ignore me i’m not looking for a doctor …or a spiritual advisior…me first post …like to see me name in print…slan to all…or hello
We have test threads for this purpose – you could have started one.
You should have put your “hi there!” in another forum entirely.
Please don’t do this in a serious thread where we’re tryiing to straighten out a situation/make a ruling/explain why we did something.

And maybe you should read the forum descriptions over again:
The Straight Dope Front Page/Forums Index
Thank you.

I’ll see your slan, and raise one weapon shop of Isher.
In fairness, a newbie could easily be misled by the rubric under About This Message Board on the front page:
This is also the place for practice posts.
The reference is, of course, to practice with fonts, codes, etc. but it could be taken to apply to a first post, especially to someone unused to message boards who wants to make sure they’ve got this posting thing right before they dive in to the fray.
Greetings to you, finn007. I can see you’re a bit unused to the place – hope to see you around in MPSIMS, mate!
I’m really easy to get along with once people learn to see it my way
hi ICEY…oh yes i’ll be around…BTW whats MPSIMS or am i in it…
I always assumed that “practice posts” meant OPs like this. I learned something new.
Go to this forum, mate. MPSIMS stands for Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share. Kinda the general topics forum. Like “General Discussion”.
And oh yeah, all – that post was directed at finn007. Also – there’s no post editing here, finn. They haven’t turned that function on!
Ach bejaysus finn wotchew doing here?
Don’t alarm the natives too much, or I shall drag you back to G’Dope and have you placed on The Apparatus[sup]TM[/sup].
And yeah, hie thee over to MPSIMS, you madman.
Me too, in fact I contest that is what “practice posts” means, and everyone other than us two and the OP are wrong, wrong, wrong!
This was originally posted in the middle of another thread. Tuba moved it to its own, new thread.
Thanks for the clarification, Smeg. Tuba’s admonishment seemed a tad harsh, but it makes more sense now.
It was originally in the middle of the “Clarification on medical advice” thread, where we were in the midst of explaining a ruling and smooth some ruffled feathers. Not a good time or a good place to do something like that, however well-intentioned.
I didn’t yell at him overmuch. I didn’t characterize his actions as anything but a tad misplaced. I moved his comments to a new thread, explained the situation, and pointed him to where he could get more information. By comparison, Cecil would have had his guts for garters.
People come into a new situation and make mistakes; it’s a natural byproduct of the message board experience. They learn and they grow. I’m pleased to facilitate that experience as much as possible.

Ah, loads clearer now. Thanks, Tuba! I was wondering what was going on.
Please consider that those of us reading this thread only could not tell at first that you had moved his post from somewhere else. Like many others, I thought he was being told not to post that kind of post in this forum.
Surely you can see why your response, under those circumstances, would have seemed a little “unusual.”
A couple of lessons, I think, can be learned:
- Moderators need to remember (especially when splitting off a post) that their comments may be read out of context, and so need to be sure their comments can reasonably stand alone.
- Members need to remember not to jump to conclusions, because they are very often not seeing the whole picture. I think I’d like to repeat that: Members need to remember not to jump to conclusions, because they are very often not seeing the whole picture.
Bippy, it looks like you and I were right all along.
Members would be far less likely to jump to conclusions if they were given the whole picture. And I’d like to repeat that. Members would be far less likely to jump to conclusions if they were given the whole picture.
