is because so many of you are in such early time zones, and if I posted it in my morning, you all would either be halfway through your day, or already done with most of your day! So I waited until midnight, posted, and went to bed!

This post is ridiculously long, but I feel so happy that you all enjoyed my story! If I missed anyone, I apologize, I am just sitting up here doing a happy dance. I’ll close this now, but I do have a short story to make bobbio feel a little better, too.

A couple of my work friends and I used to joke about needing a wife. I still think it would be a good idea. Well, if I had the money, a personal assistant and a housekeeper would come in really handy.

I’m in Ohio. I’ve even met Rue, and everything. I think Ellen and I could probably meet in the middle (approximately Rue’s neighborhood) and jointly drag him into the MMP. Sounds like a plan to me.

Oh, also, I think that when we finally have our MMP Fest, it should take the form of a trip to Alaska.

I think you handled that just fine, rigs. Tears only show how much you care about your son, which kids that age really need to know (or so I’ve been told; like swampy IANAP).

Seemed awfully quiet on the weekend, Spats. I blame you. :stuck_out_tongue: Sounds like you had a nice family weekend, even if you had to neglect us.

I’d like a couple of those spare 18-year olds too, Biblio. Of course, I want them to help me out in the the garden. (Did that sound sincere?)

Still working on getting over the allergies and such. Need to clean up cuz little brother is stopping by tomorrow night. Good thing it’s just him, cuz it’s not looking real presentable around here at the moment.

Guess I’ll go put something away before crawling into bed…

GT

You bastard! <jealous, jealous, jealous>
I don’t know if I want a wife. I used to say that if I weren’t hetero, I would have married a woman (oh, wait-that’s illegal now…oops), but now I’m not so sure.

I think I want a love slave who does windows, instead.

wiki --thanks for the kind words. They don’t give much trouble, but today I realized just how much I was worrying about him. He has been given an option: if he comes up with another form of exercise (it must be structured and include a group), he may quit soccer (this was done by husband, unbeknownst to me–but I’m ok with it. The point is to get him out a bit and active). He is researching karate lessons.

It’s too bad, though–he is demon defender in soccer. He is almost 6 ft and can be fast (when he tries).

Daughter made varsity field hockey–but not the position she wanted. ah, well.

sorry, gt --didn’t see you there. Thanks. I just felt a bit bad because it seemed like suddenly we were on another level–if that makes sense. We’re ok.
