For the life of me, I could not understand what people saw in Everybody Loves Raymond. They would sit and laugh their asses off and I would sit and wonder what they saw that was funny. I thought the show sucked pondwater.
What shows have you disliked that were immensely popular?
I like Raymond (the MIL portrayed is my MIL on a good day and a killer dose of Xanax), but can see where it would grate on people’s nerves. The kids bugged me on that show.
I, too, LOATHE Lucy–ALL of her shows.
I also hated Charlie’s Angels , Fantasy Island , Love Boat , The Nanny (couldn’t even listen to her voice–ugh and yuck and blech)…there are probably a hundred more, but I gave up on prime time TV a few years back (when the “reality” shows hit). I saw the Raymond episodes on a flight to UK.
Raymond is one of the worst shows on TV. Why people find humor in the way the poor wife gets treated by the in-laws, worse yet her own husband, is beyond me. In real life the show would be called, Raymond Pays Child Support and Alimony.
I like it well enough when it is just Raymond and his wife - their interaction can be pretty funny. But, as soon as the parents walk in, I can’t flip the channel fast enough. They annoy me even more than the Costanzas.
“Will and Grace” and “Sex and the City.” They are (or were, in SATC’s case) extremely popular and I can’t stand either. I just don’t get what everyone thinks is so great.
For the record, I don’t mind “Raymond,” but I definitely don’t love him.
I HATE Raymond. I cannot stand that show. I also hate cop dramas. My husband and I chose to get rid of our cable last year because we were watching too much TV. That’s no longer a problem anymore, especially on Wednesday nights when every single broadcast channel other than PBS and the WB (which we rarely watch - too many teen dramas, but that’s another rant) has a cop drama. Oooh, I also detest Fear Factor. None of the things they do are scary - they’re all just gross. It should be called Ew Factor.
I hate Raymond too. He’s an idiot, his wife is a shrill, shrewish bitch, and it’s not funny. King of Queens is only better because the wife is incredibly hot, but otherwise, it’s the same annoying setup.
I also have no patience for The Brady Bunch, The Honeymooners, Full House, The Cosby Show, Fear Factor, Married With Children, King Of the Hill, Real World, and come to think of it, any reality show I’ve ever seen except Amazing Race.
Oooh, forgot about Sex In the City. I watched it twice to see what the hype was about, but all I saw were the four more unsympathetic female characters I’ve ever seen on a TV show. Shallow, catty, hateful bitches, all. And I hate Friends too, so there. I don’t laugh because they’re just like people I know in real life, as many said about them. They’re creepy bastards, and I’m glad I don’t know anyone like them.
I agree, watching ELR is like observing a group of severely retarded adults living in a group home. The jokes are corny, the dialogue is stupid, and the in-laws are morons.
I guess people must like it…it seems to be popular.
The funny thing is, this show is a reversion to the family shows of the 1950’s-although not half as clever. Face it, raymond’s dad is an idiot!
It’s the same kind of humor for people who think Jay Leno is a comic genius, but get a little uncomfortable when Letterman is on and wouldn’t dream of watching Conan or The Daily Show. 'Nuff said.
**Seinfeld ** – Characters just plain stupid and annoying, and even the best jokes are funnier when described later than when actually performed. Jason Alexander is the black hole of talent – he’s not only sucks, but he sucks everything he touches into crap.
Everybody Loves Raymond – Raymond is such a total idiot you want to kick him in the teeth. I can’t watch more than two minutes before having to leave the room.
According to Jim – As stupid as Raymond, and selfish and sexist to boot. Why the hell his wife doesn’t take a knife to his throat as he sleeps is beyond me.
Will and Grace – Just plain unfunny.
I Love Lucy – better than these, but Lucy’s overacting and “wacky” ideas grow tiresome very quickly.
Network reality shows. Those on some of the cable/PBS stations can be mildly interesting, but the rest are just plain stupid and boring.
I never understood what was supposed to be funny in Home Improvement.
I must have tried that show at least 3 or 4 times during the course of its run and never even cracked a smile, let alone laugh.
I personally like ELR, although it is certainly not the best comedy show ever. I think Frasier was maybe the best in the last decade (when the original writing team was on board). Curb Your Enthusiasm is good (any word when it is returning?)
The following will not make me popular here on this board, but I don’t find Arrested Development all that funny, and The Office (both British and American versions) is truly wretched.
I dunno. My sister-in-law loves ELR and she’s fairly counter-culture-ish (lliberal, bisexual, tattoos, etc.). The difference seems to be that she grew up in a family that behaved much like the family on ELR: lots of shouting and put-downs (which she says is just how Italian-American families act). My family is really WASPy and I don’t think it’s funny at all…
I can’t fathom what people see in ELR (or The House Of Screeching Douchebags, as it’s know around the Briston household). Every single character on the show is the type of person you would actively avoid spending any time with in real life. Why watch that? Ho ho, look! Conniving, moronic husband got caught trying to put one over on bitchy, screeching harpy while obnoxious in-laws meddle in their affairs! Hilarity!
Hmmm…I just realized something…my two most hated shows in history are Everybody Loves Raymond and I Love Lucy. Maybe I’m just turned off by shows try to overly pump up their star’s likeability…
