A somewhat off-the-wall query, but I thought it was worth a shot. I’ve been sent a batch of jazz guitar discs for review from Norway. A few of them definitely lose a little in the (cultural) translation, so I thought I’d see if anyone could help out here.
–One of these discs, a very fine guitar trio disc called Pop! by Staffan William-Olsson, contains renditions of mostly very improbable pop material (Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ la Vida Loca”?!) along with the odd jazz standard like “Body & Soul”. A few of these are unknown to me, & websearches turn up no English-language pages, so I’m left to guess from the pictures & whatnot I find. So: exactly what are “Jag Tycker Inte Om Dig” & “Vaere Trist-Sangen/Karius Og Baktus”? My impression from web-browsing is that the 1st is a pop tune from the 1960s sung by Lill Lindfors, & that the latter is probably a themesong to a children’s show or movie. Couldn’t seem to find links to sound samples though.
–The press release for a disc of loud organ/guitar/drums jazz-rock by Pål Thowsen says it’s his “comeback” disc. Er…comeback from what? I know nothing of the man’s career.
–Same goes for Jon Eberson, a very good guitarist here whom I gather had some kind of pop career but on the 3 discs I was sent tackles jazz standards (on Jazz for Men–horrible title!), free jazz (on Mind the Gap), & Mahavishnu/Lifetime-style fusion (on that Thowsen disc).
Thanks in advance for any help.
