Married…with Children
Roseanne
The Simpsons
Seinfeld
King of the Hill
Any “look how trashy and stupid we are” kind of sitcom.
Actually I got rid of my cable a couple of years ago because I couldn’t afford it, and I found I didn’t miss it, except for The West Wing, The Weather Channel, The History Channel, and Turner Classic Movies. And I can get WW and old movies on DVD and the weather on my homepage, so no biggie.
Ed: I hated this so much that I can’t even stand the actor when he shows up on other programs.
ELR: Everybody Loathes Raymond
Joey: Jesus christ, can’t anybody in network TV come up with something funny and original?
Married With Children: Fear and loathing on network television.
That stupid show with that woman who was a doctor in Rhode Island and kept seeing her dead mother…or something. Note to network: locating a show in a small state isn’t the least bit interesting, homey, or amusing. Try again.
Will And Grace: GAY! (audience hysterical laughter)…GAY! (audience hysterical laughter). BOR-ing.
Vegas: Somebody please re-bury James Caan, mm-kay?
Fear Factor, et al: The demise of civilization as we know it.
ELR - Liked it for the first 2-3 seasons. Characters were charmingly goofy and there were some funny situations that reminded of some of my friends and family. Then somewhere it turned very shrill…the characters were always yelling, even when they weren’t arguing. Can’t stand it now. (my husband is thankful cuz he always hated it)
Frasier - Roughly the same. Never was a big fan of Frasier Crane when he was on Cheers, however the characters of Niles, the Dad, Daphne and Roz were entertaining enough to keep me going…for about 2-3 seasons. Then it turned into the Niles and Daphne soap opera and Frasier sleeping with a variety of women and will he ever find his true love? BORING
**West Wing **- Liked it for about 3 seasons. Surprisingly enough, when Rob Lowe (of all people!) left the show it became unwatchable. Not sure why. But I have not even had the desire to turn it on and I was all over it the first couple seasons.
CSI - I bought it for the first season. But come on, how many ways can we watch them dust for fingerprints in slow motion? And I will NEVER IMO, they should not have gone the “Law and Order” route and eliminated the character development. Now it’s all cookie cutter characters and they just try to gross us out with the story lines. Meh.
Friends - Was really into the show for a couple seasons…but then they all started sleeping with each other. Gah!!
Seinfeld - Can’t help it…LOVE IT and always will.
But I absolutely ADORE King of Queens. Doug’s character stays just goofy and silly enough without going over the top. The also do a good job of limiting Jerry Stiller’s scenes so as not to overuse him. I think that’s what some shows forget. They “Kramerize” secondary characters to the point where they are intolerable.
A big THANK YOU to those of you that also hate I Love Lucy. In none of her incarnations did I ever find Lucille Ball remotely amusing. The Honeymooners is also one that always made me uncomfortable.
I also hate I Love Lucy. It’s not funny-Lucy’s a fucking moron. Blah blah blah…and that long screeching whine…RRRIIIIIICKEEEEEE!!! Ugh. I hate Lucille Ball.
Also hate: Seinfeld: Michael Richards is the only cast member I like. (Especially in UHF). I loathe, loathe loathe Jason Alexander. I cannot describe the depth of my hatred for this individual. Friends: a bunch of pretty, stupid, shallow people whining about how they’re pretty, stupid and shallow. Everybody Loves Raymond: The show makes me cringe. I cannot watch it, because I just end up wanting to smack the living shit out of every one on there. The stereotype of the hateful harpy bitch and the stupid, clueless husband are severely overdone. Will and Grace: another show where I’m annoyed by everyone on the show, especially Grace. Judging Amy: I used to like this show, but the daughter is a spoiled brat, just like her enabling mother. The sister-in-law is a neurotic freak. But I LOVE Maxine, Vincent and Kyle.
You have to really pay attention - I don’t catch half of the humor until I rewatch an ep on tape, some times replaying a bit 5 or 6 times until I catch what was said.
Amazing Race - I keep hearing how it’s the best reality show on TV… blah, blah. STILL a reality show and still can’t stand it. The only reality shows I can stand are those that make fun of stupid people (ie, Airline).
Curb your Enthusiasm - And I LIKED Seinfeld! CYE is just mostly dull. A few big laughs, but nothing special. It’s talked about like its comic genius… bah.
Desperate Housewives - I’ve never liked Soap Operas, why would I start now?
You people are confirming all the reasons that make me so apathetic about purchasing a television. (It’s not a principle or a too-cool-for-you thing…I just can’t muster the enthusiasm to lug the damn thing home.)
The last show I watched consistently was…oh, I guess it was The Simpsons. I used to like the original Law & Order but haven’t seen it in years, thanks to the ex-wife throwing a temper tantrum (literally) every time it came on. I watched the first 7 or 8 hours of the first season of 24 but then missed a couple of episodes and never bothered to catch up.
I used to watch Mad About You, just 'cause I had a massive preadolescent-through-adulthood crush on Helen Hunt, but I’d be the first to acknowledge that it generally sucked, 'specially the Company Man from Aliens (Paul Reiser…can’t stand him.) OTOH, Gilligan’s Island, Gidget, and I Dream of Jeannie were the only reason I got out of bed on the summer of 1984 and 1985, for reasons that are obvious to any male with a pulse and functioning eyes.
Shows I’d actually schedule to watch/record/buy or rent DVDs: The Prisoner, The Saint, The Twilight Zone, and Max Headroom.
I tried to watch Everyone Loves Raymond once, but both I and my ex-roommate ended up throwing things at the screen. It was almost as bad as Roseanne. And regarding Friends, pray tell, what the heck is it with the Jennifer Anniston infatuation that everyone else seems to have? I swear, the woman isn’t any prettier than a used couch. When she smiles she looks like she’s going for the neck. I never could stand that show, from the opening credits on.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees that Amy is a brat.
There was this one episode where Maxine was having personal problems and she decides to go out for breakfast or something and Amy and her brothers come downstairs and start whining about how Maxine wasn’t making breakfast for them. I know it’s silly, but that one scene turned me off of the whole series.
CSI is the biggie for me. Crime scene and lab techs do NOT interview suspects or go on arrests! They do NOT work in dramatically lit labs with all the latest, greatest, DNA test in five secods equipment. Argh!
Oddly enough, though, I like Crossing Jordon. Probably because a) there is less of the techs donig detective work (though still enough to get on my nerves a bit,) b) Jerry O’Connel is da MAN and c) Jill Hennessy is smokin’!
I also loath almost all the “classic” sit-coms in the early days of TV. The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy** (and ever other thing she has done,) The Brady Bunch, tec…About the only one I like is The Dick Van Dyke Show, it actualyl had smart writing, whoch seems to have been unheard of back then. It was like the Scubs or Arrersted Developement of it’s day.
Wow, I think I’ll be the first on this thread to say it, but:
I HATE SOUTH PARK!!!
Whew, I feel better now. I just hate it. I don’t think it’s funny, and no, it’s not because I don’t “get” it. It’s absolutely ridiculous in its stupidity. Add to that list, Futurama and The Family Guy. Blah.
I also hate the Blue Collar Comedy show. Foxworthy’s 15 min. should have been up about five years ago.
Raymond is ok sometimes. I don’t watch it often enough to really know. I like the brother and the MIL.
I love Seinfeld, Friends, Sex in the City, Nip/Tuck, and most of those other shows you guys all seem to hate.
I can tolerate small doses of Raymond. Sometimes it’s annoying but sometimes it has some genuine moments of goodness. I don’t think there are enough of those to explain it’s long run though. I’ve only caught it in syndicated reruns. I absolutely love Peter Boyle and the best episode for his character was one where there was a power outage and they were all hanging out together and he danced with all the women and was being very charming. Debra makes some stupid comment about liking him this way and it hurts his feelings (it implied he isn’t usually likeable or interesting) and she tried to make up to him and he confesses that he always felt that it was him and her against the crazy ones (the mother, Raymond and Robert). That show really made me dislike Debra. There were other Peter Boyle moments (sneaking off to play piano and sing in a bar) that made me angry that he’s never won the emmy when the other actors who have won have basically “one-trick” characters.
I also absolutely loathe Lucy.
I may not love Lucy, but I certainly lust Lucy. She was hot.So was Desi. It’s a dirty, dirty shame that the two of them never did a porno. Not one that was publicly released, anyway.
I like the episode where Ray recalled when he was a little boy and he saw Frank, at night, petting their pet rabbit. After denying it the entire episode, Frank finally admitted it and said he only did it because the boys never paid attention to it.
Although I do hate the moments where he’s a total ass to everybody and then, when others call him on it, he tries to make them feel guilty by telling some Korean War story.
How can you possibly think that woman is hot? She looked and sounded like a grandmother even when she was young…and that mouth! Ugh!
(Actually, that was one of the problems I had with I Love Lucy, btw; she was way too old to be playing the silly ditz in the way that she did in that program. Gracie Allen was great at it even at an older age, but Lucille Ball was never convincing, IMO.)
Sorry, Scummy…can I call you Scummy?..I didn’t really mean to rain on your porno-parade, it’s just that I’ve detested that woman as long as I can remember and the idea of her doing a porno just plain gobsmacked me.
